In spite of 7,000+ new seats in the City for prime concerts- 'name it'- most recently bands like 'Judas Priest' and 'Alice Cooper' played BC venues in Vancouver, Vernon, Chiliwack and Salmon Arm, but passed on Victoria.

Okay, WOW, just today that 'Motley Crue' was added to play Save-on Arena in April and 'Brian Adams' has scheduled a second show for January. BFD....

What's the deal, the place has been open since May?

You might think the place would be booking more concerts than this... I would anyhow... - Fri, 25 Nov 2005 12:33pm

I thought we were doing pretty good. However, I wonder if the ferry has anything to do with it. Or logistically we are only 40 miles from vancouver. Perhaps the booking agents look and say "Oh, they are close". Cheers Lucius - Fri, 25 Nov 2005 12:59pm

No friggin' way man,~ these bands are guaranteed big $$$$ it's peanuts for them to get on the ferry each way, and without a doubt most booking agencies cover these travelling costs. (and even if they are mostly wittless Yank and Brit bands and agents are 'avoiding' this place) These other cities- you'd have to know exactly where you were playing; if you were playing at some speck on the map, in the middle of nowhere small town, like Salmon Arm, no? Or Kamloops for that matter...Boring... I mean these kind of concerts remind me of like when John Cougar was doing his 'Pink Houses' tour and you could win a 'Pink House' somewhere in the middle of B.F.E. Indiana somplace.
Like who wants to go hang out 'in a small town' like Salmon Arm? Or Vernon, or freakin' Chiliwank? That I'm really jealous that they went to all of these places except Victoria.

Considering I've been to all these places? I'd be the one paying the ticket and Ferry Costs to travel to see them play on the mainland.

Best and only Concert I've seen so far play at 'The Arena' was 'Robert Plant and the Strange Sensation', and I think it had to do with the TIMES COLONIST not giving him a review or a write-up on the concert, him refering to "'Canada' as being a 'Sub-continent' to 'Mother England.'"

(Besides the comment that 'Robert Plant' made- I still say the band at least deserved a review from the old geezer cronies down at the paper.)

ANyhow here's my review....

"Canada' as being a 'Sub-continent' to 'Mother England.'"
- a typical pop-culture necrophile, but even worse a typical brit who holds the old stale belief that Canada is nothing but a colony to the queen with an Oedipus complex. What a jackass.

Anyway, I think the main problem with the arena is that we're given sad leftovers (see abaove). Washed up artists, a few bad reuinion shows that will probably get them booked at The Blue Pearl next time they come around. I think it'd be great if House Of Blues or whoever promoted these shows would show a little initiative and give us something decent. - Fri, 25 Nov 2005 2:22pm

Who none other than 'TicketMaster', to whom the majority of the concert promoters deal... This Arena deals with some other ticket entity. W.T.F... is http://www.selectyourtickets.com? (Is this the reason why we get the leftovers?- although I'd say it was nice that I was able to see the concert and R.P. is way more than just his -one-liner-bantor shenanigans b.s.)

Well 'selectyourtickets' sure ain't no 'Ticket Master'...!? If that's what you were thinkin? IMO and Yo Mama, if you say so, then throw me down some dates to when this "supposed" and 'alleged article review on the Band' was written... (I know there was a preview- didn't see no 'review')

FYI- I don't believe as much as the article was even written little lone proof of your employment down at 'The Dump' is true. (Show me a date and I'll look it up as proof in the library)

IMO- both the T.C. and Monday Magazine are 'Cheapskate Enterprises', who like to underpay their employees and undermind the solidarity of Unions. Really that I don't know the inner-working circle of employment in M.M. only that I avoid that Left-wing, 'hippy magazine' drival at all costs.

BTW and 'Oh Yeah, I used to work (subcontracted for over a year)at T.C. also; as a truck driver and I'm 35 yrs old so,' [A sign that I don't act my age- as proof]:P!

