This thread was inspired by the Diss a Nickle Back thread. Would you play what you preceive as sell out music for a heafty sized amount of money?
I would do it in a heart beat. Sure you wanna pay me to play guitar. It wouldn't even be a question for me. How about YOU? Cheers Lucius - Thu, 17 Nov 2005 11:47am

i consider selling out as when you compromise your ideals for monetary gains, when you do something you would not otherwise do simply because it is lucrative.

with that said, i dont think i would consider selling out, but then again, everyone has a different idea of what selling out is. and so my not selling out, might be someone elses selling out. - Thu, 17 Nov 2005 1:11pm

Maybe. Depending on what type of music it was. If it was a genre I could give two shits less about, sure. - Thu, 17 Nov 2005 1:38pm

"i consider selling out as when you compromise your ideals for monetary gains"

That about sums it up for any artist, musical or otherwise. I don't think people that make the music they want to make and earn a good amount of money deserve to be penalized for it or called sellouts. Quite the opposite - I think people that create what they want on their own terms deserve more, not less.

Unfortunatly it seems to go the other way around. - Thu, 17 Nov 2005 1:50pm

$1,000,000?
Yes. I will play whatever pablum that is required. Of course, I'll still be doing the music I enjoy as well. And it won't be for the rest of my life. Let's say a year or less. - Thu, 17 Nov 2005 3:49pm

I currently work in an office doing data management, and I'm getting a hell of alot less than $1M

Making music for even the shittiest band on the planet would be preferable to doing any ass-licking 9-5 job, or even most sweet 'normal' jobs.

The only case in which I would not 'sell out' is if said band had a strong message that I was morally opposed to (like a racist band or something).

And with a million dollars you could afford some damn sweet gear, and nothing could stop you from making killer tracks on the side. - Thu, 17 Nov 2005 4:06pm

It's not even a question, most of us would do it because we are raised to believe having such a large amount of money would equal happiness. Of course it doesn't, and you can blow a million bucks almost as quickly as you could blow a thousand. And then the ideological "keep playing the music you love" or "go back to it" would become overshadowed by a chance to make another million. You sellout. (he says to no one in particular)

Everyone compromises their ideals for monetary gains. It's called your job.

We should all look towards those rare few folk and punk personalities who have managed to keep playing good music and never compromised. Pete Seeger is one, I think maybe the Dead Kennedy's? Not too sure, but I know they're out there.

Real happiness is playing music with your buds, not giving a shit about money and rocking everyone's minds out at your shows. Oh and getting laid afterward by some stranger. Yes, happiness. I'll let you know when it happens to me.

It's also nice to not go into debt from making the music you like to play.
I think using the masses of sheep to finance what you really want to do is a romantic idea that most musicians would LOVE to be able to live out.
It'd take me a lot longer to spend a million than a thousand. Mind you, I'd probably do something boring with a million bucks. Something like make more money off it. - Mon, 21 Nov 2005 6:30pm

I'd play drums for Hillary Duff for for years (250 g a year) without thinking twice about it. I also think that I'd be broke and out on the curb for breach of contract after about 6-8 months cause I'd have to be pretty messed up to listen to that shit every night - Tue, 22 Nov 2005 10:31am
