Well glad I actually went to one of the last shows there. Heh... first time I've been there too. I thought it was an awesome venue, albeit a little out of the way for me, and I had a decent time (even the bartenders ROCKED!!!!) - Tue, 23 Mar 2004 8:05pm

Maybe it is because THE GM IS A COMPLETE FUCKING GOOF, and with any luck will befall a serious accident leaving him HIDEOUSLY deformed and with the only true friend he has...himself. The cambie is destined to be the place you go after they kick your ass out of the dougie.
Did that sound bitter? I have my reasons. 5 bucks to the man\woman\pet who pisses on his shoes. All other bodily functions are also acceptable. - Wed, 24 Mar 2004 4:32am

I THOUGHT THE SHOW WENT FAIRLY SMOOTH EXCEPT THE FACT MARK FELL OFF THE STAGE A COUPLE OF TIMES BUT HE'S BLIND WHAT DO YOU EXPECT. WE ALL KNOW WHY THEY DON'T WANT US BACK AND IFEEL RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS BUT IF SOME REDNECK COMES UP ON STAGE AND ASSAULTS YOU'RE LEAD SINGER DURING A FUCKING SOUNDCHECK NO LESS WHAT WOULD YOU DO, EXACTLY I PUNCHED THE GUY IN THE HEAD BIG DEAL. WHAT WOULD HAVE HAPPENED IF THE REDNECK KNOCKED BRANDON'S TEETH OUT WITH THE MICROPHONE WHICH WAS THE REASON I PUNCHED HIM WHO'S RESPONSIBLE THEN. ISAY THE CAMBIE NEEDS A CHECK UP FROM THE NECK UP. Dick- I don't see the reason for you to feel responsible for this bullshit. Anyone else would've done the same thing if put in the same situation. I hope your hand is feeling better.

And for Mark, he was no less drunk than many of the regulars on a regular night.

These are my words of wisdom. Good day. - Wed, 24 Mar 2004 8:33am

I think the change of format was probably already in the works before the soundcheck barroom brawl took place. (very entertaining for all of those who missed it)
We were one of the bands to get a cancellation for our show in April. The management just doesn't get it. The Cambie was a great venue because of the staff. Brenda, Regan, Mike, Grant, the waitstaff, they all rocked and it'll suck to see this venue go back to the "safe zone" of cover bands and old time rock n' roll. Glad we got to play one last show there though! What a blast of a night - Wed, 24 Mar 2004 9:11am

The Cambie had issues with the punk bands before this show, I had a chat with the staff about it and the management werent into us being there at all. The only reason we were back was cause Brenda wanted to make it a cool place to be again. Which she was definitely succeeding in doing. To bad another few months and they would of been packing the joint. It seems to be a common failing there they hire good staff to run the place for them, then shit all over them when they do a good job. Ah well, thanx Adria, and Reegan, and Mike, and Steve and Brenda, and everyone else. Your bosses suck some serious ass. - Wed, 24 Mar 2004 9:12am

I have to agree with Jay on this one..
Brenda worked her little ass off to turn that place around and I think she was real close to the flip...too bad the powers that be could not wait it out a little longer. The room has a great stage, and a bad reputation, which will be added to now as a result of this bad decision.
As far as the Sweathogz punching thing goes,,while I was not in attendence, I would say that:

A. The redneck was the true dick here. Having said that, I am sure he was calling for some Skynard because he was swept up in the joyish country sounds of the Hogz!

B. I would not want to get punched in the head by Big Rick.

I think that the redneck is lucky he didn't get a real beating.
Hope B is feeling better...

I too heard about the soundcheck altercation, but why blame the bands?!? After all, the guy who started the fight was too drunk obviously. I never saw any fights at all that night, it was a cool crowd. That makes no sense, I guess management was just looking for any excuse to get rid of the fringe bands. - Wed, 24 Mar 2004 9:43am

I'm positive it wasn't the "incedent" that sparked this change in events. Like it was said prior ( though of course they don't inform their staff about these things ) it was probably in the works already. I'm just really choked because even though they didn't want to, they should have honoured Brenda's outstanding bookings. Oh well. P.S. It's not the GM that's responsible for all this it's the freakin money grubbin' weaslels over in Vancouver. - Wed, 24 Mar 2004 12:51pm

Thanks for the kind words about the staff - most appreciated. Also thanks Sticky for saying my ass was little.
The fact is - they owed me a lot of money and chose not to renew my contract for booking. I knew this before the weekend but didn't want to say anything cuz I hoped that the shows that I booked would still be on for at least April. After all, I honoured all the bookings of the country bands for two months when I started.
They are known for doing this but I really thought they were going to give me a chance. There was a great crew working there and I will miss everyone.
Don't anyone take it personally cuz I'm not. Sorry for all the shows that got cancelled. I have been working to rebook them in other venues. I will continue booking shows in Victoria and on the island after I take a little break in Vegas this weekend and try and recoup some of the losses that I suffered at the Cambie. - Wed, 24 Mar 2004 4:47pm

Yet again the Cambie brings us another girl we like, first Kara now Brenda, and yet again the Cambie totally fucks her over. Hey maybe they can write up in the newsletter again how much they hate the punk bands. I think maybe we should all pay very close attention to this so that if down the road they hire someone else and they try to start bringing in bands again maybe we should all just stay the fuck away next time huh. It is our time and money, might be a wise move to choose to spend it somewhere else. - Wed, 24 Mar 2004 5:49pm

And the pl0t thickens!!!

