CELTIC FROST Saturday September 30th, 2006 @ Sugar Nightclub

Advance Tickets Only $20.00 - On Sale January 21st @ Lyle's Place, Ditch, And From http://www.ticketweb.com

Yes we know that this show is only ummm 8 months away, but we figured quite a few of you would want to know about it now! Btw there will NOT be a Vancouver stop on thier tour, so people from the mainland will have to travel here for a change!

The band consists of 2 of the 3 original members Tom Warrior (guitars and vocals) and Martin Ain (bass). The drummer position was always a rotating lineup, and they never had a permanent member in that spot. The band have not toured in 15 years in North America and will be playing all the songs that were from the era that they were considered legends in the making... - Sat, 14 Jan 2006 5:07pm

Vancouver fans are lambasting the fact that there is no Vancouver show, and that they have to travel to Victoria to see CF. Time for everyone here to get on the Celtic Frost forum and settle them down! Go to http://www.celticfrost.com and click on "Forum" on the nav bar then "Touring Info" on the forum menu to retaliate. When you're done doing that go back to the main CF site, and click on "Itinerary" on the nav bar if you want to see the Victoria date officially nestled somewhere between Wacken Festival, and The Filmore in SF!

Just a note...this show originally started off having to be an early show with an 11pm curfew. Although doors will still be at 7pm (with the first band going on around 7:30 - 8pm ish) there is no longer a curfew to adhere to, so expect an extreamly full and longer night of metal and drinking!!!!! - Wed, 16 Aug 2006 9:43pm

Originally this show was going to be an early show with an 11pm curfew. This no longer is the case, and it can now go as late as it needs to. This means there was now room to add local support so we put Gremory on the bill. We've left doors at 7pm, and Gremory will hit the stage at about 8pm, followed by 1349. Shag, & then THE MIGHTY FROST!!!!!!! Expect things to wrap up sometime around 12:30 / 1am ish. This will leave people enough time to go somewhere after like Big Bad Johns or Logan's with some friends where one can drink a few more pints and discuss burning down a church or two.

PS. There are still some tickets left, but they are selling quite fast. - Fri, 29 Sep 2006 6:17pm Edited: Fri, 29 Sep 2006 6:19pm

Great turnout for that show.

Gremory yadda yadda, you're always good live.

Sahg was "ok". The vocals were a bit off for me. I couldn't get into it in that degree. I wish I wore my Xasthur shirt to this show because I hear they hate Xasthur haha.

1349 I had heard before and dismissed as just over-blasty black metal ala: Dark Funeral (who I like). Seeing them live they sounded different...but I couldnt make out much musically. I mean I guess it's black metal in that way but...still...friendliest black metal band i've seen though. The lead singer coming down handshaking the crowd? Not very true.

Celtic Frost played their new material which I cannot stand. They played stuff off To Mega Therion and Into the Pandemonium which was allllright. Why was Tom G. Warrior wearing a toque though??? I mean bald is very metal. VERY. And the one guitar player had that Skinny Puppy thing going on which was fucking weird. Oh well they were entertaining enough. - Mon, 2 Oct 2006 2:05am

Excellent show overall.

I thought SAHG was definately a nice change from the norm. They had some very catchy parts and the vocals were pretty good. Although after awhile it all started to sound the same. The last song was awesome. If they would just keep playing the heavy parts and less solos then that would rule.

1349, was pretty much what I expected. Fast, standard, generic black metal. The singer sucked. The drumming was good though. They were entertaining nonetheless.

