Trent lost his roots. He's trying to be mainstream now. Lost respect for him. - Fri, 22 Apr 2005 11:46pm

I don't think he lost his roots in trying to be mainstream. To me, this album sounds like all his past material. Maybe that's the problem, for some of you. You can't always expect something incredibly new and exciting.

But that's a problem with this album. Not really new or exciting. Every song seems to follow the same formula of repeating the same phrase over and over and over again.

"All The Love In The World" - Boring.. but I like the piano bit
"You Know What You Are?" - also kind of boring
"The Collector" - boring again
"The Hand That Feeds" - I like the little synth interlude but still this is not really exciting
"Love Is Not Enough" - boring
"Every Day Is Exactly The Same" - every song is exactly the same
"With Teeth" - A-with-uh-teeth-uh... that's getting annoying... the song has some cool parts
"Only" - funk-angst? hah.
"Getting Smaller" - I like the groove this song has
"Sunspots" - boring
"The Line Begins To Blur" - boring
"Beside You In Time" - I find this song amazing. This is the one I find myself listening to over and over again. It's that vibrating off-tempo synth atmosphere... and then later it turns into this really awesome driving feel at 3:40... this song was on the trailer for the album... it's maybe why I was let down by all the others. A lot different than other nin songs.
"Right Where It Belongs" - another really good song. yeah it might be simple and I could see why other people wouldn't like it. I like the feel. The phasing from distant/distorted to clear... the audience cheering doesn't really detract from it either

Wow.. I thought I liked the album more than when I actually broke all the songs down seperately. People really like to bash nine inch nails, which is too bad. It seems to be a very bad thing to claim to like industrial yet like nine inch nails nowadays. I got into nine inch nails in the mid/late 90's. It seems to be one of the "mall goth" choice bands now. Maybe that's a reason why people are against them. I still dig them. Maybe future releases will be better. - Sun, 24 Apr 2005 3:58pm

I'm loving the single, and I eagerly await the album, and I'm pretty sure it won't dissapoint me.

It wasn't Trent's hardcore side that attracted me in the first place, it was the synth pop side. Before I found NIN I think my tape collection consisted of an Erasure tape and a couple of Pet Shop Boys tapes. Nine Inch Nails pretty much opened the doors for me to be able to appreciate harder music.

Another thing I want to add is that just because someone is making 'pop' songs doesn't nessiscarily mean that they're selling out, or doing it solely to make big fat wads of cash... it might be a hard concept for some folks to grasp, but some people actually like straight forward catchy singable songs with good hooks.

I think he did this album to remove the pressure he put on himself by creating a masterpiece like The Downward Spiral. The Fragile was his attempt at topping himself, and although I think The Fragile is a brilliant album, it's nowhere TDS. So rather than going insane and desperately and fruitlessly trying over and over again to top his best, he's just doing something he knows he can do: write some good heavy industrial-pop tunes & have a good time at it.

So go Trent go!

EDIT

Ok, I've actually heard the full album now, and I don't know what to think. I know I like it, but it's weird. There's no way this is him trying to be mainstream, some of it is just too wierd. It sounds to me like it's Trent just doing his own thing and being all like "fuck the fans, if they don't like it they can make their own goddman music" (I think that's what the song 'Only' is about). Besides the single, theres really only a couple of radio friendly songs, the rest are just strange. It sounds very schizophrenic as a whole, but I like it. Go Trent! - Mon, 25 Apr 2005 9:38am

I really dig the production, especially on the drums. It's good for what it is. These songs are better than Metallica's post rehab crapola. - Fri, 29 Apr 2005 8:05am

i have the full album. the only song that is moderately not great is "Only" because of his goofy mall-goth rant in it. but still it isnt an unlistenable track. - Thu, 5 May 2005 12:48am

I'll buy it eventually too. I have most of his albums and I'm actually happy he's grown up. He said it himself - you can't stay angry forever - something has to happen, you either grow up or destroy yourself. I just laughed at him during his little angry-man period. Now he's continuing on his musical journey, trying new sounds and getting back to writing listenable music. Sounds like a plan to me. - Thu, 5 May 2005 9:16am

This album has been like a religious experience for me, it just keeps growing and growing on me. It's only been about 4 days, but I already feel like this album has been with me for years. I love every single track. There are lots of points where I shake my head & chuckle to myself while mumbling 'silly trent' under my breath, but it's all good. It's kind of refreshing to see that you're idols are big fucking dorks too. - Thu, 5 May 2005 1:04pm

Bought it (for only $9.99) on my lunch break the 1st day it came out (at Future Shop}. 1st song I didn't like at 1st; as it was mellow & repeated alot. After work I got stoned & listened to it through my x-box/tv/subwoofer/ surround sound system and it sounded kick ass - killer bass sounds -BEST ALBUM FROM START TO FINISH - SINCE DOWNWARD SPIRAL FOR 9" NAILS.
i LIKE how they mixed electronic drums, percussion & acoustic drums. the web site shows pics of recording with Dave Grohl playing the set; along with a bunch of other drummers - they had floor toms and snares individually miked along with cymbals by themselves for seperate miking. studio looked cool - lots of dif't cymbals and sets to use. As each song sounds dif't - unique drum beats and rhythms ---- which is how a good band should sound so there music doesn't sound all the same.
