Busy downtown bar with very popular established live music venue seeks fresh meat. We are going to be holding auditions on monday nights. The Monday night performance will be unpaid but will accompany a small bar tab. The audtions will be held for openings in our 2011 schedule.

Qualifications:
Musicians should be experienced in live performance, able to conduct themselves in a professional manner, have own sound system and equipment, reliable, punctual and able to commit to dates throughout the year. Added bonus if you have a following and perform your own marketing. If you do not meet these qualifications please do not reply to this thread.

So are you saying that this single monday night audition is unpaid or that whoever gets the gig will also then be playing unpaid gigs but will have a small bar tab for their trouble? - Mon, 15 Nov 2010 11:07am

I'm assuming he's saying that the Monday night position will be unpaid.

As usual, it is the band that must comport themselves as professionals, but will not be treated as professionals by the venue.

Tell me, what is the value to your establishment to bring in a band, if they will not even add enough to your bottom line that you can give them even a small cut of that boon?

do you just enjoy watching a local band play for your amusement, and then getting them drunk off cheap beer? If that's the case, then I'm sure there's a lot of teen pop-rock bands that will gladly play in your living room for the contents of your liquor cabinet.

I'm sure you'll find some band to fill the other end of this ridiculous arrangement, but please note that there are many other excellent bands that will not bother contacting you, because this sort of thing continues to be an insult to the hard working musicians of this city. - Mon, 15 Nov 2010 5:18pm

Well now, let's not jump to conclusions without thinking things through .. it might not be that bad a deal. Let's recap:

CONS:

- The band will receive NO money, however it MAY get some beer, but no guarantees.
- The band also gets to provide their own sound system .. because a busy downtown bar wouldn't have one of those.
- The band can also assume they will need to bring their own sound person (also unpaid, unless by the band).
- The band basically has to commit their time and hard-earned resources into doing a thankless job for this unappreciative and miserly establishment, with the promise of no material reward whatsoever.

PROS:

- The band gets the opportunity to play regularly in a self-described "busy downtown bar", which sounds like it might be good for exposure.. oh except that the unpaid band should really already have a following.. in order to fill this "busy" place with paying customers who wouldn't be there if not for the band in the first place. So I guess this really goes in the CONS list, too.

What the hell is this place, Sopranos? - Tue, 16 Nov 2010 9:04am Edited: Tue, 16 Nov 2010 9:07am

Pretty sure Sopranos has a sound system..

Also the way I read it only the first 'audition' goes unpaid. It makes no mention of compensation one way or the other for subsequent gigs. - Tue, 16 Nov 2010 9:51am Edited: Tue, 16 Nov 2010 9:51am

You may be right .. I guess it depends on whether "The Monday night performance" refers only to the auditions or to the subsequent slots.. is it an audition or a performance?

Perhaps this was a knee-jerk reaction to an ambiguously worded ad.. seems to be the trend in Victoria that bands get the shaft in these types of arrangements.. - Tue, 16 Nov 2010 12:09pm

If I read it correctly, there are to be several monday nights of auditions where the bar looks for a new resident band(s). These auditions wont be paid but whatever band that gets hired on will be once the actual showcase nights get going. I'm guessing this is for Darcy's Pub looking for a cover band...but could be totally out to lunch. The only thing that confuses me is if its a 'very popular established live music venue' why dont they atleast have their own PA?? Sound system cant be referring to amps... - Tue, 16 Nov 2010 3:17pm

I can't think of any "busy downtown bar with very popular live music venue" that doesn't have their own sound system. Even slow out of town bars that have been known to have occaisional shows usually have their own. Even the Cambie has a PA... Wonder what this venue is...
This sounds like one of those things where they'll get a band to play for free every Monday night for as long as they can get away with. Like casting couch pornos. Could be good fun for a new band though. - Thu, 18 Nov 2010 11:23am Edited: Thu, 18 Nov 2010 11:23am

Bring your own PA, do all the promo and play for free on a Monday night? What serious professional band could pass up a once in a lifetime opportunity like this? This sounds like a venue that's really committed to making this a success. - Thu, 18 Nov 2010 10:03pm

Wow....also it mentions "Mondays". So auditions will go on for awhile thus the bar gets free bands on Monday's from now until the end of the year (Christmas Season)? Wouldn't waste my time on this either. Seems like a struggling little bar that wants free entertainment. Stay away! - Sat, 20 Nov 2010 10:50pm

I have a much better idea..........how about we can become the resident band and pay the bar to play? Fill it with all our friends and followers who will pay double price for all drinks!! - Thu, 2 Dec 2010 12:49pm
