| Matt Smith User Info... | For those of you that didn't make it last night, you missed quite the spectacle. The proceedings kicked off peacefully enough with Chuck Norris, Mass Grave and Iskra performing short crust sets. Iskra stood out in my mind with their brand of controlled chaos, dual screaming vocalists who sounded almost identical live and blackened light-speed riffery interspersed with devastating breakdowns. Needless to say they got the crowd moshing. Goatsblood doled out a sonic beatdown to all those remaining, their versions of tracks taken from their Drull album sounding even slower and more feedback-drenched in the live setting if that's humanly possible. Of course they fucking destroyed their equipment for the denouement as usual! We're lucky to have one of the best sludgecore acts right here in Vancity, definitely one of my favourite local live bands. Goatsblood may seem slightly out of place on a bill with three political grind bands, but Crackwhore stuck out like a sore thumb. This is where the fun began. Everything seemed to be smooth sailing until someone requested some between song banter while they were taking care of a minor sonic difficulty. Connor started in with the typical misogynist bitch-baiting, which failed to get a rise out of the crowd, so before launching into the next song he asked if there were any non-white folks in the audience. I felt my stomach sink when only one dude raised his hand. He just said hey, right on and cracked about being a huge George Bush supporter and something about Iraqis, but in an obviously sardonic manner. This caused non-white boy to leave. I could kind of understand how he might have felt singled-out or out of place or whatever, but he marched back in with a few punker bitches to back him up. I recognized one of them as having displayed a total lack of mosh-pit etiquette earlier on and smelled trouble a-brewin'. She spit on Connor, then grabbed the mic cord and started yanking on it while shrieking, "No! No!", refusing to let go while he continued to grunt away on the other end. After realizing she wasn't going to get anywhere she proceeded to pull his hair and punch out about half the crowd! None of the guys hit back, (although a few of the ladies did), but I'm sure no one would have held it against them if they had. The really insane part was that in the span of 5 minutes the singer's comment had gone from, "hey, right on!" to "if you're not white, get the fuck out", according to the cronies/crones. It was a like a fucking kindergarten game of Telephone. This pathetic display of idiocy went on and on even after it was explained to them that the band was about humour and offending people purposely a la Anal Cunt, until finally the owner came in and stopped the show, kicking everyone out. I left immediately, but apparently afterwards the girl apologized. I'm sorry, but IMHO sorry doesn't cut it; many metalheads aren't a bunch of Xtians eager to forgive you for your sins. This garbage is detrimental to the scene, and if it keeps happening we're going to lose precious venues and support. Metal has a pretty good track record when compared to the club and hip-hop scenes, so lets not fuck it up. - Sat, 5 Jun 2004 12:46pm | ||
| KK Downingsyndrome User Info... | That was a wonderful show. I was the guy who called for in-between song banter knowing full well what it would do. I also got hit in the teeth by one of the chicks and I deserved it. Afterwards, it is true that the girls apologized to all involved. Goatsblood never fails to impress me and that night was no exception. Iskra got me interested enough to see them in a better venue (sightline-wise). Mass Grave were better than I remember, very tight. I missed Chuck Norris, sorry. My teeth are still loose, bitch. And for the record, Metalheads can be very forgiving. I wrote elsewhere that the spectacle was even worth missing a full set of music for. Its rare for me to say something like that. I refuse to let some stupid meat-headed-testosterone-fulled idiot jokes spoil my night. so i left. i dont condone the violence that followed however, but i dont think that making fun of women and non-white people is very funny. | hesher User Info... | Hey guys I booked the show. I like everything from militant vegan crust and grind to the brutalest goregrind with the sickest lyrics. I picked all these bands because they are all fucking talented musicians and great people. I am not condoning what was said. Actually I have no idea what was said cause I was outside blazing a fat jizoint. I asked cw to play because I saw them play live once before and they were fucking amazing. period. When I saw them play there was no bullshit stage banter ( which I think is lame as fuck when any one does it) just killer grind. Had I known that some thing like this might happen I might have reconsidered having them play. The statement was taken out of context by a completely innebriated punk chick who over reacted and ruined a great show. There is a very accurate description of the events that took place in this weeks Georgia Straight that will shed light on this matter. It seems rediculous to me that I have to come on here to defend my bands name because somebody was wasted at my show and made a spectacle.