Wheate... Chillax dude.

yeah, it's kinda' allright to see when someone like "ALICE" plays in a town like 'Salmon Arm'... Typically, you might think he was there not only preforming, but adding more to his personal 'Spider' collection in Salmon Arm. (That I was there last week- I've seen tons of spiders in S.A. in around the summer months)

I used to live a few short blocks from Alice's home in Paradise Valley. We used to tour up in that neighbourhood once in a while and look at his house. And talk about how he probably wasn't one of those people who called the 'Exterminator' as most everybody does in the State of Arizona. - Fri, 25 Nov 2005 6:01pm

In reality, the main reason is because of something called a BC Ferry and we live on an island. Management for these bands never book Victoria (I guess they feel that the fans are located on the mainland) and it pisses me off. Not to say that we don't sell out arenas when bands are "nice" enough to play here. Yes, I'm still bitter over this. - Fri, 25 Nov 2005 8:39pm

That's what the City loves to have everyone in believing, that I'm really leery as to why 'Ticket Master' isn't part of the sales distribution at the Arena? (Not that I really care much- cuz 'T.M.' charges horrendously outrageous surcharges on tix- just as almost anyone who sells these tix) Only that it would be nice other than to wait 4 and 1/2 months to see a decent arena band play here.. - Fri, 25 Nov 2005 9:04pm

also if you play a show in victoria, and you bus the equipment over, you're crew can't get off the island until 7am and won't be going to wherever they need to go the next day by 8:50ish when they finally get off the ferry.

alot of bands crew pack up and leave right after the show.

not to mention save-on-foods centre is a cheap POS. On the inside it looks like an arena that could of been built 30 or 40 years ago. The seats are hard plastic and cheap, no room in the seats. I'm 6'2, and i went to def leppard, and they guys behind me wanted to sit down, i would anyways, but if i'd wanted to, i couldn't because my knees jam on the seets in front of me.

not that that would stop a band from coming, but theres nothing special about the arena. Maybe it'll just take a while to grab some more of the older bands that are willing to play smaller arenas like SOF centre. The arena itself is really too small to get anything other then that (or maybe get up and coming bands, which would usually play something a little smaller then SOF centre). - Sat, 26 Nov 2005 7:37am

Mace, in regards to your "Wheate....chillax dude." First of all, I can't believe that you said chillax. Secondly, you should know that both Wheate and myself are former Salmon Armenians, who like nothing better than to poke fun at the town and the concerts that it attracts. His post was totally sarcastic, except for the last sentence. There are always lots of good local shows, so I'm not gonna be too upset if I miss out on seeing Judas Priest or Alice Cooper.

That being said though, I'm not too sure why more bands aren't booking shows at the SOFA, as it seems like most of the ones that have been hosted there have been a pretty big success, if you're judging success by ticket sales. I think over the next year we're gonna start seeing some decent bands playing the venue. - Sat, 26 Nov 2005 8:21am

wow what a bunch of cofused fucks!
we have had about 15 shows in 6 months plus curling and plenty of hockey games. the old joint never had this much action.

give them a chance to get it all rolling. many concerts are booked nearly a year in advance. they couldn't book shows last year for this year because the construction was a year behind schedule and i'm sure they were worried about opening at all this year.

also selectyourtickets has nothing to do with the booking of the shows they just sell the events that are booked by the booking agents. - Tue, 29 Nov 2005 10:33am

Aaaahahahaha ! The SOFA ?!!

We had the Barn , now we have the SOFA !

Not one of those luxury fine hand crafted sofa's,

.... but that low-end imitation Wally world put together with sub par materials, slapped together in a hurry , uncomfortable when sitting in it and a little wobbly . We’ve all had one …you stretch out in it to get comfy and your feet hangover the edge , tripping everybody who walks by and everyone complains that they can't see the tv when you're just trying to adjust yourself to stop your lower half from felling asleep .

$80 and up for Motley ? Insane .

I'll go to the Commodore in Van and see bands I’m really interested in , in comfortable, whilst eating chicken wings in a real mans chair with a tall cold one in a mug , one hand on a booby and the other fingering through good copy of " High times "! Or maybe it's the other way around ?