Can you prove that they owe you money for bands booked @ The Cambie?!? I suggest hiring legal council in regards to this situation. Also, if you could send me an E-Mail, I'd like to send the Cambie people an E-Mail stating my disappointment over this whole situation (I don't plan to be rude BTW).

There's really only one way for those people to "get the hint" and that's having bands boycott playing at any of the Cambie locations, or people just refusing to go to a show at the Cambie. I dunno whether this would be a good idea, or if any bands/people would be willing to do this, it was just a thought. And perhaps some media attention is in order. These are just ideas mind you, but it sure beats the hell out of sitting on our thumbs and doing jack. In the words of Joe Keithley, Talk - Action = 0. - Wed, 24 Mar 2004 5:57pm

Good luck, Brenda. We played there a few times and like everyone else here have nothing but fond memories. The staff (especially Brenda) were SO great to us. I think they'll always have a tough go of it in that location; Victoria can be awfully slow to change its perceptions of a room or a location (i.e. Esquimalt). - Thu, 25 Mar 2004 2:49am

Hey Brenda you rock!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I thinks its bullshit that the Cambie couldn't suck it up, and continue all contracts with the bands after this weekend, after all you did keep all the fucking country gigs going for two months when you started. How does any company think that they are going to succeed in a tourist community when they dont put in time, money, adn PR!!!!! You put so much time and effort into the bands and the staff. I hope you do realize that you will be missed. For the Cambie, you deserve what is coming to you!!!!!!!!! How do you ever expect to keep valuable employees when you don't appreciate them. What the fuck is this 3 drink rule!!! A company should be greatful for their employees, not punish them for trying to spend money(which is an investment into the company) and have a good time.

To the bands that gave the bar a chance I'm a very greatful, you offer some of the staff an experience of satifaction when you played. Satifaction of where they worked. Its so nice to beable to work in a bar and enjoy the music and the customers ........It's a getaway from the normal white alcoholic trash that goes there.

What a load of bullshit this is, seeing something like this happen. Ask anyone who has worked there and they'll tell you they've seen at least one or more people get fucked over like this. I think its a shame though that it had to be Brenda this time.
When I came to the Cambie for temporary work, I thought it would be easy to go back to my other job when it reopened. After working there a couple weeks though, I started to get attached to all the great staff, and the good bands she was booking. It was starting to remind me
of working at Soundgarden, and then it all goes down the tubes, and I'll be glad when my time is up.
Best of luck to Brenda, you were awesome to work with and
you better stop by and visit when the new club opens. - Mon, 29 Mar 2004 8:14pm

I used to bounce at the cambie when the current GM was still the maintainence man. He doubled as a doorman then. The regulars have always bitched about the music, but when their country bands were playing on saturdays, noone showed. The current GM was on their side, as he himself is a bumpkin. I was there for a year and a half, and watched them fuck people in the ass( no lube) for the entire time. Although you don't agree, grainfed, the GM was definitely a part of that wave of shit. When the goods came back, I think most of us knew it was only a matter of time before it was slammed down. The skinny as I've heard it was that the GM wasn't privvy to the deal made with the newest lovely promoter, and resented her for it. He is apparantley handling promotions himself, which only proves my point about that scurvy control freak. Not fucking cool. The Vancouver cambie might decide to pull this shit again in a year or so, and if you bite on it you only support their screwing of the bands, promoters, and anyone else who they can trample.
Of course that's only my very biased opinion, but I do have valid reasons.

Fak, you took my idea. I was just saying tonight at jammage.."Hey metalheads, lets call ourselves classic rock, copy an old cd of fakin somethin, show up,,,,then SONIC DOOM on their asses", and get back that gig we were scheduled for this weekend. fakers

Thats it, i am starting a 2 faced band. One face for getting gigs at the cambie, and one face for totally fakin the situation up with METAL!

You know it can be done! Watch now, the cambie will start writing clauses in their contracts that bands MUST play what is represented on demo.

Actually, what i will just do is start getting gigs at the cambie and just not showing. That sounds better.

Word on the street is that the Cambie were promising bands WAAAAY too much dough for what the market could bear (I heard of one night where the 3 bands were supposed to get $1000 in total which is nuts). I can't confirm this but if that's true then I for one could see the writing on the wall. However if that really IS the case, then the manager should be held responsible for it; he should have had the ability to figure out that his door take was way less than what he was paying bands. Having said all this I'm not surprised at the Cambie's actions. I say that should they ever decide to offer live music of any description ever again that they should be forced to pay up front, in cash, and that ALL the local bands, punk, country or otherwise should enforce this collectively. In other words, put the fuckers on probation. Like I always say to all nightclubs: I don't exist because of you, you exist because of me. - Sat, 3 Apr 2004 12:33pm
