I scored a free ticket to this so I figured I'd go.

First off, the atmosphere. The Royal Theatre is a huge venue, pretty fancy, I've actually never been there. Yes, I'm just a typical kid who's used to local community centers as venues. The lighting was superb and there was a smoky purple atmosphere. I dug it. There was quite a mix of people. Mostly really old people, some dressed really fancy. I was one of the youngest people there.

Started with Joe Coughlin. I saw him last year at Jazzfest I think and wasn't too impressed. This time around, I was fairly impressed by the individual musicianship of his band. But I don't know if it was the volume levels or what but they really didn't seem to come together and blend. Brilliant guitar, piano, and bass work. I can't say much for Joe Coughlin's voice though. It doesn't sound very musical. I'm not sure if he gets gigs through pity because he's in a wheelchair, but I don't think that his voice alone is anything amazing.

That said, they played some cool tunes. Some standards I knew, which is always good to hear.

During the intermission, I got pizza with some kids and stood outside.

Then, Michael Kaeshammer blew me away. Amazing. The lighting was a perfect compliment to his group's playing. And he was an AMAZING piano player. Immaculate timing, super complex playing, lots of crowd pleasers. He did a lot of odd stuff.. some examples:
-muting the strings of the piano with his fingers and playing with his other hand
-strumming the piano strings. Actual chords. I don't know how he did that. Maybe he held the notes that weren't in the chords with his other hand?

He played a lot of standards, boogie-ish with really hip innovations, etc. The bass player and kit player were also amazing. His voice, when he sang, was smooth and he would honestly have been great if it was just his voice. But his piano playing was the real showcase.

He played some songs with really really weird time signitures... kept a really steady complex groove with one hand and played amazingly eclectic solo stuff with his other hand.

I loved his technique and everyone was spellbound. I'm suprised he hasn't gotten more exposure; I've seen a lot of bands with way more exposure but only a fraction of the musicality and talent.

I've been trying to track down some of his stuff on the internet and having difficulty. But if you missed the show, you missed something amazing. - Fri, 24 Jun 2005 1:50pm
