Hey everyone, this is it! We're ready to let you preview the new versions of the sites and we're hoping you'll be as excited about them as we are. You guys on this message board have contributed a lot of valuable ideas (& complaints!) over the years and since a lot of you have been with Nev & Scott etc on this from the beginning, we wanted you to be among the first to give us your thoughts.

The new versions can be found here:
LiveVic http://www.beta.indivisionnetwork.com/lvbeta (address is temporary til we move it over to LiveVictoria.com)
and LiveMusicVancouver http://www.LiveVan.com

The sites feature new looks (by Dani Vachon), functionality improvements and clearer explanations of how things work and why we've put things together the way we have. The previews are hooked right up to the live database, so any changes you make to your profiles, or posts you make to this board, will affect the data on the live site. So just use these new versions from now on.

I know that this is the message board and like me when I first visited LiveVic, a lot of you probably don't venture too much further on the sites. PLEASE take some time to do so now! Try listing missing shows or editing your band or resource profiles, update your rosters or just listen (finally!) to local audio off the show listings page. You're all a part of something we're really proud of here, so let us know what you think.

We depend on you guys to let us know what works and doesn't, and which direction you want these sites to go in, so always feel free to contact us with your feedback. Especially for the next week or two, until we take the sites live and start publicizing, we'll be putting on the final touches and listening pretty intently to your comments. So get to it:

I dont know if it's possible, but I always thought one thing that would be helpful is in the "Musicians" section it would list their age as well, so if you were looking for people for a band, you could easily browse for someone in your age range.

Other than that, I love it. - Fri, 3 Feb 2006 11:47pm

i like the new look... but as for the age thing, i dont think it matters as much as people make it out to be. It would feel weird, at least to me, if i were searching for musicians and narrowed it down b/c of age. Maybe utilizing the listings of what bands people have been in or at all, or perhaps finding a different way to categorize musicians in terms of proficiency other than using age. Proficiency and confidence in your instrumentation is what counts!
anyhow, the look is a nice update from the old - Sat, 4 Feb 2006 10:36am Edited: Sat, 4 Feb 2006 10:39am

This has been brought up before and is still occurring:
In the band info section, when you click on "visit website" it still adds a backslash to the address, meaning any MySpace accounts come up as "page not found" - Sat, 4 Feb 2006 12:01pm

Looks decent but.. this is something I noticed before and still notice.. Why when starting a thread there is no option to insert a picture, but when replying to a thread there is a browse function?

Also I find when reading topics the colour difference of grey to black makes it a bit harder to differentiate between the posters, whereas with the current white and grey background its much easier to follow. - Sun, 5 Feb 2006 11:11am

Thanks for all your comments - seems like we did alright, then! Griphin, we're especially relieved that you're ok with it.. it seems like you're our mainstay so its important that you're comfortable on here. :)

We worked with Dani from Cadeaux to get the looks we wanted, and she does great work so we were pretty confident they'd fly. And now stylesheets are in place so that we can replace colors & designs pretty easily whenever someone's into it or we get bored.

So Cooper and Aidan, the slash problem was corrected, but now bands just have to update their profiles on this version to remove them. I'll ask Nev if he can auto-remove them, but I doubt its possible. When I asked him about it a few months ago he said there was a good reason he put in the slashes in the first place, but couldn't remember what it was... haha. - Sun, 5 Feb 2006 12:17pm Edited: Sun, 5 Feb 2006 12:20pm

Re the age thing, thats a good idea. Right now musicians can be searched based on a few criteria (including level of proficiency), and we can build in more, but the question is whether we should. This applies to everything on the site.. deciding where to set the limits. Nev & I have to compromise on a lot of stuff one of us wants and the other doesn't. Ideas get considered from all angles, and then filed away for future versions if they don't make the cut.

Anyway, indicating your age is optional, and right now it is visible right at the top of profiles, so its easy to spot and move on. J, we totally agree with all you said, but the age thing was Nev's idea and its in place because very young people can be just as intimidated as older people from responding to ads because of their age. This way its all out in the open. Its about making sure everyone feels comfortable and welcome enough to get involved and make music together at any point in their lives. - Sun, 5 Feb 2006 12:27pm Edited: Sun, 5 Feb 2006 12:29pm

Hey Mike! (btw, I finally listened to the ML7 stuff a while ago and what was cool was that it turned out to be something that had pricked my ears up before when I hadn't known who was playing!)

Thanks for catching the picture problem, I'll tell Nev. I also just noticed that after posting a msg, it doesn't auto-scroll down for you to where your message appears.

That sucks about the grey to black thing though!!! The difference is really obvious to me and its beautiful, I'd hate to have it messed with.

Is anyone else having similar problems with visibility on their screens? Thats pretty important stuff because I know of another guy who couldn't view any of our old show listings on his screen.

What about keeping things up to date?

You can still get Hot Hot Heat's "information" of livevic!

Is there a way to keep stuff up to date to know if some bands are stil around or if venues still allow live music there? (as some places have banned it)

I talk to Nev about this once, not sure if he remembered it... kinda like the backspace ;) - Mon, 6 Feb 2006 1:48am

Hey Guys,
Ok I've fixed the problem with posting pics, and I've removed all the slashes from the myspace URLS, I also aded a link at the top of threads, that takes you right to the last post. I can't make it audotmatcially take you to the bottom, after you post, for now this si the best I can do.

I've played around with different shades of grey for the backgrounds and I foudn it looked really bad as soon as you increased the contrast, is anyone else having a problem with this?

