Thanks guys. The guitar is miked. I used a 57 and a couple of shitty chinese condensers for room mics. Basically, I love my JCM 800! All the synth parts are run through it as well.

I'd for sure be into helping you out, Lucious.

I just put up a slightly different mix.

Cheers,

That is a freakin sweet demo dude.
Well done!

What gear/software did you use for this recording?

the only thing I noticed was that the cymbals seem to "fall off fast" or don't sustain. but it's JUST too short, so just a touch more?? oh, and more kick.

But hey, that's just me. - Sat, 22 Apr 2006 4:53pm Edited: Sat, 22 Apr 2006 4:58pm

Nice Job. Really.

About the only thing I'd do differently is push the cymbals back a bit and pull the drums forward. More punch less sizzle I guess. You may be able to achieve this with some gentle EQ on the overheads.

Cool song too. - Sun, 23 Apr 2006 3:00pm Edited: Sun, 23 Apr 2006 3:02pm

That is correct, Griphin. And it is pronounced "Michael", like my first name. Pretty clever!....

Thank you for your kind words. The problem with the OHs is pretty much unfixeable at this point since I mixed down the entire kit to one stereo channel before recording. I have in fact rolled off about 9 db of highs already.... bloody cheap condensers!

Next time I'll try putting the OHs lower (they were 6 feet in front of the kit at head level) for more drums and less cymbals.

Cheers! - Sun, 23 Apr 2006 5:13pm Edited: Sun, 23 Apr 2006 9:12pm

If you're not close micing the drums individually, the best way to balance the kit is in the performance. Mic position is very critical too, but never underestimate the simple art of adjusting the performanc to "mix" the kit. I can always tell a drummers level of studio experience by how they hit the drums/cymbals. The inexperienced are almost ALWAYS cymbal bashers and too light/uneven on the drums.

If you can get the drummer to play light on the cymbals and firm/confident on the drums you'll find the tracks much easier to mix. If you need more cymbals, a little compression/EQ will easily bring them out a bit more. As you've already discovered, it's easy to turn cymbals up but WAY harder to turn them down...

Depending on your room, you might want to try putting the overheads just above/behind the drummers head in ORTF or XY position. This captures the top of the kit from the drummers perspective and providing he/she has good dynamic control, you'll get a decent balance. Depending on the song/style, you'll probably need a close mic on the kick and snare though.

Good luck!
