Ghost Reveries, the eighth release from Opeth, is a prog/death metal masterstroke that sees the Swedish five-piece honing its sound even more than on previous releases like Deliverance and Damnation. Uniting their love of progressive and symphonic music, and drawing on everything from blues to jazz, Opeth once again demonstrates why it is one of the most interesting acts on the death metal scene. Even with those elements in place, though, the band never forgets why it formed-to assault listeners with pitbull riffage and a relentless rhythm assault. By continuing to challenge listeners and themselves, Opeth has become one of the most fascinating bands to come out of the European metal scene, and earned a serious, ever-growing and passionate fanbase both at home and here in North America. | Mr. Hell User Info... | I went. S.T.R.E.E.T.S. were ok. For some reason they just don't hold my attention very well. The had good sound though and the guitar tone was quite solid. Too much feedback bewteen songs. When it's that loud, it's not a good idea. Fireball Ministry were not as engaging as I was expecting...but that's what one gets when they expect something. They had a fill in bass player from the band, Puny Human. He was very talented, but obviously didn't fit in with the rest of the band. Only two songs noticably changed tempo in the set and the rest of them kinda dragged along at a restrained pace. They didn't play 'Two Tears', so I was somewhat let down on that point. Between F.M and Opeth's sets, I went to the can and was greeting while coming out by a fucking moron barfing into his hands. It was spraying through his fingers and I managed to avoid most of it, but some hit me. I would have punched him but his hands were filled with puke and I had enough. If anyone knows who that was, kick him in the shin for me. Opeth completely ruled! They definitely slayed their Sounds Of The Underground appearance. They played a fairly wide spectrum of their repetoire, although I felt they could have done well to include a few more tracks from their newest release, {ie. 'Reverie/Harlequin Forest' and 'Ghost Of Peridition'}. The allowance of the crowd to handle the middle verses and chorus of 'In My Time Of Need' was a great touch! I also was saddened to not hear 'The Drapery Falls', but I have no real complaints...although this was one of the few shows I've seen in the last two years where I didn't want them to stop playing. Another hour or two of Opeth would have suited me fine. My favorite quote of the night came from Akerfeldt prefacing 'Deliverance' in his gentleman's challenge-you-to-a-duel voice: "I must tell you that this next song totally fucking sucks...but we're Opeth, so it's still pretty good." In closing I urge people who haven't taken in a Opeth show to go and damn well see one already!
