Thought I might as well post a review of the Noise! fest so people know what they missed. Yeah, I know I put it on (with my partner in crime Soma) but so what, my opinion is as valid as anyone else's.

=P

Ali Bosworth

Ali was a last minute replacement that I am glad happened. Totally cool software based stuff that as David P Smith noted sounded at times like outtakes from the "Forbidden Planet" score. Very sci-fi type bleeps and blats, constantly moving and with a major fun factor. Nice and lively.

Skrunt Skrunt

Abram was up to his usual chaotic shenanigans this year. Once some initial patch cord glitches were cleaned up we were treated to scraping, digital noise which fluttered delicately around the edge of frustration, catharthis and complete aural confusion. Seeing the process involved on the big screen made it seem all that more mad which was very cool. It definitely had the feel of a scientist far more interested in dangerous toys than the general welfare.

Night Ape

Our set had a few glitches but nothing unrecoverable and the heavy with sweat costume I pulled off afterwards was testament that we were having fun making noise. David P Smith said he liked it and that's good enough for me.

Grandpa Big Balls

This was David P Smith's entourage which featured a number of assistants (Lilly Fawn, an Atlas Strategic peep, etc.). I had no idea what exactly to expect but David did not disappoint. Every show should include saw, sax and stand up bass generated skree, alarm clocks, power tools and malfunctioning mechanical devices, face keyboard solos and rap master 2000 vocals. Hilarious, intense and cacaphonic. It had it all and was one of the more memorable displays I have seen in a while.

Burning Bush

Soundwise I was all over what Burning Bush were offering this year. The electronica feel had been tossed in favour of a darker, far more textural approach that included both purely electronic elements (analog bleeps, resonant sweeps and twirbles, clicks, etc.) as well as plenty of gently scraping sound design which I was extremely satisfied with. Totally unexpected direction shift and one I hope they continue with as it is extremely solid. Visually they had a cool DIY set of footage which matched perfectly with the sounds and with the addition of the extra creepy MJ masks vied with Grandpa Big Balls for my fave of the event.

G42

These folks used a lot of found sound which they wound together in sparsish (not barren, just some air left between things) which was very organic feeling. Enough movement to keep you interested, enough space to let you reflect. Cool.

Gauze Suffocation

While not truly noise, these folks offered up a mixed set of pounding harsh industrial and some more powernoise type material. The harder MZ.412 type martial material was totally awesome and had me reflexively swinging my arms about in rhythmic sympathy, perfectly executed (I want to hear more). The powernoise type pieces I was less enthused about as they were not really appropriate for the event (too dancy) but most of the crowd seemed to be into it so I guess it sucks to be me.

=)

Impact Test Dummy

These Seattle peeps did a really short set. Not sure if it was implied pressure that we were running out of time or whether they just felt it was the right time to stop but I would have preferred a longer set regardless. Low end dirge like a giant chunk of granite being dragged by something macro scale and pneumatic. I really liked how after grinding down for a good amount of time things suddenly opened up to add further injury to the already decimated landscape.

Conure

Like the idiot I am I found it impossible to pronounce "cawn ew er" and again apologize. Anyway, things started off with an initial subtely imperfect rhythmical loop which created a nice hypnotic bed which layers of noise were then added to. This progressed slowly with textures being added and removed and the result nicely intoxicating.

Sleeping With The Earth

The final act of the night definitely did not disappoint. Sleeping With The Earth focussed on huge droning constructions which were dripping with tension and a submerged sense of energy. It was like placing your ear against the retaining wall for a massive centrifuge or hydro electric generator. The way that pilfered melancholic melodic phrases were floated in towards the end lent it an almost spooky feel, remorseful even. Very powerful, like what a purely noise based Magwheels maybe.

All in all a very successful event I thought with a wide variety of sounds and sights. Hopefully those that played enjoyed themselves enough to consider coming back next year. It was encouraging to see a number of new faces in the crowd this year as well. Those of you that didn't make it, well, your loss.

I received a complaint that things were way too noisy, "it's just noise" as well as a complaint it wasn't noisy enough so I think we probably struck the right balance.

I miniDV'd the whole thing so if all goes as planned I will have a DVD to show for it sometime this year.

yes.. those who did not attend did miss out on a once a year event here in victoria.. underground noise bands from all around the west coast.. a full day event for the measly price of 10 bucks..

really enjoyed the videos in morning.. especially the circut bending video.. very funny.. and an introduction for me to alot of how "noise" bands create some of the sounds and textures.

i won't comment on all of the bands.. i dont' have much ground to stand on when it comes to noise.. i really enjoyed night apes set... although i was watching the door.. i saw a bit of the madness.. involving two monkey suits.. alot of weird beeps and pops.. and some very strange noise making devices..good fun!! another act which really impressed me was the granpa big balls..(i think thats there name).. insane grinding noise.. the alarmclock and tv miked and processed was great.. more noise bands should use real instraments and fuck with them.. the sax cello and saw were wykyd. and of coarse.. the handyman adn all his props only added to the show and sound. i really enjoyed a few of the songs from gauze suffocation (i think the guy doing it was the same guy from funerary call).. the techno songs i didnt' like.. but the other two were fucking awsome... female vocals ruled. also the last band from portland i thought was really good.. sleeping with the earth i think.. really good stuff.. i totally got wrapped up in his set.

all in all a great day.. thanks alot to the promoters for putting all the work into this. little fernwood was the perfect venue for this event... can't wait for next year. - Thu, 3 Jun 2004 5:18pm
