as of late I've been getting more and more into this genre . . mostly funeral doom but I'm usually up for anything; although, I'm trying to shy away from the stoner-esque stuff. looking for more stuff in the vein of Nortt, Evoken, Sunn0))), Thergothon, Morgion, etc. - Mon, 27 Feb 2006 10:42am

Acid King, Sleep, Nice Cat.

In 2000, a 3 disc compilation cleverly called 'Doomed' was released. I don't find all of the bands on it are particularly Doom-y, but a 3 disc compilation is a good way to get entrenched quickly.

I'm surprised no one mentioned Cathedral yet. Their debut Forest of Equilibrium is seminal, one of my very favorites.

Also try Thorr's Hammer, Stephen O'Malley on guitar and a blond and fair Norwegian maiden on grunt vocals...what more can you ask for? Be sure to keep the two r's in mind, or you'll end up with a very shitty Polish fascist black metal project.

Has anyone heard Coffins? The gutcrushing Japanese answer to Hellhammer, Autopsy and Winter. Yes, they have some (relatively!) faster parts. http://www.coffins.jp I would sell my...appendix just to see a tour of these guys with Sigh and Gallhammer.

But lo and behold! This year will see the rise of Victoria Northern Doom outfit Solar Winds. And that's all I should say at this point, hehe. - Sun, 5 Mar 2006 12:00pm

Well, thars a load of doom for me to hunt down.... anyone have a mixed CD for my discman?

I personally have been having a hard time removing the new Earthride- Vampire Circus CD. Stripped down heavieness with a touch of Lemmyesque vocals. ..... AND DEAD!

I also have to blab about Spirit Caravan... if anyone remebers St Vitus,,, Then Spirit Caravan is Wino from that band. They have a double CD of all thier stuff and the first CD is also one that i spent lots of time with.

These arrrrree the two doom metal bands on my list... but i really don't get out much in the doom world.

Solar Winds.... when do we get to see/feel live action?

MELVINS.... man oh man.... I should get a newer release. I have the gluey portch LP that i bought just after that life changing music moment i had. I went to Harpos in 86 or 87. These three wierd lookin guys got on the stage.... They where'nt even on the bill. They just got on stage and said "Hi we're the MELVINS." .... no body moved then the volume hit us like a wave. The heaviest drums with the most amazing driveing guitars. I remeber standing on the dancefloor with one other person... my friend Chris Buck. We both felt something that night that was spiritual... it was the fuckin MELVINS....
although thier record never captured that live show. it wasn't doom it was raw power!

Yeah I was one of the ten or eleven or so others who were at that Melvins gig. Buzz had the "Rock'n Roll Over" sticker on his guitar, and they did at least two or three Kiss covers. The inestimable Rick Andrews (hope that dude's doing o.k. - been ages) was right up front with a couple of others as they slammed their fists in the air (in chorus!) to "God of Thunder". Killdozer headlined, if I recalll correctly - also a wonderful, special, heart-warming band.

/"Echo Head", off G.P.T., is still their anthem, IMHO. - Thu, 9 Mar 2006 8:10am

I never mentioned this because I thought it would be a given, but how could we not mention Candlemass?!?! I bought their 'Live at Frysheset 1990' DVD some time ago, this band is one that has influenced many. - Sat, 11 Mar 2006 1:06pm

Probably because Mito-Shawn was "looking for more stuff in the vein of Nortt, Evoken, Sunn0))), Thergothon, Morgion, etc."

Otherwise I would have named a hundred more doom bands. Including Candlemass! So here's another: Pentagram. - Sat, 11 Mar 2006 5:45pm
