Afternoon shows at LUCKY BAR?

I was curious if anyone would be interested in this. Our license runs from noon everyday but we generally do not open until 9 PM. That is a lot of empty space. I was thinking about Friday after work shows or maybe Saturday or Sunday all day shows. Would anyone even be interested in this? Might be tough in the summer. I am totally interested in any feedback and would love to hear from anyone who would like to try this out. Ben. - Sat, 10 Jul 2004 11:23pm

I remember back with Three Night Stand trying to get people to come down to the early shows at Lucky on Saturdays. Its really tough to get a group of people out before 10 on a weekend. Here's an idea. Saturday afternoon all agers at Lucky Bar. The all ages scene is getting better and better in Vic and the young music fans in this city deserve to see bands at a decent sounding venue. I realize this is tough for the obvious reason that you can't sell booze. I can almost guarantee that in comparison to an afternoon bar show, the all ages show would be far more crowded. And it would be a huge favour to the local kids and bands. Between non alcoholic drink sales and taking a cut of the door, it may be worth your while. - Sun, 11 Jul 2004 11:46am

Hey hey hey now - there's only one Cavern....That would TOTALLY piss off Paul McCartney er sorry I mean SIR Paul McCartney...Liverpaul......Especially with available all-age venues maybe becoming a question mark, it would be a stone groove kinda thing to put on all-agers at Lucky's. Sacrificing booze sales would be COMPLETELY worth it - I'm sure you'd sell more than a pop or two, anyway. The F.O.E. used to section off the minors from the drinking area, which is ideal. That would be cool if Lucky could somehow emulate this, but the long and narrow american-tavern-style dimensions would make it kinda tricky, I'spose. Some touring bands PREFER doing the odd matinee, too. - Sun, 11 Jul 2004 2:39pm

Another idea for the minors:

I know in the states at shows they tend to have the bar line fenced off and theres a bouncer at the mouth of the drink line checking ID's, that way those who are underage still pay cover and don't miss the show and those of us who are of age don't bitch aboiut having to go dry to accommodate the youngins. - Sun, 11 Jul 2004 3:23pm

And every State has different liquor laws from each Province.... No matter how great some of these ideas may be, a primary factor rests on the liquor laws..... - Sun, 11 Jul 2004 3:39pm

You are right KnifeGhost. I know its legal for a bar to shut down drink sales and have an all ages event. Soundgarden used to do it, Legends still does. I'm wondering if its legal to have an all ages event, then clear the place out and have liscenced event the same night. OR if you have to shut down drink sales for the entire day. I'm not positive on this, but I'm pretty sure that in B.C. it is not legal to have minors in a liscenced place unless it is a restaraunt or a multicultural center such as The Croatian Cultural Center in Vancouver or our very own Multicultural Center downtown. - Sun, 11 Jul 2004 3:49pm

An all-day special event or afternoon all-ager are both great ideas! Hopefully you can pull it off, Ben. - Sun, 11 Jul 2004 9:22pm

Yeah Friday night/Saturday afternoon would make a good Bar show/AA show comobo if licencing would allow it (for certain bands) prolly do it that way since Lucky dosen't do bands Saturday night. Some Friday's could work too?

As far as bands I think it could work in the case of some special events... - Mon, 12 Jul 2004 8:35am

Does everyone remember when the Victoria Multicultural Centre was running all-ages shows? No one came. I think it would be bad business for Lucky to run all-ages shows. It'd be bad for Lucky because they wouldn't make anything in door sales. In turn, they'd take a cut of the door, which makes it bad for bands to play, since they'll be making even less money than they all ready do. - Mon, 12 Jul 2004 10:53am

multi cult center wasnt as well known as Lucky and from what I remember, the shows werent promoted very well. And didnt the bands have to pay for the sound system rentals there or something?

We did Soundgarden one afternoon with Moneyshot and Gorilla Monsoon.. If I recall, about 50 people showed up. - Mon, 12 Jul 2004 11:11am

The easy solution for the lack of turnout is to make the hall cost a flat fee - $150 to $200 maybe. Then the bands get the door. That pays the staff / soundman that need to be there plus gives Lucky a few bucks that they would not make otherwise. The key is to keep it low enough that folks can actually afford the place and also to make sure that it can be open long enough to make it worth it for the bands.

The problem with all-agers at bars is that you either have to have them outside your licensed hours (i.e. before 11 AM in our case) or suspend your licence for the entire day. We looked at doing all-agers in the afternoons here, too, but that was the problem. Just another example of BC's dopey, archaic liquor laws. - Mon, 12 Jul 2004 12:11pm

I know that when we play Lethbridge Death Fest this year, its in a bar and in the bar's parking lot, and its all ages with wristbands or something.

Last year, we played the Leth Death Fest , it was in an exhibition center. the promoter was legally selling beer out of a cooler he had at the entrance behind the counter. There were minors and adults mingling all over the place, with the adults drinking. No cops.

We are also playing The Exchange in Regina in Septemeber, and it is all ages with bar.

BC's liquor laws suck. - Mon, 12 Jul 2004 12:18pm

Mike, that show with Gorilla Monsoon & Moneyshot was great. That show really got me into attending other shows.
It was advertised on The Zone & all, odd that there wasn't more of a turnout.
I did go to one of the all agers at the Multicultural Center (aka The Afterthought) & it wasn't really well attended, good show, though. It's just weird. Nice venue.

I would definitely go to afternoon all agers at Lucky, but that's really lame that you'd have to suspend the license for a day..I've attended afternoon Legends shows but the sound isn't that good & it's hard to see the stage.
If you could get some of the touring bands playing the evenings to also play the afternoons I bet that would get well attended. But then you can't sell booze that evening. How does Legends do it?
But then Scott's idea is a good one. - Mon, 12 Jul 2004 3:42pm

Legends did it because they have a differnt liquor licence I believe they'res is a Banquet licence which means they can open and have under agers in as long as there is food being sold (ie chips work) so the AA thing might not work the more I think about it.

An all day festival kinda thing might be interesting, however gear storage and capacity restrictions might make that a HUGE pain in the ass - Mon, 12 Jul 2004 4:27pm

Grain fed

When I worked at Soundgarden they did a few all agers on Sundays and they were allright. They did sell booze later those nights but being that it isn't there anymore I question that it was fully on the straight and narrow. Anyway all agers there would be great and I'd love to play and attend those shows. If you guys could make it happen there'd be alot of greatful people. - Tue, 13 Jul 2004 1:00am

It was all on the straight and narrow there grain fed. Our licence didn't begin until 7pm. The rules at the time stated that we could use the venue for all-agers and then we had to be closed for a full hour before reopening as a nightclub. Those rules were being looked at at the same time we were doing the afternoon shows so I don't know if things have changed but that's the way it was. We got permission from the liquor board when we used sunday nights as all-agers and we did indeed suspend our licence for those events. But anyone considering using a nightclub for dual purpose, needs to keep in mind security issues - lots of kids get trashed outside the show, come in and cause problems. It started costing us too much in security to make lots of the shows viable. The police and the liquor board seem to pay more attention to all-ager shows being held in nightclubs. - Tue, 13 Jul 2004 9:44am

If Soundgarden's licence didn't start till 7, yeah, they could have an all-ager in the afternoon, close for an hour, and open up as normal. At Logan's we could have an all-ager from 6-10 AM. At least we wouldn't have to worry too much about wasted 13-year-olds.

I can only imagine the cops and the liquor board are complete COCKS when it comes to doing these things in bars. They're cocks about everything else bars try to do. - Tue, 13 Jul 2004 11:36am
