It's January again, which means it's time for the aging punk rockers in town to get together, raise some money for Victoria Hospice and remember a good friend. It's a who's who of Victoria punk rock featuring Alcoholic White Trash, AK-47(Jay would be giggling at the prospect of them playing a bar show in his honor!), The Hoosegow, Keg Killers, The Banned and Lesbian Fist Magnet.

This is not a memorial, it's a celebration. It's a chance to do some good for a cause that was there for Jay...

On this day only you can keep looking at his cock! - Tue, 5 Jan 2010 9:15pm

Who's the FUCKING ASSHOLE that booked the DOA/Frostbacks show at Lucky Bar on the same night as this? Can anyone say boycott? - Tue, 12 Jan 2010 4:35pm

No Griph, there is no advance tickets being sold, just the door. As for promotion, there is a poster. No different than any other punk show around here. We were gonna rent one of those big ass billboards out on the highway but it wasn't in the budget. Maybe next year!!! - Tue, 12 Jan 2010 9:25pm Edited: Tue, 12 Jan 2010 9:28pm

The D.O.A show on the 29th has been booked for ages.... goes without saying that it's unfortunate but it happens. Jay was a good friend of ours, we all miss him and yeah the memorial show at Logans is for a great cause. I know all our friends will be there too so go and support it don't whine about it like a baby... so before you go beakin off about boycottin' our show there ya old pansy be glad that you're in town that even supports live music at all and if you we're one of the unfortunate few who might not have been crawling up Jay's ass or I mean didn't know him you would have two great shows to choose from - ya' F'n goof. Support the music, fuck the scene and whatever rung of some imaginary ladder you think your on Pixie stick. Jay we'll be thinking of ya brother, we promise to pour a beer on some douche bags head(there's so many to choose from) and knock out a lesbian for you too. As far as I know this is the 3rd year in a row for this memorial show. Its been on the 29th every year. You must have booked this one a long time ago. Im not attacking you or either of the bands, but of the limited amount of venues in this town that do support this type of music it seems to happen all too often that the same type of shows get booked on the same nights. Either way, hope the show goes well for ya. - Wed, 13 Jan 2010 8:44am Edited: Wed, 13 Jan 2010 11:29am

You just don't know what time it is...... that's all right. Callin someone an asshole for booking D.O.A while hiding behind a user name pretty much makes your opinion worthless either way. There's no competiton goin on, so no need to wish us well. Everyones gonna have a blast that nite, that's for sure. Ty good job spreading the word, if we get a chance we'll see you there, you know it!! - Wed, 13 Jan 2010 1:28pm

Will do my best to be there.

It shouldn't make a difference if the shows are booked on the same day. The people that had the honour to meet/know/ Jay will go to the benefit show regardless of any other show that is booked on that day. So if you are having a struggle choosing between which show, then perhaps a benefit show is not for you. - Wed, 13 Jan 2010 1:52pm

Thanks for the info Ty, appreciate it. Since I won't be able to make the gig, can I still donate money the day before (dropping off a tenner at Logan's?!?)

WAIT A SECOND!!! Jay Brown Memorial is at Logan's Bar, but according to the poster (see above), DOA/Frostbacks is at Lucky Bar (Takin' Back Maine!!!). Perhaps I could donate $10 to the Hospice instead in Jay Brown's name?!? - Sat, 16 Jan 2010 2:20pm Edited: Sat, 16 Jan 2010 2:33pm

Promotion?!? You guys are doing it as a fundraiser fer the hospice right? Then get the word out, perhaps you could talk to Dave that does that entertainment show fer The Daily (interviews would have to be filmed, there's less then 2 weeks left I think, chat with CHEK-6/Eh Channel (errr.. A Channel :) about it, does CFUV/Camosun radio know about the gig?!? You have a decent idea here (and celebration for Jay Brown always is a good thing), but you could do way more with it, and it'll help a decent organization that benefits not just the punk rockers in town.

Have you thought about filming/recording the gig and selling copies of it to generate more loot for the hospice. I'd love to get an audio copy of the gig, for instance, and I'm silly :) enough to buy it (what about all the people who can't make the gig that want to be a part of it, cause DOA/Frostbacks are playing the same night). Anyhow, just a thought. :) At least do something other then doing the same old gig, please? - Sat, 16 Jan 2010 10:34pm Edited: Sat, 16 Jan 2010 10:38pm

Rob from AK47 here.
We are really looking forward to this show--First bar show in our 1 year existence! Crazy...

We will have our new CD available at this show and so the 29th will, by default, serve as our CD release as well. Which is fitting since our song about Jay, called "January 29th" is kind of the centerpiece of the record.

This is easily the best thing we've ever done and our whole set is comprised of material from it.

Hope to see you all there. - Mon, 18 Jan 2010 10:46am

Honestly Phil, if you're not going to the gig, why continue to beak off about it? Also, posting a poster for the other gig in town that night in this thread is kind of tacky.
The Jay show is what it is. A lot of his friends getting together to play some songs and remember a good man. The benefit part is an added bonus that Jay would appreciate. - Mon, 18 Jan 2010 8:31pm

Lemme just say this...HOW MANY FUCKING TIMES DO PEOPLE NEED TO SEE DOA?!?! The line-up for the benefit show at Logan's is stacked with some of the best bands Victoria has to offer. Anyone who passes over this show to spend double on the show at Lucky, is fucked. I;m pissed that I'll be out of town for this one... - Tue, 19 Jan 2010 10:22pm

Instead of worrying/complaining about the promotion or the poster, just come down and enjoy the bands. I'll buy you a beer.

But Ty, I told you I can't go because I'm needed where I work. Honestly, do you think I wanna miss going to this? I just can't do social environments, but well this is the memorial. Now don't you think I don't wanna go to this, but there is no way I can go, I know Jason would understand. You don't seem to, and no offense, but I've always felt out of place around you, so I'm sorry if you feel annoyed about it *shrug*?

In any case, it's like you don't wanna me going to it. Tell ya what, I'll instead go to the cancer hospice and donate the money in Jay Brown's name. In fact, I recommend that if you can't make the cancer benefit to do exactly what I'm doing. That would be so cool. I'm sure Jay would get a chuckle out of that. :) - Sat, 23 Jan 2010 1:15am Edited: Sat, 23 Jan 2010 2:25am

Phil, of course I want you to go. I missed the part about work. I only remember the part where you have problems with social situations. I can understand that, but I think this would be the exception. Alas, you're working. Sorry for badgering you about it.

I was annoyed because it sounded like you were syaing that we were trying to remove Jay's name from the memorial show. He wanted it to become more about a cancer benefit in his honor, than a memorial. That's all.

Jay would appreciate all the internet arguing in his name! He was kind of sick like that (as we all know!)
