Fucking rad. Fucking rad.

Pushing Up Daisies:
These guys are great, no denying that, however, I did have one issue with their set. It was too loud. I think that tends to be a problem sometimes. I know that it makes me sound old or something, but there does come a point where everything just turns into one blur of noise.

But they're still rad, and I baught three CDs (two for friends who are away).

Black Tie Social:
Who I payed to see, and worth every damn penny. My favourite band in Victoria, hands down. The new songs were kicking, especially the first one. I think one of my favourite parts of their set up is watching Katie looking for as hell as Aidan and Jason scramble to get everything together. Also, Aidan had a new guitar. Tele, but not a fender. It had really weird picup configuration. It was interesting.

In Media Res:
Damn these guys were good. Add them to the list of Vancouver bands to bring back*. The guitar player was crazy, and I liked watching him freak out like a mad man. Muahahaha. Good stuff.

Maurice:
Ironically, my least favourite of the night. Not saying they're bad, but I just liked the others better. Had to take off a little early, so that of course could have swayed my opinion.

Also, I thought the projecter idea was cool, but needs some work. I think it would be cool if someone had like a projector hooked up to a laptop, and the band could customize a slide show or something. It would be more unique and cool I think. Just an idea.

Anyway it was a great show, and to all who missed it...

Good show, really good, especially for $4. How much does little fernwood cost? It's a cool venue.

Troy and I arrived early and helped carry a speaker and some band equipment in, then sat around. Then we accidently started attracting a crowd inside so we went outside to make sure people knew that the doors weren't open yet.

Had our lemons out. The lemon thing is a scene thing from way back, clearly.

The venue itself is a nice room similar to the 50/50 or the multicultural center.

Pushing Up Daisies:

I've seen them a lot of times and they don't disappoint. I'd say this wasn't their best, but they are great. Played lots of songs I knew. I disagree about being too loud; I thought the levels and volume were great. I didn't really have any complaints. It seemed a little like the crowd was still getting into the show and they were setting up the atmosphere. Jack had his usual stylish moves.

Black Tie Social:

These guys have become one of my favourite local bands. I really like the experimenting with various pedal effects and such. Like that song with the bow and looping thing, I know they've done it before but it's cool. I really like Aiden's voice and he seems to have a lot of ideas. Was the keyboard player not able to come? Or is she cut? I think a keyboard really suits the band, but I would definetely dig some more experimental synth stuff rather than just typical keyboard hooks. Then again it's those hooks that make the songs so catchy and dancable. The set was rad and full of energy. I took way too many pictures.

In Media Res:

The whole fuzzy tv transition to the video playing and that song.. that was amazing. I really liked their style when they played louder and technical stuff. I wasn't much for their approach to slower sensitive songs. There were some really amazing moments. I loved what the guitarist did. Really inspiring. They freaked out and had a really hip stage presence.

Maurice:

I think they got off to a so-so start. Energy picked up later. They weren't my favourite but they are a good band. The waltz was fun and people followed the example darcy and I set. They have a pretty cool sound.

I think some kids trashed the bathrooms? Someone smeared paint on the walls and now my favourite zip-up is ruined. Fuckers.

The kids at the show were cool. There's someone who I had a weird internet fight with but I didn't really talk to her. The turnout was pretty good? It annoyed me when people sprayed the watergun at my pants to make it look like I pissed myself. Lots of my friends went so I enjoyed that.

So I took hundreds of pictures as usual. I'll put them up on my site tomorrow probably ( http://members.shaw.ca/xtylerx ).

A really great show, with really great bands.

(the) Pushing up Daisies - I have to agree with Pete. While they are a really good band (I wasn't too sure about the Weezer cover though), their set did seem a little loud, and made it generally "muddy" sounding.

Black tie Social - A fantastic band. It seems they keep adding little pieces to old songs, making them sound fresh. I also really like the new songs. Keep at it.

In Media Res - Really liked them. I would probably describe them as a very mellow (comparably) Mars Volta, at least that's what I thought. They had a lot of good sound structure, and many good dynamics.

Maurice - Maybe one of the best sets I've seen them play. I really really REALLY liked the last two songs, but all of their songs were really good. - Sun, 22 May 2005 9:28pm

Tyler, there is no such thing as taking too many pictures.

