WOW

Great night, great times, all friends up front - couldn't have had a better night.

Even Despised Icon didn't damper the evening (not to say that they were good, but they weren't as annoying as last time - plus I got to do some wicked sweet SCENE fight dancing)

and the new Cryptopsy is awesome - F you all who don't like it. I love it. - Tue, 18 Oct 2005 10:29am

Aborted: Great set. "Invagination" is a very good song, though im slightly dissapointed they didnt open with it/use the "the doctor...is in" intro sample to it. Had i not known most of their songs i probably wouldnt have enjoyed their set as much though. Also, who knew gore metal vocalists like tool (in referance to the vocalist's shirt)

Suffocation: Jesus titty fucking christ they better fucking come back; that was easily the best set ever played in victoria in a long time. I have seen Suffocation once before and i think this was the better of the two sets. Opened with Infecting the Crypts, closed with Funeral Inception, all memebers in full view at all time, great sound (the kick sound was apocalyptic!!). FUCK - Tue, 18 Oct 2005 11:10am

new Cryptopsy songs are WAY better live. it's because the production isn't carrying onstage.

this whole show was awesome. one thousand thumbs up to all the bands except Despised Icon who sucked. - Tue, 18 Oct 2005 1:46pm

I was most excited to see Aborted because I had never seen them before, and I found their new material to be a little bit 'breakdown heavy.' Goremageddon was a highlight of their set.

Suffocation were fucking in fine form, much like the last time I saw them. Fucking brvtal. Their vocalist is really powerful. Damn.

I enjoyed Cryptopsy's set a lot more than their last time in town. I never liked .. and Then You'll Beg on CD but that song (we bleed?) they played from that album was non-stop fucking insanity. What a fun show. Was perfectly drunk the whole time. Great sound. Awesome venue.

Can't wait for behemoth in December! And Exhumed in November! Victoria is on the fucking map. - Tue, 18 Oct 2005 2:22pm

this show was way better than i expected it to be.. i missed despised icon, from what i gather i didn't miss much. caught most of aborted who were pretty rad.. didn't think too much of the vocals at times. Suffocation played a set that totally blew me away, despite not being a total death metal head and familiar with alot of their material. good pressence on stage, really like the vocals and the drum riffs. Cryptopsy also blew me away.. i was not expecting to stay for their whole set because ussually i get bored with hour long death metal sets. ability of everyone in the band is amazing.. samples in between songs and eating worms from a silver goblet.. awesome! sound was good in sugar as well and in general this seemed like alot more lively show than past death metal shows.. but mabye thats because i didn't drink. - Tue, 18 Oct 2005 4:55pm

This show was abso-fucking-lutly insane! Although, with aborted and suffocation on the bill I didn't really expect anything less than amazing......it feels like my vertabre from the middle of my shoulders to the back of my skull have fused together from headbanging too hard. - Tue, 18 Oct 2005 5:07pm

Heavy, heavy, heavy. Review follows: I've never really liked Despised Icon, either live or the couple of tracks I've heard in passing, but they actually impressed me last night. I still have no time for the "RAH RAH" fist pumping harcore vocal style, but beyond that issue of personal taste, they were pretty good. Aborted were lots and lots of fun. Good sound, great musicians, some sweet windmill hair whip action. I actually like their more breakdown-heavy stuff, too. Suffocation was (were? whatever ...) the reason I came, and they did not disappoint. Hell of a stage presence, and wicked performances all around. Also, they played Torn Into Enthrallment, so I went home happy. I've seen Cryptopsy twice before, and they were on last night. Our good Lord Worm was extra-creepy-good, and they all tore it up, particularly the guitar player who looks like a klingon. Sweet skullet! Looking forward to Exhumed, now, and finally seeing SOS up on stage in them crazy getups. - Tue, 18 Oct 2005 5:34pm

Second time seeing Despised Icon , I thought they were great and a vast improvement from last time !

So… fuk chu mang !!

An chu no who’chu r.

We all left from good ol'Mikes (sorry about the revisit, fucking women...lol) house with NapalmDave ( C/A=computer alliterate , I'll talk to you on that big red ringy thingy..) , Graham (emgs going to waste bro, pawn the tv next time ! ) , Darryl ( got parts and combo switchbox ... stop laughing.... ) and Brenda ( best women in the world ….that’s what she tells me ; )
Got there after many cool tread burn outs ..yea haw !! The Redneck are going ta town !!!….oh that reminds me no cops to be seen ..damn is this a fukn metal show ?
Ok we have the dark dressed hooligans drinking in the parking lot ...
Check

WW age being smoked in abundance ....check

4 women ... Check , ok,ok it's a metal show !
I must've walked in and out 6 times to smoke, read my bible and have a good cognac , no problems, no fights , enjoyment had by many, frivolity….. morally bankrupt .
……and if someone pisses you off you just shoved’m from behind and duck down , sorry Chris, Kirk , Mike, Simon, Aaron ,Criag .. Ah shit everyone !! Hey the place was packed and I got whorely drunk and talked gibberish to lord worn ,that including getting the shredder for Suffocation to autographed my guitar strap ...

…..only problem is it was a Cryptopsy strap and I mixed up the longhairs .. the joke about getting the drummer from Suffocation to sign, the me figuring out why you all were laughing and me figuring out the fact that I am a total loser and should be drugged and shackled to the bar ....good one ! Duh...
Icon was real good ( fuck another good shredder , I'm going to take up the bong...old school of course .)read above blah blag blal ..aaa

Aborted was ok , voc’s yes they have them . I don’t remember man .. Ok I might’ve been outside doing charity work for the upper room , by the way my empties are up for grabs AFTER I’ve drank them, not before there open. Unless it was the door crew … hey those were for charity man ! It was a Alcohol relief effort !

