First live gig I saw was No Means No at La Hacienda which was a bar that used to be in Market Square before Sweetwaters and whatever that place is called now.

I snuck in through a window in the square along with some mouthy drunk lady because I was underage and spent most of the time inside the bar hiding under a table because I was afraid that the bouncer at the time Bruno was going to kick my ass (he had already refused me at the door twice that night). Not sure the year but probably 1985 or 1986. - Tue, 4 Jan 2005 8:53am

but my first REAL show would have been feb or jan of 02 or 03 i think. it was a 4 bands for 4 bucks show at pandora projects, yeknob, the staggers, micky christ and the mcguillicuddys headlined. to this day it was one of the best shows ive been to. the whole show was like an hour late though cause the first band (yeknob) had to put up there fucking like foot long mohawks before they could play. haha - Tue, 4 Jan 2005 1:21pm

I went to lots of "gigs" early on, but first "concert" I recall was Siouxsie @ UBC circa '85/'86 methinks. Had tix for Alice Cooper at Memorial too, but regretfully sold them. All my friends who saw that show were stained bright orange from all the fake blood :) - Tue, 4 Jan 2005 1:44pm

its been so long its hard to recall, but i think my first "real" show was SNFU at the Commodore, jan '91 or '92, the Wrong Turn Down Memmory Lane Tour with Gorilla Gorilla (bif naked) and someone else...this show has stood up to be the BEST handsdown i've yet to see..and which all live shows since haven't come close to. Thankfully I saw SNFU just at the end of their prime, i was underage, got past the bouncers with a buddys interm DL, was right up front the whole time to witness Chi in all his glory and stage props..and sang in many a chorus as he passed the mic to me and others up front to sing along... - Wed, 5 Jan 2005 6:29am

First big concert was the Pink Floyd Division Bell tour at GM place. 1993? I had bought a stolen ticket that the original owner had been able to replace so when I got to the designated seat their was already a guy there with the exact same ticket as me. We sorted out how the whole thing happened and I had to float around hanging out on the stairs. Staff would come and tell me to go back to my seat but I would just say that my seat was no where near my freinds and wandered around until I would be told by someone else to go to my seat. I managed to see the whole show though. Plus I smoked myself straight for the first time!! - Wed, 5 Jan 2005 10:38pm

Dire Sraits was at Memorial Live in 85 during the Brothers in arms tour, Bros in arms is now the biggest selling cd of all time.I was shocked that they came to our humble Memorial arena.

Also saw them the next night in Van.1985 Dire straits in Rome during the Making Movies tour 1981.

Alice Cooper fell out of a giant toy box, had to leave the stage, thought it was part of the show. Alice came back out all bandaged up around the ribs singing only women bleed,
sadly he had to cut the show short to go to the hospital.
Suzi Quatro backed him up and came back on when he couldn't continue. Yes Suzi Quatro!!

Any other concert moments?????

Someone else mentioned them too. My first show was The Headpins, in Fredericton, New Brunswick of all places. Prolly 1983-84. I think Red Rider opened.

It would be another 10 years until I actually started using any drugs, but I remember one guy who said (We were in the nose-bleeds), "Breath deep son, while its FREE!"
I still use that line whenever I smell weed burning somewhere...

The first gig I ever saw, period, was Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show at Memorial Arena, but I was taken by a pal for his birthday, otherwise I would have given it a pass. the first gig I went out of my way to go see was Kraftwerk in 1975 at the Gardens in Vancouver. They were touring the "Autobahn" album and each band member had his name written in neon light in a plexiglas box in front of him. The keyboards were tilted up so you could see their fingers and the light show was a bank of coloured flourescent lights that were in an arc behind them. The two percussionists had marimba mallets with curly cords coming out of them. They played the whole Autobahn album and most of the "Ralf and Florian" album. I recently found a bootleg of that tour which reminded me of the endless pauses between songs while they re-programmed their old analog synths to the accompaniment of the sound of all the phase shifters buzzing away. Very weird. - Sun, 9 Jan 2005 12:43pm

Too funny Scott (Zippgunn). That Dr. Hook gig was my first show too! My parents took me and my little sister and all I can remember was the keyboard player singing a song and then dangling the mic between his legs like a cock during the lead, while chicks in the front gave it head. It was pretty embarassing having that going down (ahem) while sitting there with your parents. The first big shows I went to on my own were the Ramones at the Commodore and the Clash at the Pacific Colloseum. The Ramones were so fucking loud that the first few songs were barely discernable noise till my ears got numb. The Clash were unbelievable. Religeous experiences. - Mon, 10 Jan 2005 10:10am

