Maybe I'm just too jaded, but what makes this worse than 99% of the band promo pics out there?
Aside from the awful background (which at least makes it notable), it's pretty much the same as the VAST majority of band shots consisting of 4-5 long-haired dudes in jeans. yawn. oh yeah, they have a tart in front.
I suppose they could have stood in front of an old warehouse or on train tracks . . . that would have totally kicked ass. - Mon, 11 Jan 2010 11:22am

You don't see why this is the worst of the shittiest?
The repeated mirror photo awesomeness.
The quality photo-shopping of the band into the surroundings.
The stances.
Everything. - Mon, 11 Jan 2010 11:29am

The fact that someone photoshopped them into the scene but forgot to add shadows so not only do they appear to levitate but they are also vampires.. but wait, they have reflections in the infinite mirror.. but the reflections are of their front, not back. Also they look portuguese or maybe brazilian. The Bruxsa!

The badness is undeniable. However, there's very little difference between that and these;

http://www.myspace.com/perfecttrend
http://www.myspace.com/apparatustheory

These are the first two bands I took from LiveVic's upcoming shows listing. Their banner photos are easily ignored because they are cliche BORING standard band shots. Apologies to these bands, but if you're trying to pass yourself off as being an artist, why do the same thing as EVERY OTHER BAND? In my opinion mediocre is far worse than bad. We don't need any more place-holders in the music industry, there's already a Nickelback AND Kings of Leon and Billy Talent, and . . . - Mon, 11 Jan 2010 1:13pm

so superslacks, show us what you consider better than average?
I looked at those 2 myspace accounts, and while being myspace(with an originality factor of zero); they looked good. Sure the promo shots were standard, they aren't going after the whole underground, indie, fantasy, metal, or glam look. What else do you expect? Cheesy panoramic shots of nature? Dragons? Fire? Guns? Fire? Dragons? Finkle? Einhorn?
What do you consider over and above/beyond the 'average' promo shot?(and dont limit this to specifically "myspace" accounts) - Mon, 11 Jan 2010 2:21pm Edited: Mon, 11 Jan 2010 2:22pm

JL - your inability to spot cliches is not my 'make work project'. Here are a few of the way-too-overused visual elements in band photos. Good hunting;

- railroad tracks
- brick walls
- urban decay
- black and white photography
- poses that make sure the camera captures ALL the band member's tattoos/ piercings
- 3-5 hairballs standing side-by-side with really tough expressions on their faces
- 3-4 hairballs plus one 'hottie' (usually in the middle of the photo) . . . looking tough.
- looking tough.
- 3-5 geeks in t-shirts doing 'whatever'.
- 3-5 cute girls doing random 'look at me' poses
- acoustic musicians posing with their instruments in some natural environment.
- ska bands doing a 'jump shot'.

I'm not going to criticise working bands who do a standard cheesy group shot, or bands working in a classic genre, because the purpose of a press shot is to make people understand the type of music you play. If you're a metal band and you're as unoriginal as most, then you really SHOULD do all the rock cliches because your audience expects it. Originality is not for everyone . . . - Mon, 11 Jan 2010 4:18pm

Those two Myspace examples are cases of people who just have zero things going for them that would make people want to look at them.

Superslacks wouldn't know a shitty pick if it pooped on his face. The pics he put up where why better the the on Mr. Hell put up.It's out of focus and they look like they just don't care what is going on.Is that the point?

It is true...If you are metal then you have to produce a look people will recognize in your promo pic. Like flowers and bows and pink kittens and fuzzy mittens.Oh sorry that's what superslacks would like to see in a metal band pic. What a fag!!!

Lilith should call herself Areola....and Lucifeious is holding that sword all wrong. If your going to take your shirt of in a black metal pose for your band...Do some steroids or something.

I would and never have ever done a bad metal pose.

What would be a GOOD metal pose or pic there superdicker?

Slacks, you are the biggest critic on this board; be it good or bad. You are hard to please, and I didn't mean it as your an asshole so much as saying its fucking hard to please someone like you lol.
Its not JUST promo pics that im talking about either, Im talking about pretty much EVERYTHING to do with any band asking for advice or putting themselves out there. You seem to always have your 2 bits!(again good or bad, its all subjective I suppose).
Its not like I dont get what your saying; but in all honesty there is a difference between noticing something is wrong and finding something wrong; the latter you seem to do just fine. - Tue, 12 Jan 2010 12:23pm

Ha ha - fair point; I'm good at what I do . . .

I don't know why you think I HATE everything though. I think my feedback is pretty balanced, though sometimes I'm a bit harsh. In case you haven't noticed I save my harshest criticism for mediocrity. Exceptionally bad stuff, like the photo at the top of this page, is interesting enough to start this thread and so I consider it more worthwhile than a lot of stuff. - Tue, 12 Jan 2010 1:20pm

I agree with superslacks on some of his earlier points. and I'd like to think that """professional""" photoshoot-style promo shots aren't even necessary. something more interesting will come out of someone with an artistic interest in photography (and not someone who bought a canon rebel and made a "Tiffany Johnson Photos (c)" facebook page) being present at a live performance or just hanging out with the guys in the band, who hopefully are friends and hang out beyond the "we're in a band" context. some of my favourite band shots are by people who don't take themselves too seriously and just happen to be really interested in art.

I should note that I'm posting this as someone who took shitty point-and-shoot shots at shows and produced pretty much nothing worth seeing beyond a simple archival record of a fun show.

I guess the reasoning behind these promo shots is to make yourselves look professional to labels, booking agents, promoters, and all that. there are tons of examples of band, even recent bands, that have gotten all the exposure they could want without this prepackaged press kit look. I'd even go as far as to say that by matching all the other bands with a press kit, if a press kit is your kind of thing, you're just making yourselves less noticeable. this also applies to things like myspace layouts, shirt designs, etc. - Tue, 12 Jan 2010 3:23pm Edited: Tue, 12 Jan 2010 3:26pm

I can still remember the first time I ever read a Grimlord post.
I was all like, "wth?".
Mr Hell translated for me, and I've attempted to not only master it, but define it for others.
Basically, it's not about spelling errors so much, as using the wrong words because they sound like the word he meant.

ex.
"The pics he put up where why better the the on Mr. Hell put up".
should read
The pictures he put up were way better than the one Mr Hell put up - Tue, 12 Jan 2010 6:51pm

See it's not hard to finger out,you don't need rocket appliances to get your brain compartment going around with different thing and stuff happening with thoughts on how to make it better for your head to get what's up. ...an there is no real logic to whatever it is that I am talking about to you for to say that you have a bad idea of what's going on with how I say it.