… but lets be honest there was a sound problem , the same problem that seems to plaque this place and this time it was different every band ..? No idea . …ok ..well maybe if when the guitarist is doing a blistering change over to a ripping progressions , you might want to turn that up and the base and drums down , put yea know … it went the other way a few times through out the night …no idea? ….ok I do maybe some better stage monitors . Nuf sad .

Suffocation even in my fucked up state was blistering on the guitars (when I could hear it ) , finally went to the back and the sound was better but couldn’t see ….so did I say I was drunk ?

The cryp kickers were awesome and I do believe it was White worms to start , last year I was talking to Jon about that song at the jam spot and he told me about writing it .. Wish I could remember what he said ?! Lol ! Sound problems again and I had a little trouble distinguishing tunes .. and maybe not their best show . No encore ?
Maybe it was a little late !
Staff +1 , you are becoming one of my favorite places to see show … but open up the mezzanine people ! Come on the place was full , it would’ve been good to see from up there and I did hear someone get the hassles for just standing at the top of the stairs … come on .

After party ? No idea ? What home and I even took the day off today !

Where are all those coke sluts when you need’em ? I think their with DD ! - Tue, 18 Oct 2005 6:50pm

Wow!
Despised Icon: I caught their last song. Didn't realize it was them, because it sounded more like their old stuff {which I do like}. What I heard was better than last time they played Lucky Bar.
Aborted: Didn't hear much of their stuff beforehand. I found their fast, technical stuff to be impressive, but a little generic sounding to my jaded and grouchy ears. Their more grooving riffs with the insane drumming is what really made me a fan. Well written sections of pummelling aggression!!
Suffocation: Fuck yes! Unreal. Brought back so many memories. I hadn't heard the song, 'Breeding The Spawn' in 12 years {traded my tape to Lyle's Place for some CD years ago} yet I remembered every nuance. Great stage presence! Terrence Hobbs...holy fuck! A great guy and a guitar god. Didn't think I'd ever get to see Suffocation here in Victoria in my wildest dreams. A buddy of mine left halfway through their set and they're one of his favorite bands...how strange is that? Best sound of the night. I could actually hear some of their guitar at times thanks to the extra mid-range they pushed through.
Cryptopsy: Always a pleasure to see the guys. Their new material rips at a ferocious pace. Reminds me of 'Blasphemy Made Flesh' in a lot of ways. Flo was acting like three drummers rolled into one up there. Lord Worm was his usual articulate and cordial self, with a side order of evil. The axemen were on their game. They were sorely missing their old soundman, Jake Disman. They should come back with Cephalic Carnage at some point. Can you imagine how over the top this show could have been with Cephalic?!
Overall, I preferred the Opeth show in Vancouver on Friday, but this was a radically different kind of thing.
Thank you Atomique!! - Wed, 19 Oct 2005 5:42pm

OVER THE TOP! But I envy you guys in a smaller venue. Suffocation's drummer was way the hell out at the very back of the Commodore stage! Even being at the front, I was itching for a better view of both drummers.
Missed most of Aborted due to the door guy saying the times HOB quoted were wrong and they were starting an hour later. boo. Got back to the door and "hey you were right, they did start on time!" grrrr. Caught some, but not enough. I think I liked though!
DI's music/vibe was disruptive on this bill and those h/c punches and banter are annoying. And that lone guy in the pit with his arms raised, methodically jumping straight up and down for minutes on end can go too. I could not get far enough away from that stage. And why force them down uninterested throats having them play 2nd? No No NO!
Cryptopsy however, hit unbelievable heights. HOLY long set! Exhausting. Almost made up for my harsh crime of missing them last time.. made my night for sure.. a thing of beauty.
And Suffocation.. sigh.. I'm so happy.
Look! We're all happy! *clap clap clap* - Wed, 19 Oct 2005 6:49pm

Could I really add more to the reviews? My post would pretty much be an echo...but I'll try to cut this down to the important stuff.

Despised Icon: Yeah, I do despise their Icon now that you mention it. Nothing more to say that the Mito boys couldn't point out.

Aborted: A fine grinding piece of gore/death metal! Not innovative really, by any means, but just all around fun! Constant windmill action and pummeling grooves, great shit!

Cryptopsy: I got to feast on one of the worms that Lord Worm handed over..so I am worthy. A true honour I could never forget. And I did enjoy their set, a nice balance of every album (not that I had a problem with their 'None so Vile' set last year, personally that was my favorite set.) But the sound was much better too! Tight as always, they did not disappoint.

Suffocation: Yes, hearing "Torn into Enthrallment" off 'Pierced from Within' was refreshing...since I grabbed that album in 92 as well. Still have that one actually, and never did I ever expect to hear them to come to Vic! I loved Frank Mullen's antics on stage; hilarious shit! Truly a classic band that combined groove and brutality, which makes Death Metal so much more enjoyable to listen to, in my opinion. Truly the kind of style that gets me into Dying Fetus and Deeds of Flesh, Suffocation is truly one of the bands that set the standard!

Not to mention that with the exception of Despised Icon, all the bands went well with each other. Thank you Atomique for the wicked line up! (Unlike the Opeth line-up....ow....ooooooowwwwww....that was so fucking painful. Opeth's set was great...the remaining line-up and the crowd pissed me off, but I'll save that for another post.) - Tue, 25 Oct 2005 12:52am
