hey. just looking for some feedback here folks. i am curious as to how people find out about the shows they go to. currently, we at lucky bar advertise in monday, poster on poles downtown, do in store postering, post and advertise on live victoria, just started some limited radio on 91.3, and depend on bands to spread the word to their friends and fans. i still feel like there are many people that are not finding out about our shows and others until it is too late. i do have a limited advertising budget and i want to use it as effectively as i can. what works? what doesn't work? any ideas? if anyone comes up with something cool, there will be tickets and beer. thanks. ben. - Tue, 4 May 2004 6:21pm

Best to use the radio to your advantage. I think The Zone mentions about gigs happening at a few clubs in town (Steamers being one), I can never figure out why all the gigs aren't advertized. There's Shaw Cable (Channel 11), they always advertize gigs at the bottom of the screen (underneath the live video). Does CFUV advertise upcoming gigs in Victoria? - Tue, 4 May 2004 6:44pm

The best thing to do with CFUV is to contact the hosts of shows directly. Phone metal programs and ask them to promote your metal shows. The same goes for punk, hip-hop, indie... You get the idea.
I hear about most of the shows through word of mouth and livevictoria - Tue, 4 May 2004 7:26pm

Hey...

I guess we do a bit more than we mentioned earlier. Right now we advertise shows the following ways:

- pole postering through Metropol,
- in-store postering (by oursleves, through Metropol, or through the bands),
- extra postering and flyering through the bands: we will print as many posters and flyers that they can get rid of,
- Monday magazine advertising
- weekly press releases to every media outlet in Vic (including TC, NewVI, etc)
- free listings in Monday, on Cable 11, etc...
- in-house postering (you've seen how we plaster the place),
- radio sponsorship: we sponsor an hour on the Zone (and they are supposed to mention us in their listings), and sponsor CFUV through fundraising shows (and they run our listings),
- LIVE VICTORIA
- our own website: http://www.luckybar.ca
- word of mouth, but we do so many shows it's hard to tell everyone about all of them.

BUT, though most shows do well, we still hear about people missing shows becasue they did not hear about them. I guess what we are looking for is how to best get the word out. We book a shitload of local bands (11 this week alone, for example), and want to maximize their exposure. So we're just looking to find out what works, what doesn't, and if there is anything we are missing. - Tue, 4 May 2004 7:44pm

what about making a mailing list people can sign up for on your site so that people who usually like to know about the shows can just get the info each week without actively having to go look for it in monday or on livevic, etc. - Thu, 6 May 2004 8:55am

A mailing list is a good idea. I find that if people are interested in seeing live bands, they look in all of those place where you advertise. It's obvious to look in those places. I just find that alot of people in Victoria just don't care about seeing a band most of the time so they aren't always looking that's why they don't see. - Fri, 7 May 2004 5:09pm

Ok well this is a long shot (If u are not already doing this) but a little studying can go a long way so consider this, some bands have followings and lots of friends and such which come to shows, this in turn brings more people....u can figure out which bands have better audience response and good stage presence and so forth and attempt to book more regular shows with those bands which might bring in more people.........BUT as far as getting the word out to people 1 thing....CHEAP BEER for certain shows!!! A simple message that combined with good live bands everybody will pass on word of mouth I mean really the music is great but when ur sitting in a bar watching them u want beer! - Tue, 11 May 2004 12:41pm

It sounds like you have the obvious (and affordable) avenues covered. I work across the street, so I get to see a number of your methods.

I hear about shows @Lucky mostly:(In rough order)
-Word 'o mouth (Primarily from musicians who are about to play there or have friends who are about to do so.)
-Postering (Poles)
-Livevic
-Monday
-Postering in stores (mostly Ditch)
-Ocassionally I wander over on smoke-breaks to read your window

Ways that don't work for me (just for your own info)
-Radio. (I'm a CBC junky.)
-TV (Dont watch it)
-Email subscriptions; I work in computers and the idea of MORE email is repulsive. (Its a good method for some people I suspect)

It sounds cliche, I know, but here it goes:
It pays to be a good musical citizen and not delibrately cover other venues' posters, because nothing will stop others from doing the same to you. It is just one of the ideals that metropol strives for; Maximum viewing time, minimal re-postering. I applaud steve for that.
All venues could potentially experience some increase in traffic if the competition were not so severe.

Speaking of competition, I don't know if bars do this now, but ideally you all have at least as much to learn from each other as far as what will bring people into the core of downtown on a wednesday night... If you can all bring more people downtown they just might wonder what the lineup outside Lucky is all about. (especially as other bars begin to fill) I hope you're all tight, cause I sense a certain opporuntity to spin off each others success.

I can't envy your position, because I would imagine drawing the appropriate crowds at the appropriate time is quite a task; With the addition of doing so affordably.

Keep in mind there is only so much you can do, and different people respond to different approaches. Judging by how many people are sometimes lined up outside your place 30 minutes AFTER last call, I'd say certain nights of the week are no problem. (When I work weekends I guess is when I see that behaviour...)

Keep it up eh? - Tue, 11 May 2004 6:50pm

I think in some cases some, say, $2 off admission tickets handed out could be helpful...

Other than that, I don't see much else useful that hasn't allready been covered
