Message Board > Album Reviews > Woods of Ypres - The Pursuit of the Sun and Allure of the Earth |
Platoon User Info... | Pursuit... was the second album from Woods of Ypres. The first album was titled Against the Seasons. While Pursuit... has more clean vocals when compared to Against the Seasons, it is also about twice the length. Pursuit... continues to show how Woods seemlessly melds clean vocals with black metal vocals, and acoustic or clean guitars with a black metal distortion tone. The melding of the clean/black vocals and guitars is seemless and is very smooth sounding. I find the album is very easy to sit and listen to as it clocks in over 60 minutes. The next album has been described as faster than its predecessor and should be out sometime this year. I highly anticipate this next release to see just where this band is going. - Tue, 3 May 2005 12:03am
Jaron Evil User Info... | This one's pretty damn good actually. Reminds me a lot of Opeth. Definitely a worthy band with a very worthy release. - - Tue, 3 May 2005 4:01am
Mutilashawn User Info... | Very reminescent of Opeth!! I would be hesitant to label this as black metal . . . though it is very harsh at times, yet equally melodic. Good stuff. - Tue, 3 May 2005 2:09pm
The Other Nick User Info... | I listened to a bit of this and agree, the "black metal" label Woods of Ypres tends to get is fairly misleading. - Tue, 3 May 2005 6:58pm
_Griphin_ User Info... | Woods of Ypres?!? Never heard of them. - Tue, 3 May 2005 9:07pm
Platoon User Info... | I would agree that Woods of Ypres is not Black Metal. The styles and influences within Woods of Ypres do contain black metal styles and influences. Woods may not be Black Metal but they are certainly influenced by Black Metal and it can be heard in some of the vocals and music. Against the Seasons is definitely harsher that Pursuit. If someone were to say Against the Seasons was Black Metal I may not disagree so readily. - Wed, 4 May 2005 12:13am
Jaron Evil User Info... | In point of fact, Woods Of Ypres actually classify their sound as "Summer black metal". They print it right on the album. - - Wed, 4 May 2005 2:42am
Mutilashawn User Info... | post-black metal maybe? but then that's just getting into stupid genre policing. either way this is damn good. - Wed, 4 May 2005 11:30am
Platoon User Info... | Yeah, either way we are all just splitting hairs. It is wicked music. Classifying bands into sub-genres is always contraversial hahaha. But the fact that "Summer Black Metal" is printed on the album cover makes you wonder just what that means. I guess Summer Black Metal is Black Metal about Summer versus Misanthropy or Winter? Almost like Gore Metal and Death Metal in a sense. It is kind of funny because Black Metal is a sub-genre of Metal, and now we have a sub-genre of a sub-genre in the form of Summer Black Metal hahaha. Oh god, no more genre talk. - Wed, 4 May 2005 1:40pm
The Other Nick User Info... | the best sub-sub-sub genre ever is "Black Funeral Doom" - Wed, 4 May 2005 10:19pm
Platoon User Info... | lol, what bands make Black Funeral Doom? - Thu, 5 May 2005 12:10am
Mutilashawn User Info... | Nortt!!!! - Thu, 5 May 2005 12:38pm
Starry_Wisdom User Info... | The Funeral Orchestra. In some ways, Xasthur have a black metal sound that can be quite doomladen at times, in fact I find Nortt's atmosphere kindof similar to Xasthur's.. - Sun, 15 May 2005 6:19pm
