Victoria's 5th Anniversary Ska Festival is proud to confirm another great act for the Victoria Curling Club on Saturday, July 17th/2004.

That act is GREG MILKA CROWE, from Winnipeg off the Bacteria Buffet Record Label.

Greg Milka Crowe has a brand new CD coming out in April 2004 called 'Bhakta Basics'which reflects the talent from a rising talented musician that has spent over 10 years in the Winnipeg ska scene.

The CD offers beautifully played jazzy/ska with conscious lyrics, and a variety of genres including folk, rock reggae, funk, worldbeat and accapella ska/jazz. The full length 16 song CD offers something for almost everyone that appreciates some style of music in the rock and roll genre.

Notably, Greg Milka Crowe has played in other bands including Whole Lotta Milk and the Wedgewoods (an extremely talented third wave ska/rock band). He also regularly performs shows on his own accord bringing his voice and guitar to the stage similar to Canadian Ska Great - Chris Murray.

For more info on Greg Milka Crowe go to http://www.gregmilkacrowe.com MP3s from Greg Milka Crowe's new album will be posted as soon as the album comes out. - Mon, 22 Mar 2004 4:21am

Victoria BC Ska Society is proud to confirm three more sweet acts for VICTORIA'S 5TH ANNIVERSARY SKA FESTIVAL on Saturday, July 17th/2004 at the Victoria Curling Club. Here's a clue before we begin... First of all some of the rumours were correct and if you listened to Skankster's Paradise these last couple of months you'll know these confirmations already.

These three awesome acts known to ska/reggae and dancehall listeners worldwide toured as the Ska Mob Tour in Eastern US earlier in the year. If you haven't guessed yet, we'll let the kat out of the bag NOW!

Check this out...

DR. RING DING (Muenster, Germany)
dancehall/reggae/ska

KING DJANGO (New York, NY)
dancehall/reggae/ska

EASTERN STANDARD TIME (Washington, DC)
ska/jazz/reggae

Below King Django comments how they came up with the idea to have this powerhouse trio perform all together:

"The idea first came to us when Dr. Ring Ding and I toured Europe this June as the Trans-Atlantic Dancehall Clash. We had a backing band from Switzerland called The Scrucialists. In Barcelona we happened to play a show with Eastern Standard Time. We were really into EST and they said they were into us so I think the idea started brewing that night."

NOW MEET DR. RING DING!!! (Finally he comes after four years of asking!!!:) - YES!

So, how does one become fluent in Jamaican patois, as well as Jamaican music and culture, especially when one is born halfway around the world from Kingston?

For the man we know as Dr. Ring Ding, it's been a mixture of experience and education drawn from a colorful variety of sources. Richard Jung was born in 1970 in Muenster, Germany, to a German father and French mother, so his interest in languages and translation is practically genetic. Building on his own multilingual background, Richie made languages the main focus of his academic studies, earning a diploma (or "Abitur") at prep school in France and then returning to Germany to extend his studies in languages and music, concentrating in English and romance languages as well as musical science.

Having played the trombone since age 11, Richie also developed a strong interest in music from various cultures, one of these being the Two Tone ska from nearby England. In 1987, at age 17, he joined El Bosso and the Ping Pongs, his first ska band, and became a big fan of other 80s Two Tone-inspired bands, like The Toasters from New York City. In that same year, Richie also attended his first ska/reggae performance, going to see Jamaican legend Desmond Dekker (Might as well start with the best!). Thus began his real interest in the Jamaican roots of ska.

Richie has never considered himself a record "collector," but will confess to an obsession with record buying, particularly when it comes to ska and reggae. His home town, Muenster, Germany, just happens to be the location of Irie Records, the largest importer/exporter of Jamaican music in Europe, so his addiction has been well fed. Today, his record collection holds nearly every significant recording to come out of Kingston. Like most fans, his primary source for knowledge has come from liner notes for these albums and subsequent compilations and close attention to the lyrical content. His interest and adeptness for languages also lead to further readings in Jamaican language and culture, including Understanding Jamaican Patois by L. Emilie Adams and Aunty Roachy Seh by the popular Jamaican poet, Louise Bennett. A relentless scholar of the culture, he continued to dig deeper, learning Jamaican folk songs and nursery rhymes and even memorizing the national anthem. From his language studies, Richie knew that learning a new language was much more than learning vocabulary and pronounciation; it was learnign a whole different view of life.

In the early 90s, Richie had the opportunity to form a traditional ska band. On a momentary whim, he introduced himself as Dr. Ring Ding, the name he has since performed as with the Senior Allstars, who then began to establish themselves as the premier ska act in Europe. Many Jamaican musicians also began to recognize the band and they were soon supporting such legendary names as Lord Tanamo, Derrick Morgan, and Doreen Schaefer. On the road and in clubs, Richie pursued his Jamaican studies, this time straight from the source through conversations with these musicians as well as more of his idols like Laurel Aitken and Desmond Dekker.

Dr. Ring Ding's mastery of patois is clear in his compositions and performances. He currently has fans from Kingston, Jamaica, to Jamaica, Queens, and nearly everywhere there are fans of the Jamaican beat.

And also remember that...

"What's always amazing about Dr. Ring-Ding is the depth of his musical interests, knowledge and abilities, always offering something fresh, always demanding our attention."

KING DJANGO (NY, NY)- HE'S BACK!!!:)

Drawing on diverse influences such as dancehall, ska, roots reggae, punk rock, classic rock, soul, swing, and American and Yiddish folk music, King Django is definitely a hard man to pin down. A seminal force in the East Coast scene, he has made his name as a singer, ragamuffin MC, songwriter, arranger, instrumentalist (trombone, ukulele, harmonica, melodica, etc.), producer, studio engineer and label owner. His recording and touring credits include Stubborn All-Stars, Skinnerbox, Rancid, The Toasters, The Slackers and Murphy's Law. He always keeps busy and always has a surprise or two up his sleeve.