CELTIC FROST was outstanding. I had a great time. Who cares if he was wearing a toque. I mean, it would have been very hot for them on stage, but they totally had it together. Not very often Celtic Frost would ever play in Victoria. SKINNY PUPPY is great... what is the skinny puppy thing they have going on? I think people just expect them to play all this old stuff like Hellhammer even, sure that would have ruled, but overall their set was awesome! - Mon, 2 Oct 2006 7:17am Edited: Mon, 2 Oct 2006 7:33am

Missed Gremory.
Got there just before Sahg started their set. I thought they were on third but I guess I got the wrong info. A lot of people arrived halfway through their set and weren't too pleased. Anyway, they had some of the clearest, thick sound I've heard in Sugar yet. They played their Ozzy Sabbath styled tunes well and did not disappoint me. It was great to have such variety on the bill, as clearly the crowd was split when it came to genre preference.
Which brings me to 1349. Their intro noises were impressively huge and I was preparing for a barrage of huge black metal madness. Instead, the band started up and the sound of 50 mice farting through toy megaphones came forth. I am not sure if they are any good because I couldn't decipher much of the sonic turd flying around the room. I could see that the drummer was a maniac. Judging from their albums, they are talented and tight. However, there was no evidence of this on Saturday evening. Too much treble didn't help. The best part was when everyone who was totally into 1349 was getting pysched up during the intro, then they began and no one seemed to know what to do. The worst part was the headache they gave me which lasted until the next day.
Celtic Frost was stellar on their old material. Circle Of The Tyrants alone was worth the $20, but they also burned through Procreation, Dethroned and Return To The Eve, among other classics. Martin Ain was fucking great. Total insanity from one of metal's true madmen. The sound was just mind-numbing with all that thick bottom end and crisp guitars. The new stuff was not as effective, but they still had the kachunk going on.
All told, the show was cool. Saw lots of old friends and long lost faces.
The afterparty was interesting. The guy that got completely tuned at the spot had it coming. I was saddened when Lance was pulled off the guy. He deserved to be knocked unconscious and thrown off the balcony.

Much of this is rather new to me, I reall come from an anarcho punk background nd only a couple yrs ago started getting into crust and grind and power violence. It wasn't till I met wolf and iskra that I started to get into black metal, so I don't really know alot, but...

Unfortunately I missed gremory, they are still one of the locals I have yet to hear much of, I came in durring their last song.

The second band, whom I never heard of, was surprisingly different thyan I expected for this bill, at first they sounded ok, kinda powermetal, but after a while they started to sound like a cross between ion maiden, ozzy, and nickleback. OUCH!

1349, did not even come close to living up to my expectations... sad, I expected a show of a life time... But instead of mass chaos, and over the top antics with feirce black metal, we had a stage performance that was mediocer, every song starting and ending exactly like the last... Seing the guys come out in make up with their costumes, all black metaled out, was really ruined by the plastic water bottles in hand... As well the sound was terrible, it seamed to take the whole set before you could hear the band, and still the vox were not near in line with the guitar....

Celtic Frost was amazing, sure not quite looking like I expected, especailly the slipknot guy, but the music made up for the crap I had to put up with through shog, (or what ever their called) and the lack of quallity of 1349... I loved celtic frost...

Over all 2 things could have made this show, 1349 needed a good sound check, and having mito open...lol

any one else thought that it would have been 10X cooler to see a band like 1349 in a delapitated illeagal squat house enviroment??? - Wed, 4 Oct 2006 1:47am

Sahg did a solid job, eventhough it didn't have that "edge" to really keep me interested. It was just a little too tame. The Pentagram cover was great, and the peak of their show. The bass player's poses got kind of annoying after a while.

1349...well I've seen plenty of generic fast black metal bands over the years and this was certainly not among the top 25. The only really memorable thing about 1349 is drummer Frost's ever amazing performance, though none other than Tony Laureano was his replacement on this tour. Unfortunately he seemed a little sloppy, especially his bassdrum work.

Like Mr Hell already pointed out, what came out of the PA after the intro finished was just terrible. It was like pulling a grim and frostbitten souffle out of the oven and watching it shrink instantly. It didn't help the songs themselves very much either, they didn't really seem to go anywhere and it was hard to make distinctions between parts and songs.

Visually, the band was boring too. And what was with the bass player's "intermezzos" of hitting some random low notes in between the songs? It didn't make any sense whatsoever. As a bass player you can only pull such things off if your name is Cronos.

People told me that the last song was quite good and had an improved sound. I wouldn't know, my walk around the Harris Green area was alot more exciting at that moment.