PS, all these improvements are only available on the new version of the site, see links at the top of the thread. - Wed, 8 Feb 2006 3:05pm Edited: Wed, 8 Feb 2006 3:09pm

Matteus,
You have a good point, and we've actually got a plan for dealing with it. The system can send emails requesting that bands/resources update their status. We haven't done it in a long while because we've wanted to get the new version of the site up live first, but as soon as it's live, we'll be sending tons of status requests and hopefully weeding out the obsolette information. When I say, weed out, I mean that it will remain in our system for histrocial record, but it will be flagged such that nobody looking for current bands/venues will have to see it. - Wed, 8 Feb 2006 3:20pm Edited: Wed, 8 Feb 2006 3:23pm

Did any musicians try out the band roster & musician projects features? He did a nice job on those.. they link really well now.

And in case no one noticed yet, you can listen to bands' audio right from a show listing now. You can listen before you decide on which show to go to. - Fri, 10 Feb 2006 1:05pm Edited: Fri, 10 Feb 2006 1:15pm

a suggestion for the up and coming/show review section;

an input box for the date of the show, so that you can clearly see what date the show is happening on. also, easier to remove after the date has passed.

this also pertains to my suggestion for the show reviews section; i don't like wading through similar thread with no reviews and a bunch of pre hype. i think we could cut down on the number of threads by going back to the old system of creating a review at our leisure. also, this should have a date input box maybe even a venue input box too.

those would be really excellent additions, i think. - Sun, 12 Feb 2006 9:24pm

Just a suggestion if you're interested....

In the Musicians listing area... what about adding in an extra menu to search musicians by musical style as well... For example... S.I.C.K. is looking for a new bassist... when we do a search for bass players, we get a listing of all genres of music... preferably, it would be cool to have a menu and search for anyone with a metal influence, etc...

Thoughyt I'd throw my 2 cents in there... but the new version of the site looks awesome... can't wait for it to go live

Ok..... we'd already decided not to move threads to Reviews anymore, unless it turns into one. It was just an experiment that plain sucked.

There's a more complex longterm plan for the 2 msg board sections, so I don't think we'll build in the date boxes. It just wouldn't be worth Nev's effort right now, since its going to be changed anyway. Good call though, and you'll get it in time.

If you're not seeing the sites like the screenshots, can you let us know some things like:
- your browser type and version
- your operating system (windows, Mac os9 Mac osx etc)
- maybe your screen resolution

And hey Flee, stoked that you like it! :)
Nev made the very good point that Musicians are a lot more flexible in the styles they'll explore than most bands are, so we aren't anxious to force them into categories. We might just do more to encourage them to elaborate in their own "style description" areas, and then improve the abilities of the search features. You can already search for mentions of metal though.
Thanks you guys! speak now or.. nevermind. - Wed, 15 Feb 2006 10:22pm Edited: Wed, 15 Feb 2006 10:27pm

wow, new site is amazing. thanks for the good work. I would like to coment that it can be hard to find a show sometimes becase they are listed by the promoter putting on the show, not the band or venue. and as someone who has put on shows in the past I know that lots of these aren't actually promotion campanies, they are just names made up by the bandmembers to sound cool. sometimes there is a show listed here twice, once by the band and once by the promotor And there are bands listed that broke up 5 years ago. lets erase some of those listings - Sun, 5 Mar 2006 7:30pm

thanks, its really been our pleasure.
The show listings default is in order of venue. I guess its hard to tell that since its formatted so the promoter & bands appear first. If you can think of a way we can clarify that, or change the way it appears, let us know.

We try to catch doubled shows, but maybe we'll put a reminder in the "list a show" window for people to check before re-listing. If they're in some way affiliated with the show (i.e. are in one of the bands or are the promoter or venue) they'll automatically/already have editing access anyway.

And "The Professor" talked about our strategy for archiving bands a few posts ago. It'll get cleared up soon.

Great comments! - Sun, 5 Mar 2006 10:20pm Edited: Sun, 5 Mar 2006 10:22pm

The light blue seems to work. Yeah, you just look for those message headers in bold now to see if the message is new, which is hard to see (at least I found it hard to see). Also, you guys ever thought about creating a list similar to the live shows list which mentions which CDs/demos are being released on the days there released? I know, sounds silly, but it would be nice to find out when a bands work is avaliable. Just a thought! Archiving of bands? Well I'm gonna work on the VDRP demo/CD release page, when I get it completed I'll post the link. Tons of work to do as is.

Also, did you know you cannot delete threads with the new code? (Well you probably did, actually) - Mon, 6 Mar 2006 11:21am Edited: Mon, 6 Mar 2006 11:25am

Sorry we didn't respond earlier Griphin. I was waiting for Nev to. :)

We'll be taking it live any time now. You'll know if things go dead... but it'll rise soon after, I promise. Fingers crossed all goes well.

We're going to stay with the color scheme we've got for now, but we'll keep that one in mind. I wasn't aware our msg headers bolded, but I'll ask him about it.
You seem to be the authority on all things demo-release related, so we should probably discuss your ideas sometime - they don't seem silly at all. It could work out being an important feature of the site, that maybe you could manage one day, since we need people as dedicated. Looking forward to seeing your page done. There sure seem to be a lot of archivists in Victoria.. cool. - Wed, 15 Mar 2006 11:27pm Edited: Wed, 15 Mar 2006 11:35pm