At present, Django spends a lot of time in his Version City recording studio in New Brunswick, NJ. He also performs regularly with King Django's Roots and Culture Band, Crazy Baldhead Sound System, and Jah Culture Sound System among others.

NOW MEET EASTERN STANDARD TIME!! - They will be backing both Dr. Ring Ding and King Django

Washington DC's premier Ska-Jazz outfit, Eastern Standard Time, brings together top musicians from the Jazz and Caribbean music scenes of the nation's capitol. The diverse musical backgrounds of the players make for a unique spin on a traditional Jamaican sound, appealing to everyone from the Ska massive to the Caribbean community to the Jazz enthusiast.

While the backgrounds of the members may be varied, Eastern Standard Time remains true to the roots of Ska music by playing a style that has been a seminal influence on many modern genres such as Reggae, Alternative, Punk and Rap. The unique sound--both cutting edge and simultaneously traditional--comes from their modern implementation of the original Ska recipe: hot Jazz melodies and Bop runs overlay syncopated Caribbean rhythms. Eastern Standard Time performs their own music, yet Ska and Jazz purists find interesting insight into familiar tunes when Eastern Standard Time put a unique spin on a Jamaican Ska classic or a new twist to a Jazz standard. Their sound reaches the traditional Ska scene, but transcends genres to make them equally suited to outdoor festivals or smoky juke joints. Eastern Standard Time is for people who want to get their feet movin' on the dance floor.

Eastern Standard Time is a world-renowned act, with multiple tours taking them through the United States, and overseas to Canada, Europe the British Isles and Russia. Their numerous recordings (their discography lists almost thirty titles) have brought them acclaim from as close as their own hometown--where they were dubbed "one of Washington's best bands" by the Washington Post-- to far flung areas of the globe such as Argentina, Indonesia, the Philippines, Russia, Slovenia and Venezuela, just to name a few.

Eastern Standard Time has been featured on TV specials such as MTV's "120 Minutes" and on television talk shows and documentaries both domestically and internationally. Their music has been used in films and soundtracks.

Eastern Standard Time is guaranteed to get your feet moving. Their unforgettable style and impeccable musicianship bring pleasure to the ears of all listeners. Their exciting live performances are an exceptional experience--not just a concert, but an event--proving that they can bring the house down, time and "Eastern Standard Time" again!

Victoria BC Ska Society is proud to announce another confirmation for VICTORIA'S 5TH ANNIVERSARY SKA FESTIVAL July 15th - July 17th/2004.

That confirmation is none other than TEN TOO LATE! Ten Too Late are a 7 piece Victoria bred ska band that formed 2 years ago that have been consistently moving in a positive direction. Although most of them still have yet to reach the legal drinking age,:) they continue to develop with putting out new songs, and playing at tons of all ages show around Victoria and the rest of Vancouver Island. Ten Too Late's musical style is mostly ska but their music has hints of punk, reggae and rock vibes. Ten Too Late are presently working on a full length CD in time for VICTORIA'S 5TH ANNIVERSARY SKA FESTIVAL but if they don't finish by that time, you'll most likely at least get to hear a brand new 5 or 6 song EP. We hope this is just the beginning of new music we'll see in the positive evolution of TEN TOO LATE! - Sun, 4 Apr 2004 7:51pm

The Victoria BC Ska Society is proud to announce a fairly major confirmation for VICTORIA'S 5TH ANNIVERSARY SKA FESTIVAL. The confirmed band we are referring to is WESTBOUND TRAIN - soul/reggae/old school R&B/ska (Boston, U.S.A)

Westbound Train has been bringing their sweet sounding dance music to the masses since 2001. Their 2002 release "Searching for A Melody" has been described as soulful, flowing, and well rooted, with melodic and yearning lyrics combined with a beat that you can't help but move to. Though the winter of 2003 brought about change in their line-up, Westbound Train has grown stronger with a dedication to their passion and an unfailing persistence.

Jesse Hayes, Cory Williams, Thad Merritt, Obi Fernandez, Rich Graiko, Gideon Blumenthal, and Dave Holden bring together the feeling and emotion of old school RnB and Soul with a flavourful new school flare. You can hear the ghosts of Curtis Mayfield, Jim Croce, and Marvin Gaye in every lyric that Obi writes and story that he tells. These influences and others, such as Stevie Wonder and Bob Dylan, are referenced so effortlessly and fluidly that they leave the listener with the sort of satisfaction money just can't buy. Combine this with the truly authentic sound of their rhythm section and a horn section rivaled by few, and you have the recipe for a party you won't forget. But it's not just the way they tell a story, or the immense musicality of this group, that makes it so intense. It's the group's idea of family and coherent manner in which they function, that makes this ensemble what it is. A desire to shed some positive light on this dark world is the cement that rivets this association.

Source: http://www.westboundsound.com (Biography)

Obi also tells us that they are super stoked to come to VICTORIA'S 5TH ANNIVERSARY SKA FESTIVAL! This year seems to be a sweet year for the band. In addition to Westbound Train being chosen to open for Hepcat in NY and Philadelphia at the end of May/04, check out some of the pictures from when Obi recently filled in for the Skatalites' Wil Clarke. -- Trust us:This guys are all talented musicians...:)

--- All we can say is you're all in for a nice treat on Thursday, July 15th/04. Tickets will go on sale shortly.