This show was awesome, and definitely made me remember why I love the Victoria all ages scene so much. Unfortunately, I only managed to catch the last song of Pushing Up Daisies' set - sorry guys. I really wanted to see more, but alas, that's how it goes sometimes. What I did hear sounded good though!

Black Tie Social was, as usual, solid and creative. These cats have got it together. It was a little strange seeing the band without keys, but they still managed to make the songs sound full and cohesive. In short, it was an excellent set, and I can't wait until the next show.

In Media Res was a neat band - the effects they had going on were really interesting, and they added a lot of depth to the standard spazzy guitar fare. The televisions and the projection combined to make a really great backdrop for their sound; it was fantastic to be able to join the audio and visual aspects of the show in that manner, and pull it off so well!

I enjoyed Maurice quite a lot. The waltzing was fun, and as usual they did an excellent job of Norwegian Wood. I also liked the dancey numbers towards the end of the set. It was an especially cool contrast to the low-key set they played last night at the Spiral Cafe; I always find it interesting to hear the songs in an acoustic setting and then be able to compare them to the full-out electric version.

Big thanks to Aidan for throwing this whole shindig together. It seemed to turn out quite well, especially considering the last-minute scramble to find a venue and all! - Sun, 22 May 2005 9:47pm

I missed pushing up daisies,

bts - the first song the new for black tie was totally my favorite, all the bands were good that night but there
were only a few moments for me where I got fully into
it that was one of them from the very start of that
song. awesome, i'd like to hear it again.
THe second song was european car crash i think,
that was tight too, and the ending of the show
was awesome. It looked like everyone played well and was
having fun.
Scene break love is one of the only songs i've heard before
by you guys and i've always thought it was catchy and good
but tonight i wasn't feeling it i don't know why,
I have no trouble saying this becuase jason is an amazing
singer but the background vocals sounded awful to me,
like they didn't co-exist well with aidans, as in i liked
aidan's but not the anyone else who sang in it.
colin disagreed with me, i don't know, the song just didn't
seem to have it tonight imo.
Individually you all sounded quite good.
start and finish of pavement = money

In media res - i was pretty blown away at some parts,
i'm about to go listen to the cd right now,
when you forget about everything around and you are
100% focused on a song and completely lost in it
hearing every little detail of each instrument while
also hearing everything as a whole too,
instant enlightenment, I got this feeling when i walked
in near the start of their last song.
Seemed like great guys too...

Maurice - Totally pro these days, I really liked the
first song. Some of Maurice's songs totally grip me
but some don't. A lot of them redeem themsevles at parts
for me at least, or maybe I just judge them too quickly.

I usually write long, thorough reviews of each band, but for this one I'm just going to sit back and enjoy the memories. I had a lot of fun at this show, seeing four incredibly talented bands, each with their own flavour of creativity. I'm about to listen to the In Medias Res disc, and will be sportin' their t-shirt proudly. We should feel very lucky to have been graced by their presence this past evening, and let's hope they come back after a successful tour of Canada these next two months. Thanks to the great crowd for being so supportive of all the bands and not causing a ruckus! If every all-ages show could be like this, we'd never have a problem putting on more shows. A huge thanks to Aidan Knight, members of Black Tie Social and their extended family for their help in organizing the show, as well as the cleanup afterwards.
All 3 Victoria bands have upcoming shows in the next month, so be sure to head on down to see all of 'em again!

I had a pretty killer time at this show, I gotta say. There was rock n roll everywhere you turned. I only caught the end of Pushing Up Daisies because I had to go and remind myself of the lyrics for one of our new songs. But the Daisies are a sweet band and an awesome bunch of dudes and I'm glad they were there.
Black Tie. We had a good time playing. The highlight for me was seeing people singing along to Pavement City and Silver screens, especially Peter.
In Media Res were dope. They brought the rock to another level. One of the songs started off pretty chillaxin and groovy, and then the guitar came in... Paul and I looked at each other like "holy shit that's fucking awesome."
Then there was one... Maurice. I remembered last night that Little Fernwood is where Connor and I played our first gig together. Ah, memories. They say your first band is your first love, and you never really get over your first love. I have never gotten over Connor. Maurice was dope though. I was glad they played Heavy Heart. Clearly their best song, with the waltz coming in a close second. Ther was much dancing and interpreting happening during that one.
As was expected, a dope show. A big thanks to all the guys who helped out... Paul, Nathizzle, Devlin. You guys are my world. - Mon, 23 May 2005 8:36am

guys, i'm sooo glad that so many people came out on a relatively short notice to the show. i really enjoy putting these shows on because i LOVE every band.
the show couldn't have run as smoothly and looked as good without the following people:
zoe, mischa, nathan, paul, devlan, don, carolyn, tyler (and his super friends), dave, and the rest of the clean up or load in crew.. if i've forgotten your name i'm sorry!
i saw some old friends, and met some new acquaintences (awesome and not)
and got to see all the bands sets. i loved the reaction that the crowd gave to each band.

