That emo looking crowd sure has a lot of endurance to sit through all that went on last night.
Thrones were pretty cool.. interesting textures. I need more rhythm but thats not what its about.
Boris were really good, but after all the shows I've seen lately where intensity and precision were so featured, they paled a little in comparison, which isn't fair. I liked how their phrasing wasn't predictable - they polished up the ends without the normal fills I'm used to. But 3 songs in, their (most impressive) guitarist turned to the side and my jaw dropped in concern. I swear she was so skinny her forearm was larger than her entire shoulder. She played well though, so hopefully she's healthy, but I have not seen a skinnier girl staggering on the worst part of Hastings. I feel badly that that threw me off. Anyway, in addition to the more active parts, they had the balls to incorporate long slow meandering noisey/atmospheric turns, which exhausted me by the end. A pretty great set.
Sunn O))). About 5 minutes in, with my entire body quivering, I was seriously going to pass out so I went and sat at the back. That was an incredible, oppressive wall of sound if there ever was. Not my thing, or maybe I just didn't have the stamina for it.

Thrones - Interesting set that consisted of a massive pulsating bass sound, drum machines, sequencers, vintage Sunn amps and a ton of floor pedals. Some slight technical clitches in the overall consistency, but a really solid and unique set.

Boris - Performed with tons of conviction and intensity, beginning with several numbers of high energy, yet unique 70's flavoured heaviness. After the bulldozing rock songs, they shifted to the final song that was a long drawn out jam, with a wash of dreamy effects that built until the final climax. They had so much vintage gear onstage it was incredible, both the guitarist and bass player had huge pedalboards full of rad effects, of course more Sunn and Orange amps, and the drummer frequently used the giant gong behind him. I wasn't offended at all by the guitarist; she was a really talented musician who kicked ass, and cute Japanese girls playing heavy music really competently rules. Comparing her to some E. Wastings junkie aint right.

Sunn O))) - One of the most monolithic and punishing sets, I've seen. The ritualistic atmosphere complete with black robes and very little lighting really complimented the hypnotic efffect of the performance. Onstage was completely lined with amplifier stacks in which the two guitarists and peripheral synth players fully utilized, in addition to another stack (Ampeg 8x10!) laid on it's side directly at the front of the stage. All amps of course were, you guessed it, Fuckin Sunn O))) of course! As for the music, it was just a punishing "invocation of crippling (droning) Doom" which never relented, and completely shook the Brickyard to submission. I stood at the front the whole time, and the sheer sonic energy emitting from the speakers was incredible, enough to rattle my half filled beer right off. The ending finale was especially epic as the gong was used to it's full potential again, for dramatic effect.

Killer review! My weak-ass one is only up because so many good Vancouver shows go unacknowledged here.
Please re-read what I'd written. The word I used was "concern". I was not in any way offended, and didn't intend to liken her to a junkie, except to stress that I was shocked by her skeletal shoulder. It wasn't meant to cut her down. - Fri, 28 Oct 2005 12:33pm
