Too funny. A good example of why there is Metal in the world...

"So I received tremendous joy when I found the following file over on the SA Forums. Some internet genius took Nickelback's first horrible "hit," and mixed it with Nickelback's newest awful "hit." By "mixed" I mean one shitty song plays in the left speaker, and the other ear-bleeding excuse for rock plays in the right speaker. What a surprise, they are almost EXACTLY THE SAME. It's uncanny, sad, and hilarious at the same time."

Hahah talk about milking a formula for all it's worth! I have worked with Chad and he is a bit narrow minded. I'd kill myself if I had to write the same hit song over and over. - Sat, 22 May 2004 5:14am

Ya know, as much as I hate to admit it, I actually liked the band when Curb came out. Scary thought: When I was in Lyle's Place a few weeks ago, I saw the Hesher EP, total cost (before tax): $75.00. I laughed on the spot, then questioned them why they would charge so much money. - Sat, 22 May 2004 11:53am

i can think of at least 20 A.W.T. songs and about the same amount of songs from every other punk band in the world that do the same shit. only differnce is that nickleback like to get fucked in the ass by huge black linebackers and then suck thier dicks clean after. - Sat, 22 May 2004 2:41pm

Wow, a perfect example of prefab music. Looks like they came from the same template, the tempos line up perfectly, must have played to the same click track. Man they suck. :) - Sun, 23 May 2004 7:04pm

This isn't very new.

You can scientifically create a "hit" song. There are certain things you can do. Nickelback is massive not for their innovative rock, but b/c Chad discovered that a good hook played on repeat sells records.

But I know deep down ALL of you on this board have a soft spot for some pop music... - Mon, 24 May 2004 3:50pm

i dunno- i think this is pretty new. at least it is a new low. i mean, you couldn't do this with any songs from before the 70s or 80s because they weren't using click tracks. all this shit is fucking pro-tooled to hell these days, so it's more machine than man. - Mon, 24 May 2004 5:50pm

It's not rocket science. It's pretty easy to see. If you want a hit write a 3 minute or less song that gets to the hook in under 45seconds. Listen to mainstream radio or look at billboard, it's all pretty much like that. - Mon, 31 May 2004 4:29pm

Kickback, as much as this topic does prove a point that there is a "formula" to hit rock songs, I don't think it's as easy as it seems. There are a lot more things that factor in. Don't get me wrong, I am not a Nickelback fan and never will be. "How you remind me", did well becuase of the lyrics (which you have to admit, are fantastic lyrics) and becuase every part of the song has a memorable hook (don't tell me they are easy to write, cause that's bullshit). The truth is, if you could write a song where every part was memorable upon a listen or two, you'd probably be making it in this industry. But of course, you probably like to write music that makes yourself happy and is somewhat self indulgent. I beleive the Radiohead approach is the best. Keep the radio in mind for the first couple albums and then start having fun on the next few. The whole time, doing something unique that you enjoy. Nickelback will keep writing the same songs over and over.. SAD! NEVER! - Tue, 1 Jun 2004 4:06am

I wasnt refering to just rock tunes. It seems that "hits" in almost every genre of music are like that. I give mad props to Nickelback and the other bands that have figured out how to write a hit. I'm not trying to diss them in anyway, my apologies if i came off arrogant. I was just trying to point out that it's a common theme among billboard #1's and most radio hits that they're short songs and get to the hook really early. When was the last time a 6-7 minute song made number #1? - Tue, 1 Jun 2004 1:55pm

i disagree with the "give mad props" approach. i think these shitty bands are successful not because the music is at all wothwhile or because they can write a good tune, but because they have business skills and the backing of the record industry. i do agree with the radiohead approach, tho. nothing wrong with making money.

think of it this way, say we were all restauranteurs instead of musicians. would anyone be giving props to mcdonalds? ----i think only burger king would. - Tue, 1 Jun 2004 5:00pm
