a lot of bands use the same formula to makes songs becuase they know it works and they can get money for doing it.. theres a profit to be had in being a professional musician. u want substance listen to bands that are indepenent and that dont want to appeal to certain demographics. if u dont like what u hear dont listen to it becuase their probally not trying to sell it to u anyways.. - Thu, 15 Jul 2004 11:19am

time and time again...canadian "rock" bands fall short. - Fri, 16 Jul 2004 12:15am

Well i must say, whenever my band writes tunes....if even one part of it sounds similar to any other tune, we trash it, and start over. BUT.....

"time and time again...canadian "rock" bands fall short"

Yes i agree, however, i have to chaulk it up too "life is life". I whole heartedly know that my band-mates and myself could easily fill in for any rock star and, musically hold our own. Just the same with many many other Victoria bands. You have to work at it, and sacrifice everything, with hopes of becoming huge. If you have nothing, no job, no life, etc etc,,,GIV ER! You have nothing to lose. As for the majority of my music friends all have jobs and families. SO..... For any of you who "poke" Nickleback and say they suck, or whateva, you should drop some visine, walk outside into public and see what 75% of the population thinks. Nickleback have definatetly worked at becoming what they are. They have achieved EVERYTHING all of you only dream of. Yet, some of you would look at it and say...."funny funny funny. too bad they are canadian. if they were american someone would of shoot them by now".

Tell me, what have any of you whiners done to try and achieve the same success as Nickleback?

I like this comment......."nickelback are just famous (re:shitty)" I don't faithfully listen to Nickleback, but please tell me Seanor, who would you consider NOT shitty? I have to know! - Fri, 16 Jul 2004 1:00pm

So you have to make it BIG in the music bizz in order to have an opinion? Just because 75% of the population likes a certain band doesnt mean that I have to. I dont like nickelback because i hate their music, not because I think they are sell outs or song rehashers. - Fri, 16 Jul 2004 2:23pm

Of course I agree, but I'll add, I personally wouldn't want to make it big if it wasn't doing what I wanted to play.

It would seem like almost a curse;
"here have a bunch of money and go on tour!! heres a record deal too!!!, but um, you have to play crap, nothing related to the reason you play in the first place"

Mabye I'd do one tour in the sellout sense, but purely to finance something(musically) I'd actually want to do and $ was all that was holding me back, but I'd certainly stop right there.(I would never go looking for this either, which makes it more of a zero chance situation)

If everyone was all in it for the $, I don't think there would be meny local bands around for too long at all.

Though I suspose you can say that is what nickleback loves to play, and they are doing it!

Fine, but I still think they are fucking lame, and not too far from the level of a boy band.

Of course, thats my opinion, being a metal fan, but what is really open for slagging is their pure simplicity and obvious song formulas etc.

Even if you do like them, if you know your stuff, I'm sure anyone would agree that they certainly aren't anything any partially accomplished musician couldn't play in no time.

Nickleback gets insulted more than Limp Bizkit these days, so I think that in itself says something... - Fri, 16 Jul 2004 3:03pm

Nickelback uses a formula for writing hit songs, and it works. But then again, who really writes original riffs these days?!? - Fri, 23 Jul 2004 2:37am

there's lots of riffs that havent been used, its just most bands like to use the simple ones so that layman-types will understand them. thats all well and good, just dont expect me to like it. RUSH RULES! - Sat, 24 Jul 2004 4:38pm