The SOFA owes the company I work for over 20 grand , you wonder where then money all went ... check under the cushions or down the back of the couch ... just watch out for the cat piss (bull shit). - Thu, 1 Dec 2005 3:18pm

What are cha' talkin' 'bout Willis!? These people don't sell tix for free, there's a ticket surcharge included in the entire price... At least $6-$10 bux a ticket.

Discernably, In lieu of who is promoting the show; complacent of who's designating the ticket sales for 'X' show- reticent that somebody's gotta' be taking something off the top or at least making somethin' off the side!? There's gotta be an 'XY'factor who in return spins 'X' the big wheelspectrum of the entire function ='Z'.

About the big screen? Damn that thing is dangerous...!? Mace.. i never said they did it for free. you should set up your own company and sell the tickets for the arena then you could get the 6 - 10 bucks.

i guess victoria isn't ready for an illuminated billboard. i wonder how new yorkers do it. there must seven hundred accidents a minute in times square. i guess just take it down and replace it with a sidewalk sandwich board. that will impress the visitors. while were at it lets shut off all the lights on the outside and in the lobby of the arena.

i have the montly crue dvd, and no matter how hard i try i can't seem to touch the titties on the tv. i hoping from the 8th row i'll be in close range of those tities.

i rarely go to shows in vancouver cause it cost me $300-400(ferry,food,hotel,gas) and the band i'm i'm going to see is getting less than $20 of that.also it's takes like 24hours to do the round trip, for a 2 hour show. $85 and i can eat and sleep at home if i wish. or with all that money i'm saving i can go out for dinner take a cab and drink my face off for half the price and still get up in the morning and go to work putting your money in my pocket. - Fri, 2 Dec 2005 12:35pm

Big ticket shows few and far between

Former U.S. president Bill Clinton sits between Betty Bumpers and Sen. Dale Bumpers.

By Brennan Clarke
Oak Bay News
Sep 13 2006

He may not be a rock star, but at least Bill Clinton has rock-star status. And that's a quality that has been notably absent from the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre marquee in recent months.

Clinton's Nov. 10 speaking engagement, announced last week, is one of only a half dozen events scheduled for the 7,000-seat venue in the last six months, not including Victoria Salmon Kings games.

The last musical act to play Save-On was Godsmack on June 23. There won't be another until the Black-Eyed Peas return Oct. 7 for their second show in 16 months.

Barring any concert announcements in the interim, live music fans will have to wait until February when the Barenaked Ladies come to town.

There was a professional wrestling show in July and there isn't another event of any kind scheduled until Sept. 30, when evangelist Billy Graham's grandson Will is slated to host a Christian rock revue called "Ignition: a Message of Hope for Victoria Youths."

The only other events between Sept. 30 and the new year are the Canadian Home Builders' Association Home Design Show (Oct. 13-15), and Skate Canada International Nov. 2-5).

Dave Dakers, facilities manager for R.G. Properties, the company that built Victoria's arena, said the gap in entertainment offerings is nothing to be concerned about.

"Summer is normally very slow, and last summer was exceptionally busy," Dakers said.

"The only month we didn't have anything was August."

In the final six months of 2005 13 big-name acts performed at Save-On, including Jann Arden, George Jones, Bob Dylan, Avril Lavigne, Paul Anka, Def Leppard and Nickelback.

The arena, officially opened March 26, 2005, hosted 23 shows in its first eight months of existence.

That pace continued through the first half of 2006, with 15 shows, including Bryan Adams, Motley Crue, Rob Thomas, Bachman/Cummings, the Black Crowes and Hilary Duff.

Asked if "dark nights cost money" in the concert business, Dakers said "not in a properly managed venue."

The arena is doing well financially, he added.

"We're very satisfied from a business point of view where we're at," he said.

"It costs money to do shows you shouldn't do than to not do shows you shouldn't do."

About 3,000 tickets for Clinton's upcoming appearance went on sale last week, ranging in price from $75 to $175.

Staff at the arena's box office said there are still seats available, but added it's likely the event will be a sellout.
