| notmetal User Info... | Such a great time! I missed most of Assimilator cuz ONLY LOSERS MISS OPENING BANDS, but what I heard was solid.. must catch more of them and want to! What did strike me was the killer sound.. it was beautiful, big, ballsy, pristine, with warmth/tone all over those guitars.. love that room. Antiquus is actually quite a great band. I remember thinking how these guys could easily & triumphantly(!) pull off big stages and big rooms. The first part of the set kind of held me captive (total pros in every dept, impressive energy), while the rest got a little too melodic and meandering for my taste. I must admit that I'm simply not someone who's ever fully appreciated that style of 70/80s power metal, so I can't truly give them fair enough props. Its just not my love. I can say they're probably the best around here at what they do and I cannot imagine them EVER disappointing fans into that sort of thing. Now Widowmaker played the best set I've ever seen them do BY FAR. Again, I have no real history or sentimental attachment to these styles of metal, so earlier on when they came on the scene and grabbed a few peoples' interest, I felt out of the loop. All I got out of it was the intent (which alone was a beautiful thing!), but not the real goods. Then one by one I started recognizing individual talents.. one time the vocalist, the next a guitarist, the next the drummer, etc. But last night it all came together and there was absolute RELENTLESS energy coming off that entire band. I heard influences that I'm more familiar with which had been hugely responsible for fueling my interest in metal way back. I'm not generally a fan of the wanky guitar work featured in metal, but their guitaring was so sweeet!... and rhythms SO unbelievably driving, right through to the very end. The vocalist is one of those who has a surprisingly eclectic range and throat(?) capabilities and possesses the type of frontman's spirit and energy that propels the band together into a focussed unit if ever they let up. The drummer, who I've spoken with and have some regard for, but who I'd lamented that "too bad he's not a great drummer", revealed himself as a superb drummer! The arrangements were such that they had respect for each others strengths, i.e. room was given by all to help in featuring a small but killer guitar part, or a particularly cool fill. That was just such a kickass set.. I must have banged my head throughout from the state of my neck and shoulders today. Who needs to see priest anyway. - Sat, 22 Oct 2005 4:35pm | ||
