Well I was trying to have serious discussion about this.I was watching Much Loud(not the best reference,I know) and the music that they call "Loud" seems to be extremely varied between light stuff and heavy stuff. What's your opinion on this? - Mon, 27 Sep 2010 8:53am

ahhh sorry.... but if you really take into consideration the production that went into the ToTo song it is pretty heavy... but we all have different tastes... This message board is great and we get to share our musical finds. In the old days i would take the buss downtown and go to the record stores and all-age gigs and meet other like minded people... and then we would share a mixed tape! Now here we are on the internet and the face to face music enthusiast contact is non exhistant. If you where to meet me and see my facial expressions when i told you that ToTo was heavy you would laugh. humor and sarcasm is fun and healthy... thus Rule 62.... anyway in regards to HEAVY lets get serious... here's a message link i started awhile back. some of the youtubes are HEAVY!!! cheers to you all

love- Ricky JaK

It's pretty old at this point and a lot of stuff has changed but that's our latest recording.Mostly our influences come from everywhere but we listen to a lot of kyuss, our drummer specifically, myself it's queens of the stone age,and our other guitarist loves hardcore superstar.our bassist listens to just about everything so it's an eclectic mix of stuff.i do a lot of the writing though. - Tue, 28 Sep 2010 7:18pm Edited: Tue, 28 Sep 2010 7:39pm

i didn't say we were comparing ourselves to kyuss.i said we were as heavy. not saying musically we are the same as a lot of other influences come into our band.but no matter what i say you'll find some way to twist it or manipulate it to whatever you want, then you'll make some unintelligent comment where you spell things wrong and make no point.

Necrophagist IMO is definitely heavy. What i'm looking for is what would be the lightest music you'd still consider to be heavy.black metal/death metal aside, what's the lightest band you'd still consider worthy of being called heavy? Metallica?Stone Sour?Avenged Sevenfold? - Fri, 1 Oct 2010 3:41pm

That 'Gimme a kiss' song on your myspace is/could be pretty heavy. I think if that was cleaned up a bit the usual suspects might cut back on the negativity a bit..

Metal bands aside, I would have to vote for John Zorn (check out the Naked City track that I have attached)... I saw him perform with Electric Masada a few years ago in Belgium, which was amazing. I think you guys are fairly heavy(sons of nova? sp?)... though my only feedback I could give is maybe put more focus on your vocal melodies; I know its hard to play and sing at the same time(and being unique all while doing this)... I dont mean this in a negative way; I think your rhythm is good but the vocals could use a little more work.(im not saying you have a bad voice, just use it differently... have you taken vocal lessons? breathing technique? if not, you should think about it... it'll help a ton!) - Sat, 2 Oct 2010 1:21pm

holy crap,i think that's the first time someone didn't just rip on us for no good reason. thanks for the CONSTRUCTIVE criticism. those demos are kinda old at this point though and to make matters worse,my recording program went to shit right after we got some rough vocal takes done, so i couldn't go back and edit or redo them. we are planning on doing something more formal soon but we didn't think it was worth the hassle to re-record stuff we aren't gonna use in a couple months anyway. but you're right ,no excuses. if anyone wants to see us live though we are playing the V Lounge on October 15th.to all who've never seen us come and see us,i dare you.you won't be talking shit about us after you do i can tell you that. - Sat, 2 Oct 2010 1:37pm

Omaha: saw Zorn with Naked City in San Fran back in '90. Crazy world tour - just three cities (NY, SF, and Tokyo). No Yamatsuka Eye, so whenever there was a vocal part, Zorn would put his sax aside, grab a mic resting on a cushion on a stool next to him, look heavenward, and belt it out almost as crazily as Y.E. would. You could tell he was from NY by the way he bested any heckler (with a smile). It was one of the most inspirational mindfuck exhibitions of heaviness I've ever seen, and I've seen my share.

CV: if you like it technical, with absolutely squirrel-flattening brutality, then give this a whirl:

I'll grant that my Origin example didn't display enough of the guitar pyrotechics that is prevalent in most of their tunes, but here's a bunch of bands that are so flat-out NON-HEAVY (that some have the ignorant nerve to consider otherwise) (insultingly boring "rawk", basically):

Type O Negative
already mentioned: Kyuss, Avenge Sevenfold
Pantera
Amorphis
Fu Manchu
Bongzilla

Barbara Walters, of 20/20, did a story on gender roles in Kabul Afghanistan , several years before the Afghan war. She noted that
women customarily walked five paces behind their husbands.
She recently returned to Kabul and observed that women still walk behind their husbands. Despite the overthrow of the oppressive Taliban regime, the women are happy to maintain the old custom.
Ms. Walters approached one of the Afghani women and asked, 'Why do you now seem happy with an old custom that you once tried so desperately to change?'
The woman looked Ms. Walters straight in the eyes, and without hesitation said, 'Land Mines.' - Wed, 13 Oct 2010 10:08pm

I've never heard of S.O.N., and I have no excuse to not come see you live on the 15th as I currently live down the street from those Palm trees. I would have to say that that first song in your player was not my cup of pee, but the other tracks were very promising and i would assume they are probably pulled off heavier Live. I noticed you thanked some "CONSTRUCTIVE criticism" above, so I will add, I would personally suggest a overhaul on the astetics of your myspace, had you not been a victoria band, i honestly probably wouldn't have pressed play, no offence ntended just being honest, not that it needs to have gouls N goblins or other sterotypical HEAVY METAL shit, just that there are thosands of bands to listen to in a lifetime, and thousands of them poping up everyday since Future Shop carries GEEtars, you got to have something to set yourselves apart, unless you're sponsored by those Brands I'd ditch the big Logos for one. Stoked to hear future recordings from you guys!!

Stoked about the NAKED CITY response! in my opinon Painkiller is probably Zorns heaviest offering: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SJzhI7bIDOc

On the "HEAVY" topic, it really comes down to what comes to one's mind when the word Heavy is said.. to me it's TONE, but it could mean lyrics or how god damn epic Toto is, or how completely fucked up in general a band is like Autopsy, Replusion, Orgin ect. For me it's the TONE of the guitars, the deepness of the drums and shit like that.

I saw Sunn O)) once and I have to say I've NEVER felt my Lungs rumble in my chest like that before in my life. HEEEAAAVVVYYY.

And as far as Heavy in this town (active), at least for tone and live performance I would have say,
Nomad : http://www.myspace.com/highassembly
Shadowrun: http://www.myspace.com/shadowrundoom

Stoned Eyes & Mendozza from Van are fucking heavy live too oh! and Haggatha: http://www.myspace.com/haggathaband

some other bands I think r "heavy":
SAINT VITUS
ELECTRIC WIZARD & RAMESSES
HOODED MENACE
GODFLESH
REVENGE
NADJA
WINTER
MOSS
I could go on... things are heavy all around...
speaking of MOSS check out NIGHTFUCKER from vancouver, it's got a member from MOSS in it:

we are sponsored by sparrow, albeit a shitty sponsorship but we are.and i use fender and peavey.yeah the songs are heavier live and we've changed stuff, you should come down and check us out. we are debuting two new songs this friday to promote our upcoming recording.the first song on our myspace is more studio only type stuff that we wouldn't be playing live, we like to genre bend a bit.right now i'm just posting some of our rough demos, we'll have something a little more formal shortly, recording next sunday.we've had some speed bumps in the past as we used to be a 5 piece but let our singer go due to creative differences. neither of us had really sung before in bands so it's a learning curve - Thu, 14 Oct 2010 4:08am Edited: Thu, 14 Oct 2010 4:09am
