Apparently Ditch wont accept local albums for sale or consignment anymore.... Pretty weak in my books. Guess who keeps Ditch in business? People in local bands!!! Thanks for helping out the scene boys. - Sun, 2 Apr 2006 10:22am Edited: Sun, 2 Apr 2006 10:30am

While I agree that there needs to be decent outlets for local CDs, I can sympathize with their position.

If you've ever worked in a retail situation that does consignments (especially low-ticket items) you'd know that it's not such a simple deal. It's a huge pain in the ass, unprofitable, and an EXTREMELY thankless job.

It was recently discussed in depth in a thread called "Local CD Consignent" it's probably a couple pages back in this forum. Check it out. - Sun, 2 Apr 2006 11:07am Edited: Sun, 2 Apr 2006 11:16am

Fuk it, all the power to them. They have to pay the bills, and if "ditch"ing local bands consignments is what they have to do, then thats what they have to do!

However, I doubt that DITCH would not take local CD's. Maybe the band that tried to get their CD sold wasn't providing a profitable product, if you know what i mean. - Sun, 2 Apr 2006 2:02pm Edited: Sun, 2 Apr 2006 2:04pm

ditch isnt future shop, you are not going to get some dude breathing down your neck while britney spears or ashley simpson is blaring behind you, ditch sells music that it (at least seems) they enjoy. If its their perogative to not sell your cd (or any other local cd, wich i dont think is the case), then that is their decision. There is a million bands in victoria, and if everyone was at ditch you would have a hard time finding anything not from victoria at the store, not saying that would be bad in itself, but that is not what ditch does, they for the most part sell underground indie records you cant get at other stores in the city, they sell records they like and are proud to sell, thats why they dont work down at some corporate mall store that forces cds down their throat... by asking ditch to change its policies is asking them to change their foundation. - Sun, 2 Apr 2006 7:13pm Edited: Sun, 2 Apr 2006 7:18pm

buisness opertunity.... In Europe you will always see independent sellers at gigs. A guy who will have a box full of music. They set up right beside the merch table of the band or on the street outside a show. I know thars far too many loopholes here in this city but if your shrewd it could be done.
But who am i to talk the last place i shopped for records was Richards Records... who needs anymore music when you own Black Flags Damaged! - Sun, 2 Apr 2006 9:08pm Edited: Sun, 2 Apr 2006 9:17pm

I run Ditch Records and we stopped consignments about a year ago. We were getting over twenty a month; indie rock, punk, bluegrass, DJ mixes, lots else. Some sold but most didn't and with the internet shift away from record stores our selling zero copies of most of these didn't seem to help anyone (and it was a lot of work). So basically we take known local bands under the R n' R spectrum or if you are a ditch regular we carry your CD. But for the daily calls we get our official line is that we don't take them. Almost everyone who has worked at the store does/has played in bands, I go to more local shows than all the other store owners combined times ten and I'm not down on the scene. But it's the curve a band takes nowadays; first selling at shows, then local stores, then distributors. I blame the internet. - Sun, 2 Apr 2006 10:56pm Edited: Sun, 2 Apr 2006 11:57pm

lets get a posse together and run the internet out of town! I don't understand how the internet has changed your business plan in regard to local discs. I doubt that you sold more local records before the internet came along. The truth, like our friend at ditch touched on and is probably too polite to fully come out and say is, unless you're an established band nobody cares. Your fans will most likely buy your cd at your show. - Mon, 3 Apr 2006 9:31am Edited: Mon, 3 Apr 2006 9:43am

it makes sense to not accept every single thing handed to them... I have bought a bunch of local stuff from ditch though, I think their current policy is smart - Mon, 3 Apr 2006 10:01am Edited: Mon, 3 Apr 2006 10:03am

I think they should just up their profit levels and stop giving bands such sweet deals. Lyle's only makes $1.95 on each $10 cd (I don't know what Ditch was getting) and this just seems hugely low. Bands should expect distributors to take pretty fat cuts, they gotta make money. And yeah, you're can't expect to be sold if your band licks a mighty chode. (They turned us down... but they hadn't heard us, I swear!).

However, the internet shouldn't have any bearing on local sales. Local cds are the only ones you can't get on the internet. I know I've bought more locally done/independent discs this year than big record company ones simply because they're completely undownloadable (yeah, I'm part of the problem, shoot me).

I guess you can't risk losing money on local crap if your major record label sales are down though, so the internet has had an effect on that. - Mon, 3 Apr 2006 7:19pm Edited: Mon, 3 Apr 2006 7:50pm

Charging more markup is probably a good idea, at least to make the effort worth more. To do so, bands should accept the consignment price may not be as much as selling their wares at a local show. If both could agree then perhaps that would work under some circumstances.

There are also separate book-keeping practices for consignments, as one has to keep track of how much is owed, etc, as compared with buying stock outright.

I think ditch marked up our CD by $1.50 or so, which as you mentioned I thought was pretty low when I first saw it. But they are having to weigh how much they can increase the price and still sell it.

Now that JR has explained the scenario a little, it makes sense. Victoria obviously is a victim of its' own success I guess in the amount of material produced. (Staying away from issues of Quality here)

In the other thread on this topic, someone mentioned starting a collective store to sell all local band material. Not a bad idea, but quite possibly not a very viable one either. Any non-Day-Job musicians out there who want to start running it had better speak up now. No matter what it would have to be done for the love of it...

There is nothing wrong with encouraging stores to accept a single (and free) copy of a given CD to ascertain whether the material fits whatever niche is being occupied. Once better known, possibly the stores will at least know what it is they're selling and have a better idea ahead of time of the sales potential. - Tue, 4 Apr 2006 2:43pm Edited: Tue, 4 Apr 2006 3:07pm