And then....UGH! My god, what a performance. Opener Procreation of the Wicked was just crushing. What followed was like walking through a museum filled with Old Masters. One classic after the other. Frost has tuned down the guitars and slowed down key parts of songs along with it, which totally worked in my opinion. It added a ton of heaviness to every song.

The sound was quite bassy and I hoped that throughout the set the bass would go down a shade and the guitars would shine through a bit more, but I guess that is impossible for a sound man to achieve within a time frame of over an hour?

Tom and 2nd guitarist Anders might have been a bit stiff, visually, Martin Eric Ain stole the show in my opinion, though his "prayer" in German kind of missed the goal.

Too bad about the complaints about the way the guys looked. "Slipknot"?? "GOTH"?? Really, compare them to band shots of 85-87 and the only difference is a lack of poofy hair, a few spikes and pants that were too tight. And if you didn't expect to see all that, then I guess you didn't really realize the vast influence that Celtic Frost has (indirectly) had on today's scene, including goth and nu metal.

Anyway, awesome performance, needs to be topped by the same band in about a year - year and a half, same city.

By the way; Cold Lake is actually a cool album. - Fri, 6 Oct 2006 1:55am

What ever happened to Celtic Frost.
Is it true that they got lost.
In the pandemonium.
Never to be seen again.

Tom Warrior fell from a tree in cherry orchard.
Martin Ain drowned in a cold lake.
Reed St. Mark went to Mega Therion.
And remains there 'til this day.

What ever happened to Celtic Frost.
Is it true that they got lost.
In the pandemonium.
Never to be seen again.

Tom Warrior is waiting for the emperor's return.
Martin Ain's trapped in the circle of the tyrants.
Reed St. Mark was blinded in the crypt of rays.
Where he remains 'till this day.

REANIMATED……. - posted by The Rod

Here I sit in my basement on Tuesday night at 3:09 AM.

We, True and relentless Thrashers, are back from our voyage. Me, Hannah and the snoring necrofecalizerknown as Mike A.(check out putrescence.com to see the specimen) spanned 5000 kilometers, stood on an overcrowded bus between two cities, caught every subway and bus know to humans, and spent every last little red cent we own to see Nomeanso, Sacrifice, Celtic Frost, Misery Index(twice), 5 other good bands, three decent ones and 2 crappy ones.

Me and Hannah were front row for the grandest display of thrash metal to be witnessed in the last 17 years. SACRIFICE brought the goods and destroyed 700 headbangers at Torontos’ “Opera House.” They are still the greatest!!! The REAL kings of thrash. Let no one tell you otherwise. Ever!!!!! To witness them once again was absolutely unreal.. I had always thought that the first time I saw them was one of the best days of my life. Now as an adult that thought is confirmed. They have now been responsible for the top two days.

And so, with our broken necks and brains bareley hanging onto their stems we crossed the icy plains to witness Switzerlands Mighty Celtic Frost!! Once again we were front row thrashing our heads off. They were awesome! the only thing they had going against them was that we had just seen the greatest show of all time. We went crazy. the highlights were “Circle Of The Tyrants”, “the Usurper” and the ripping, thrashing, stupendous “Into Crypts Of Rays!!”

And finally tonight, we went to see Misery Index who, despite coming after three days of Nomeansno, Celtic Frost, and Sacrifice, managed to pull us to the front of the house to throw our fists up in disbelief at their amazing drummer, great songs and dense, wicked grind-metal.

I will not scold or scoff and the dismal fools who missed such ripping tunes. And I will refrain from hunting down and beating to death anyone over the age of 9 that went to Bad Religion instead of Celtic Frost. I will just say to the world that thrashers are all we have ever been and all I will ever be as long as I live. I have no other good reason to live. I need no other reason. When Propagandhi comes to your town beware that we are inspired and our hearts pump with excitement for the day that comes when it is our turn to attempt to make the heads bang. and right now, way more than before, we feel like we have the ability to deliver!!

There is no way to explain what has happened to us this weekend. All’s I can say is that the world of music is still devasting!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! the best days are right now!!!

-Rod."