Beatlemania, if you can call what was essentially a musical a concert, 81 or 82. If that doesn't qualify it would be Rush, Signals tour in '83? Like jenko my third is worth a mention for it's weird factor: Stevie Ray Vaugn opening for Men at Work '83? in Edmonton (not unlike Hendrix opening for The Monkeys). Bowie is somewhere in '83, however unfortunate brain damage acrued during the pre-event festivities makes it impossible to recall the exact date. - Thu, 13 Jan 2005 12:51pm

Hey Salmon Queen , I remember that Bay City Rollers tour coming through just when they were peaking, the girls at my school were going crazy about it . I was listening to Zep, Sabbath, Floyd, Yes etc. I thought it was funny as hell to see all the tartan clothes and scarves at school !
But here's the kicker a couple of years ago I get this E-mail from a dude who I guess saw my name on a metal message board and was talking about how much his wife loved death metal . He says " Hey, I played for this band years ago , maybe you've heard of them The Bay City Rollers ?" , fuck yea I've heard of them ! It was Woody , we talked a few times on line and played some dumb tricks on his wife’s web site ( a site for woody), crazy who you might meet on line ! - Thu, 13 Jan 2005 2:24pm

XY-SATAN: In our gr. 6 class ('76) luckily there were only two girls doing the tartan thing. They were razzed to shit.
My all-time favourite tabloid blurb: from the cover of a special 'feel sorry for us' edition of Teen Beat(?) on the Bay City Rollers, there's a small photo of either Woody or Eric looking despondently at us and underneath it says "I Look Ugly".

Oh - sorry - first band?

Well, first "major" gig (however the heck one defines that): XTC, Uvic Centre, '79.

/Young Canadians backed them up, with their 'groundbreakingly' profane anthem "Let's Go to Fuckin' Ha-wai-i." - Fri, 14 Jan 2005 1:17pm

I'm still a straight-up double bacon cheeseburger with avocado, tomatoes, and red onions, myself. If I did have kids I was hoping that their first concert would have been Flipper, which is so impossible now, so I'm at a total loss now what else there is. - Sun, 16 Jan 2005 2:09pm

LMFAO !! Hey for a old fuck he ain't doing to bad !

Feel....un....contol...able....urge...must ...fight ....thinking.... of.. the.. song "Do you think I'm sexy" !!!!!!

Na na na na na, nananananananar, nananananananar,
Heh, Baby
Na na na na na, nananananananar, nananananananar,
Oh, No,

She sits alone waiting for suggestions
He's so nervous avoiding all the questions
His lips are dry, her heart is gently pounding
Don't you just know exactly what they're thinking

[Chorus A]
If you want my body and you think I'm sexy
come on sugar let me know.
If you really need me just reach out and touch me
come on honey tell me so
(Tell me so baby)
Na na na na na, nananananananar, nananananananar,
Heh, Baby
Na na na na na, nananananananar, nananananananar,

He's acting shy looking for an answer
Come on honey let's spend the night together
Now hold on a minute before we go much further
Give me a dime so I can phone my mother
They catch a cab to his high rise apartment
At last he can tell her exactly what his heart means

[Chorus B]
If you want my body and you think I'm sexy
come on honey tell me so
If you really need me just reach out and touch me
come on sugar let me know.
(Tell me so baby)
Na na na na na, nananananananar, nananananananar,
Na na na na na, nananananananar, nananananananar,

His heart's beating like a drum
'cos at last he's got this girl home
Relax baby now we are alone

Heh Baby!

If you want my body and you think I'm sexy
come on let me know (let me know let me know)
Na na na na na, nananananananar, nananananananar,
Na na na na na, nananananananar, nananananananar,

If you think I'm sexy, and just reach and touch me
come on sugar let me know
(nananananananar)
Na na na na na, nananananananar, nananananananar,

[Repeat Chorus A]

My first real concert "experience" was after seeing 2liveCrew & Ton Loc, it was Lollapalooza 93. Earlier on in the show I decided to buy some pot and sit with a few of my friends. Unfortunately the pot was cut with something strange and adverse to my not so tolerant 15 year old physiological condition, and I ended up getting really incapably high in addition to getting a bad case of sunstroke. It was at this point that my skin started to turn green and I swaggered around for a while looking for a concession stand. I eventually found a Pepsi merchant (one of dozens which is quite a few for an “alternative” and “political” music festival) and bought one of their gigantic maga-savings trash can sized cups of pop for about $11.00 and drank the whole thing really quickly. Though I felt better for about thirty seconds I started feeling even more nauseous and threw up all of it back into the cup. I then proceeded to replace the cap and crawl a few feet away into some shade. A minute later a scruffy hippie guy wandered nearby when I noticed him picking up the regurgitated Pepsi and started to drink it without any hesitation and walked away sipping the drink every few steps. After that I felt a little better. Beyond that the show was okay - Thu, 3 Feb 2005 9:46am
