I have no real opinion of Talk's Cheap, having not yet been there.

Good friend of mine has been trouble getting them when they're open, so as much as I know about them is that they have awkward hours.

But for Rifflandia to post this on their official facebook page is VERY unprofessional. Who knows what TC's reasoning is? From what I know they sell a lot of punk/hardcore/underground stuff, not exactly a genre well represented by Rifflandia, so it's really no mystery why they wouldn't want to be associated.

Shame, Rifflandia! - Wed, 22 Sep 2010 4:11pm

Awkward Hours? Talk's Cheap is open Wednesday 11Am - 5PM, Thursday 11Am - 5PM, Friday 11Am - 9PM (record party every week from 7PM to 9PM), Saturday from 11Am to 5PM and Sunday from 11Am - 5PM. I'm not open on Mondays or Tuesdays.

I didn't think declining to distribute their festival program would bother Rifflandia, as they have dozens of other outlets...but whatever. I don't know...there's not a single band on Rifflandia (that hasn't played here in the past 3 months or is 30 years past their prime) that I would pay to see or carry their releases in my store...why would I bother helping distribute their programs? I figure there's enough money tied up in advertising already that everyone who'd give a shit, already knows about the festival. They don't need my help...do they? - Wed, 22 Sep 2010 9:27pm

That's a pretty slimey move by Rifflandia. That said though, they do have some great bands coming. - Thu, 23 Sep 2010 7:45am

Talk's Cheap,

I believe I am the good friend who complained to Sam about your hours. I think what happened was I drove down from North Saanich on a whim to buy some vinyl on a monday.. and you were closed.. .. my bad and I didnt check your hours beyond being closed that monday and drove back down on tuesday only to be greeted by a 'closed' sign. Now I know and have embedded your hours in my brain so I dont make that mistake again.

no publicity is bad publicity. except in the case of LTR.

I don't think Run Like Hell has played in Victoria in the last three months and we may be 10 years past our prime individually, but we have only been a band for 5 years or so.

Vinyl is obsolete. - Thu, 23 Sep 2010 4:23pm

Shame what had to happen, I'm no organizer so I should keep my mouth shut over the Talk's Cheap mess, what I can say is that Rifflandia happens for a few days (it's a good idea, but some venues refuse to support Rifflandia, do they know what there doing?), Talk's Cheap is open year round, I'd rather support Talk's Cheap in any case, plus you get killer deals on music there and they support local bands. :) Always support your local talent!!! (yeah I know, and I'm bitching about the festival that supports local bands, I just hope it's good PR for the bands).

Also, I think they got pissy with Talk's Cheap cause TC wouldn't distribute Rifflandia's propaganda (something to do with recycling cause hardly anyone would grab a festival guide at the store). Strange too cause I could get said propaganda at a store in Fan Tan alley, not even a block away. - Thu, 23 Sep 2010 6:23pm Edited: Thu, 23 Sep 2010 7:14pm

Although my band is playing Rifflandia tonight, I do get the sense that it's become somewhat of a monster that can be a bully. I don't think this is due to the founders of the festival, but the size and spread of it allows it to take on a life of it's own.

I had some difficulties today with passes and got it straightened out with blunt force of the mouth and brain right quick. I also ended up walking into the venue at load-in and revising the organization of the stored equipment. A little disjointed to say the least. But there is something to be said for a festival that sells out their passes each year. - Thu, 23 Sep 2010 7:25pm

Does anybody actually think Rifflandia/ Atomique supports local music? They have a small group (Jets Overhead, Racoons, Jon and Roy, etc) they use regularly, then offer the shit slots to others, zero pay and take 15% of their merch sales.
I don't know anyone who actually bought a wristband. I see a lot of free ones, but I can't be bothered to stand outside venues, in the rain, because it filled up hours before the start.
Good on Talks Cheap for taking a stand. Whether you agree with him or not, nobody would have even known about this if Rifflandia hadn't made that post. - Fri, 24 Sep 2010 1:40pm

want it rifflandia last year that made that whole stink about not wanting to book the same local bands to their festival.. they wanted to keep it fresh and always showcase different local bands.. what happened there? - Sat, 25 Sep 2010 11:47am

Known bands sell tickets, local bands don't sell shit (honestly it bugs me, I'm sorry), go figure. Rifflandia is a business, and for a business to survive they have to sell product. I bitch about this shit all the time, and I know I ruffle a few feathers when I'm griping about shit I don't have the time to support or even have a clue what I'm talking about. *shrug*

I heard a couple tales a few days ago, interesting but sad to hear. Perhaps I should quit bitching and organize a GriphFest or something. ;) BTW: Jets Overhead are a known band, thanks to the Bridges CD, BTW: I own a copy, why don't you? :) - Sun, 26 Sep 2010 2:07am Edited: Sun, 26 Sep 2010 2:32am

"Known bands sell tickets, local bands don't sell shit (honestly it bugs me, I'm sorry), go figure."

-are you sure about that Griph? Cuz some local bands have no problems packing a show... So there's a little leg work involved selling your own tickets(and it can be a pain in the ass too); at the end of the day, you sell all your tickets you've done your end. Its not the venue or the audiences fault if its not sold out...
The idea, at least to me, behind Rifflandia is not to see the band you really wanted to see all year and get this one chance at rifflandia... the idea is to see a whole slew of bands you wouldn't normally see. Because people go to rifflandia to see a specific act, there's always going to be disappointment. I think that's where alot of negativety comes from for Rifflandia. Personally, Id rather see each of those bands individually to where I can support them directly by buying merch. or ticket sales. - Sun, 26 Sep 2010 10:10am

*nod* oh probably. I should better explain myself. I'm not saying that local bands won't bring people in, cause they usually do. Just that I guess that known names bring in people. - Sun, 26 Sep 2010 12:28pm Edited: Sun, 26 Sep 2010 12:33pm

To be a sell-out you need to experience success and profit. I have yet to see any of that.

Rifflandia is focused on bands that are geared more towards the indie and eclectic side of music. They have the punk, rock and metal bands there for people who get free wristbands and want to see the music they prefer.

Our show was not capacity by any means and the crowd were indifferent at times, but I made it very enjoyable by getting drunk on a Thursday. - Sun, 26 Sep 2010 2:26pm

sell out? I think you might've mis-understood what we were saying by selling out... I meant selling out a show lol not your image :P

I totally support the festival*(despite its bad press) and any festival for taht matter, its all about hearing new bands that are in a genre you like(rifflandia happens to be more indie stuff, but it would be nice to get more alt/hard rock maybe? not necessarily straight METAL; it would be awesome if my band could take part in the next one! The shows look/sound like alot of fun*(even if you have to get drunk on a thursday ;) ) - Sun, 26 Sep 2010 3:15pm

Don't get me wrong, I support the festival too, I just wonder about what took place. In any case, it gave Talk's Cheap some free PR, which is a good thing. - Sat, 2 Oct 2010 2:16am
