Harbour authority CEO Michael Cormier defended the increases as necessary to cover costs faced by the non-profit organization to clean and maintain the causeway.$950 licence fee proposed for jugglers, up from $10 charged by the city last year. Buskers could see their licences jump to $200 from $10, while 20 artists who paid $500 a year for the right to exhibit their works on the causeway face a bill of $950 this year, with further increases planned in future years.

But Cormier has indicated that fees for jugglers and buskers are still being reviewed.

The authority will explain its actions, proposed to take effect in May, at a public meeting this Friday from 3 to 4 p.m. at the James Bay New Horizons Seniors Centre, 234 Menzies St. - Mon, 7 Feb 2005 9:37pm

In my 10 years of busking all over N America, I have never bought a permit and have never received a ticket.

I have been kicked off the harbour though. Thank god - what a hell hole. - Tue, 8 Feb 2005 11:25am

Yeah I,d say so.When someone waits all fucking day to play at the causeway who is licensed, and some shitlick with NO license sits there with spoons and whistles "The Andy Griffith" theme and doesn,t wanna move....,another dilema. You show them your license and they say "well I was here first" I don, have to move kinda shit,it pretty much means buddy will be at Royal Jubilee in 5 or less right? Commissionaires when they are gone after 9PM, it,s go to the cops? Homey don,t call the feds.So now you got some guy who is seriuosly looking at a dentist appointment in the very near future because of his mouth etc.Cops don,t do dick and either does the commissionaires after 9PM.I think they are hiking it to clean it up.I,m talking to Mc Cormier and getting some info soon.$200 is way too much...We are seeing if they,ll raise it just a bit to keep the scum of pond from taking local spots and audition everyone which will clean it up a bit for this year and set up some meetings soon to discuss all of this. - Thu, 10 Feb 2005 2:34pm

AUDITIONS?!? What the hell is that? We are supposed to be confined to the opinions of merely a few people to decide wheather or not we should be allowed to busk? What if they don't like your style of music or they just plain old don't like you....I can understand if they want to raise the prices a bit (NOT THAT MUCH) but I think the idea of auditions is total bull! - Sat, 12 Feb 2005 10:27pm

Meh, I think that if you're going to have a licensing system, auditions are *not* a bad idea. Most places I've been that require an audition don't discriminate against genre - just skill.

I guess you can look at it from the standpoint of business (making money) or art (playing to the public.) I often choose to play in places that are not $ makers, but which provide nice sound or an esthetically pleasing location. For the Accordion, fer example, I like Trounce Alley although I think in all the times I've played there, I've maybe totalled three bux.

If you're doing it to make money, then you should be legit about it. - Tue, 15 Feb 2005 6:29pm
