K.C. User Info... | I just got my copy of Chelsea Wakelyn's debut album and I haven't stopped listening to it. It's the one with the little girl on the cover sitting in a corner. The songs reflect the little girl's shy, quiet melancholy. Lyrics like "If heartache is a lake, I'm drowning in it" and "I'm wearing thin. I'm wearing nothin'". Hit you like vocal catapults from the unassuming sad child. The highlight track "Little Girl Blood" shows her in a fit of self-loathing anguish, so far past belief in the world that she retreats to the mystical, where she finds no relief: "I'm littlegirl Blood. A festering sore on the cock of the Lord!", she screamsobs, like your thirteen year old sister throwing a crying fit. The sound quality is amazing, sparse, dark and sinfully sweet thanks to Mike Hall. This is the best production effort I've heard of his to date. The sounds range from solo reverberating electric guitar (Chet's Ryan Beattie) and voice to a full Nashvillian sounding band (Victoria's "The Lonesome Valley Singers". And fronting it all are Chelsea's stories of love, heartache, faith and m istrust; sweet like blushing, bleeding, poisoned wine. She also covers one of my favourite David Chenery songs, "Blood Red Sun". The way David's words and melody blend seamlessly into Chelsea's record proves to me unequivocably that these two were made for each other. And making another... -Thanks Chelsea, -k. - Wed, 26 Oct 2005 1:53pm | ||
