blackmetal-
Clandestine Blaze (primitive blackmetal, slow at times)
Ildjarn (extremely raw noisy blackmetal)
Sorhin (fast blackmetal, no keyboards)
Sigh (any and all, keyboard heavy experimental blackmetal. Their very first- Scorn Defeat, and very last- Imaginary Sonicscapes are both amazing)
Ulver (technical and blindingly fast blackmetal, listen to Madrigal of the Night Sky)

grindcore- (shit, where to start ..)
Bodies Lay Broken
Unholy Grave
Disgorge (Mexico, the other Disgorges are shitty deathmetal)
Kill the Client
Quatro Stagioni

You should be able to find this stuff eventually if you put it in your wishlish on soulseek. - Sun, 20 Feb 2005 10:17pm

leviathan (kvlt)
kadaverficker (blackenedgrind?)

grindcore -
embalming theatre (brutal goregind)
fuck...i'm dead (drum machine kill-grind)
general surgery (raw goregrind)
excrementory grindfuckers (humourous german-grind)
watchmaker (crazy as alll fuck)

couldnt think of much bm. havent really been paying attentiont to much of it lately.

it should also be noted that Ulvers newer non-black metal material is really good, and diverse. - Sun, 20 Feb 2005 10:29pm

Fuck this shitty site....I wrote up a list and went to post it and got an error so now I have to write it out again...
Canon...I'm sure you can guess my recommendations...but you can argue with me if you like
BM:
Weakling-Dead as Dreams (atmospheric BM....some of the saddest sounding music I've heard

Fall of the Bastards- Dusk of an Ancient Age (epic melodic BM with occasional doom parts...raw but not muddy and under produced...I know you hate this)

Gorgoroth-Under the Sign of Hell & Antichrist (TNBM;0...their 2 best...essential listening)

Wolves in the Throneroom-demo (4 songs 45 minutes...a mix between weakling and FotB)

Grind:
Wasteoid-Total Pukeoid (wierd, noisy, beer soaked and fast as fuck)

Watchmaker-Kill.Fucking.Everyone (black/noise/grind...heavily layered and totally vicious....maybe the angriest band I've ever heard)

Birdflesh- Night of the Ultimate Mosh (amazingly executed humour grind....a meshing of many different styles....they pretend to be from Japan but they're not)

Putrescence-Mangled, Hollowed out and vomit filled (goregrind from winnipeg)

Fistfuck-23 songs in the same hole(ex dahmer....but even better....yeah I said it)

FLESH PARADE- KILL WHITEY (I can't believe you forgot this...especially now that they're back together) - Sun, 20 Feb 2005 11:24pm

fuck YES flesh parade.
fall of the bastards are mediocre at best.
wolves in the throneroom are too metalcore for me. birdflesh fucking rule. I'm seeing them this summer. mordock decided against it. what an asshole.
I stole that putrescence cd from mordock and it is totally fucking brutal.
watchmaker are emo.
wasteoid are great. great vocals.
gorgoroth lost me on the last album, but their old stuff is undeniable.
Fistfuck is NOT better than dahmer you fucking idiot.
weakling are worthy and grim. - Sun, 20 Feb 2005 11:58pm

Keep telling me Watchmaker are emo...it would totally bug me if it wasn't so utterly laughable.

I didn't decide against going to see Birdflesh at MDF...if I can afford it I'm going to go.

Twilight of the Idols is a subpar album but I don't hate it by any means...it has some good rock BM on it.

Do you even know what metalcore is?;) - Mon, 21 Feb 2005 2:39am

Gosh I feel so ignorant not knowing any of these bands. I'm sure I'm missing out. Putrescence vocalist Mike Alexander gave me the "Mangled..." cd last summer when his other band Head Hits Concrete played with Peruke in Van.
Favourite track - I think it's number 12 - "Agonizing Horrendous Gastrointestinal Elf Defilement"

Total btw here - talked to Jordan last night. His new band is apparently bm. I forgot their name. They're playing their first gig sometime around his birthday Apr. 23. Might do a road trip thingy for that with Silas, Lou and maybe some other reprobates like themselves.
News flash! Jesse is no longer in Tard! Nor the original guitarist. Jordan's already breaking in a new second guitarist. The Tard cd should be coming out soon - apparently quite the tribute to Canada's beloved icon - Terry Fox. - Mon, 21 Feb 2005 7:47am

I am to be labelled an old man for this comment, no doubt.
Black metal begins with Darkthrone - A Blaze In The Northern Sky and ends with Darkthrone - Under A Funeral Moon. Sure there are some other old bands out there with a good song or two (Burzum, Mayhem, etc...) but Darkthrone embodied all that was right with BM.
Lots of good grindcore out there but Brutal Truth - Extreme Conditions Demand Extreme Responses has everything. IMNSHO, THE grindcore example. Contrary to popular belief, grindcore is allowed to have slower, catchy passages.
Disagree all you like, but you know I'm right. - Tue, 22 Feb 2005 4:54pm

Anything in between Sigh's first and last is just as brilliant, Scott. One of my very few all time favorite bands.

