Girls With Guns

Last night: Che Chapter 127, Splatter, sowhatnothing, Sanne Lambert @ Pub 340, Friday, September 24.

AND TONIGHT (Saturday) September 25th 9 PM - 2 AM
@ Pub 340 (http://www.pub340.com )
Night Creature Productions presents: http://www.GirlswithGuns.ca with Blind Driver, FACES of BLACK, Autoviolet

Last night Connie Meyer from the band Splatter spent her birthday playing the first night of a 2-night benefit she organized, found sponsors to support, and promoted in aid of the DTES Women's Shelter. Its called Girls with Guns and featured all female fronted bands.

The cover was $7 and the doorguy (CAN't remember his name, damn!) said that about 75-80 percent of the crowd seemed interested and HAPPY to pay cover once they heard what the cause was. The bar (Pub 340) was psyched about hosting the event, and were proud and excited, saying they did way better than your average Friday night. I heard the doorguy taking the time to explain to people what kinds of things their money would be going towards. I saw people come in, pay their $$, and leave after a couple minutes since they were on their way somewhere else. And Pierre from Night Creature was totally stoked about how $800 will be going to the shelter, from this first night alone.

Che: Chapter 127 saw fit to support this cause and headline the show, helping to lend further credibility to this event. I'd recommend to anyone to at least look into and consider what this band stands for. (http://www.chechapter127.com see "manifesto")

In conclusion, this is what Connie's response was in another thread:

"The Downtown Eastside Women's Centre has been facing a lot of cutbacks from the government. It made sense for us to team up with them as it is women helping women. They provide the downtown eastside women with a drop in centre, recreation, self help and resources. Overall they provide basic needs and work to make things better for women on the downtown eastside. What funds we come up with from the show will help replenish what was lost from the cutbacks. Their site is http://www.dewc.ca if you want more information."

Happy Birthday Connie! Looks like you gave yourself and a whole bunch of others a pretty awesome present. Thank you for inviting us all to your party and see you there again tonight!

Wow what a great show. We raised $1400 for the DOwntown Eastside Women's Centre for both nights. What a great success. Looks like this will be a yearly event as Pierre and I have decided to do it again next year. Next year though, I want to get an actual MC to introduce the bands because I suck at it and it is too much to do with everything else. As well I want to recruit a volunteer crew, make it BIGGER FASTER Better

Sati thanks so much for all your help in all of this!!!!When you get T-Shirts for livemusicvancouver let me know.

Fri Sept 24: Happy Birthday to Me. What a great night. The Province gave this show coverage and printed a photo. Cheers to Stuart Derdeyn for helping us out with that.

Sanne Lambert opened up the night with her catchy brand of PJ Harvey/Patti Smith style of music...except no whining with Sanne. Next up was So What Nothing who have been featured on CFOX's Rock Report. Understandably so, their catchy style of Heavy Sexy Dirty Rock entranced the audience.

Splatter, cant really say much here, would be biased right?, but had a wicked time.

Che Chapter 127 ended off the night with genuine fury and angst. Meegan is a wicked frontwoman and carries herself well on stage. She definitely knows how to rile the audience up and get them participating. And the band is wickedly tight. Great job, and as I said it was an honor to share the stage with them.

Saturday Sept 25

Autoviolet opened the night up and have really tightened up since the last time I saw them. Pascale has a great strong voice and was captivating on stage. Electronica infused rock with samples, soaring female vocals on top. I am expecting to see this relatively new act do great things over the next year.

Faces of Black......Our Victoria Import for the night.I love this band. Infectious grooves kind of reminds me a bit of Soundgarden mixed with Rush but much much heavier with a powerful lady leading you down the path of destuction, denial and turbulation. Intense, Brooding, Psychotic. So much raw emotion. So heavy and groovy. Check these guys out if you ever get a chance.

Blind Driver, wow, lets just say I won't be renewing my license this year. Their singer is ferocious and the band has great energy on stage. Wicked band and awesome musicianship. The give a great performance and are such a wild band to watch. Bottom line........Stay off the Road and get the hell out of the way.....Blind Driver will blow you away.

If anyone else has any reviews of this show please post. Thanks to all the bands, the sponsors and all who came out and supported the cause. See you next year. - Sun, 26 Sep 2004 2:06pm

Just got back from Van.... Connie summed it all up. This event was well organized, well promoted, and well responded to. Just wish we could have been there for the first night of bands. The turnout was pretty good. Highlights for the night: Autoviolet and their front lady. You should check them out. If you're into gadgets and puter samples this band is definately for you. Blind Driver and their crazy fan, Crusty. We were greatly amused by his spastic antics. Jumping! Rolling, stage jumping. Where can we find a fan like him? Oh yeah, and Adena (singer of Blind Driver) cracks the whip and really puts on an energetic ballsy show. We had an amazing time. 1400 bux to a great cause. Can't wait til next year. c. - Sun, 26 Sep 2004 6:57pm