pushing up daisies were very much excellent and i look forward to doing probably the 10th black tie-daisies show real soon. please please please catch these guys soon (and as often as you can) because they won't be in this town forever.

black tie social. we had a good time, and i guess all we can hope for is you did too!

in media res. oh my damnit. i've been waiting for five months to hear these guys live, and i don't think anyone in that room yesterday could deny that the energy on that stage was massive. they are incredibly nice boys, and i hope that we can have the pleasure of having them back in town soon!

maurice. they played heavy heart, and i love them for it. i heard some new songs last night that i really enjoyed. i've heard some new-ish songs previously and didn't dig them as much as their old tracks.. but the tunes last night were solid and showed real maturity in their song writing.

again, i hope everyone had a good time. and now i am incredibly sick and at home for at least the rest of today. so that can only mean it was a full night of solid rock. OW! - Mon, 23 May 2005 8:57am

Really good show. Little Fernwood is a nice little venue. The stage and projector were cool. Thank you Aidan&co for another rad show.

Pushing Up Daisies - I really enjoyed their new song and the first song they played. Fun set.

Black Tie Social - Awesome vocal harmonies and catchy guitar riffs. The songs always seem to be changing. European Car Chase and Pavement City were sweet.

In Media Res - So much energy and amazing musicianship. I wish I had picked up a CD. Hope they come back here soon.

Maurice - Superb as always. I agree with Joni, there is quite a contrast between the accoustic and plugged in sets. Rockstar and Heart Heavy are intense and awesome. Can't wait for the CD.

Thanks to all who came out and rocked with us despite other show going on!

Pushing Up Daises- I love these guys with a burning and firey passion. They set my world on fire that night and today I have second degree burns because of it.

black tie social- I had so much fun playing that set. I was bummed about not having a keyboard player that night but it turned out preatty good anyways. (I think.)
On that note, we do have a new keyboard player! His name- Matthew Davidson. Check http://www.bugdrop.com. And if you come to a BTS show you might just see a guest appearence from DJ Anti-Social. (on keys and turntables!)
Thank you to every one who was there. You guys made the show. (Obsidian Fortress UNITE!)

In Meidias Res- I have been waiting to see these guys for months now. THEY FREAKING SLAY! I cannot stress over the internet how bloody much I love these guys. Their set... amazing. It was certianly a throwdown to remember.

Maurice- If I had a nickle for every time Connor broke my heart I would be a rich man. I love that band. I love that band from the bottom of my soul and with all the pain in my gut. They played great. Hands down the best band in the city. I know that is a huge statement to make but I firmly beleive it. What else can I say? They played "I Need A Woman" first just for me! I love you JP. I love you.

P.S. Check out black tie with Maurice @ Diegos night club on June 3rd! - Tue, 24 May 2005 6:38am

hardcore munchies?
what?

i want to bring back IMR and have a five band lineup with some more killer bands, but break the mold even more by doing a full out multimedia visual-audio thing in a large room (think white eagle):

two projectors = one found footage (like at fernwood), one digital (custom to each bands set)
stage lighting - which i thought would be impractical for lil ferny.
and a slightly larger PA - i thought the sound was alright, but could've used some more headroom... i didn't realise how loud PUD and IMR were.
i want to do it all for a five dollar ticket price as well. sure, i guess that's ambitious.. but we made exactly enough money at the fernwood show.
by the way, thank you to everyone for buying tickets in advance from ditch records, it was one of the best pre-sale all ages they had seen. i will be doing that again. mhm.

and with an even better five band lineup, more time to get the room ready pre-show, and food and drinks at the show... i hope that i can have it doable for november.
anyone into helping out?

ps. if you have friends in other cities, plug IMR. like say.. thunder bay?