Some bands I haven't seen being mentioned (normally I never care enough to reply to similar topics):

KVIST - ultimate black metal version of classical music. Sublime.

MYSTICUM

DøDHEIMSGARD

VED BUENS ENDE

GALGERAS - Fluisterwoud vocalist's solo project. My favorite Dutch poet and troubadour. This guy has a very distinct style of writing and playing guitar, beside his haunting old school symphonic keyboards and eeriest dungeonesque vocals. He also practices his own personal form of magic, something far, far deeper and darker than the standard "wicca and Lovecraft" that goth teens put in their interests on myspace.

SAMAEL - Though I think anything they released is superb, their debut album "Worship Him" almost seems like a blueprint for what was to come from Norway in the following years. Excellent black/doom

LUGUBRUM - Another personal favorite of mine, Belgium's rawest and sickest bunch of black metal farmers. Besides very original bm-riffing you'll hear bluegrass, jazz (including an alto-sax), Black Sabbath and old thrash. Keywords: carrots, manure, obscure agrarian deities, midgets, pointed beards, cajun, beer, flaggelation, Jeroen Bosch, outhouses, banjo, performing live while locked up in a dungeon, pet swines.

grindcore:

THE COUNTY MEDICAL EXAMINERS - Real life pathologists with an addiction to early Carcass material. Can't get Symphonies of Sickness out of your cd player? This is totally your thing. Their bass player is in his early sixties.

INHUME - Holland's best and most well-known grinders. Their live shows are a tornado of relentless and skilled 'core and thrashing bodies. They'd blow Victorians away should they ever play here. Oh let it come true. - Sun, 13 Mar 2005 12:59pm

I ordered Terror Propaganda. Again, can't wait. Bestial Warlust are ALWAYS good.

I bought the new Impaled. I have mixed feelings. Its pretty good but I think they are following exactly in Carcass' footsteps. Once they are on a bigger label (Century Media for Impaled and Sony for Carcass) their stuff becomes a little more watered down. They have continued to follow in their medical direction. Still good stuff, but now that Andrew LeBarre (sp?) is gone the new guy's vocals suck!! BUt it is still a good release, don't get me wrong, just not as good as the all mighty Mondo Medicale or Dementia Rex split. - Wed, 16 Mar 2005 2:06pm

ALL the brutal truth albums, Nik. You can say it.

OftenBongSoong I bought the Noothgrush/Corrupted split with glorious, glorious bonus tracks and it put to end my utter confusion about Corrupted having high vocals. No dice, the rip on the internet (the very common rip) is mislabeled, as is the CD.

BTW, if Noothgrush sounded any more like Grief, I might actually like it. As it stands right now, if that vocalist in Noothgrush ISN'T the guy from Grief then he has some serious explaining to do. - Mon, 28 Mar 2005 2:17am

Yeah - Fuck the Facts truly rip. They played with Peruke last year and we were so blown away by the awesomeness of their compositions. The lead vox was a bit of a self-righteous loser but the drummer - man - he had the wickedest blast beats, not to mention totally original beats as well. I heard that he's now with Exhumed. Their half of the split with Sargeant Slaughter is rather "splunge".
I would have to give the nod to the first two Brutal Truth albums, as opposed to the latter two. The production was more boffo on the first two, though "...Animal Kingdom" was pretty spiffy, I have to say. "Kill Trend Suicide" just didn't do it for me. Saskatoon Shawn (r.i.p.) and I had arguments about this way back.
And the lovely Hemdale - their bassist SO RULED. Reminded me of a brunette version of Bobby from "King of the Hill" - very Pillsbury Doughboy-ish. Maybe my favourite all-time grind vocalist - his range was fucking unbelieveable, from the sickest, drano-lubricated wailing to the lowest, bowel-wrenching gurgling. Too beautiful.

Just discovered these guys, check them out...

ZOMBIE RITUAL - Pure zombie goregrind from Japan. Signed to Razorback Records. (www.razorbackrecords.com)

GIGANTIC BRAIN - Hilariously fast grindcore/crust with a sci-fi edge. The drum machine driven beats are just fuckin funny. Despite the lack of seriousness these guys have, their sound tends to be quite diverse. Definitely worth a listen.

ROMPERPROP - How could you not like a band that has an album called "Hellcock's Porn Flakes". These guys got some pretty catchy/groovy beats with overly guttural vocals. Sort of like COCK AND BALL TORTURE but with a sense of humor.

CUNTGRINDER - Not too shabby. Goregrind with total Slayer worship. Love the album cover for "Reign Is Continued".

EXULCERATE - Good gory shit! Nice and tight and brutal as fuck!
