Well, just got the news last week, next monday will be the last metal night at Logans.

Prices down to $2 beers and Hi-balls yet none of you metalheads who continuiously bitch about how noone plays any "troo metal" bother to show up still.

It's pretty sad we wait for 6 years for such an occourance, and you bangers would rather stay at home flexing your wrists or stare at twinkies in evolution.

Thanks to all you graverobbers who did come out and support the night!
The fact that this is being cancelled out of total lack of support just goes to show Victoria is more delicate than I had feared.

Also wanna thank the regulars at Logans who dispite had a sour taste at first, now support the night, it's just a shame that they were all who was doing it.

Have fun at "hardcore night" everyone!!!

VIC BANGERS ARE WEAK!!!

you can't sit thought hours of deathmetal? lol. your a dork. dork as in horse's wiener!!! people don't force you to listen to the music if you were to go. if you don't listen to it, then why makes excuses why you don't go. logan's metal mondays are where you can hang out with friends while having metal play in the background. it's not so loud that you can't hear the person beside you talk. i've been going the last 2 weeks and i have very much enjoyed myself and i recommend it to anyone who's not a dorkwith some lame excuse. - Wed, 25 Feb 2004 10:31am

To be honest, I've never heard os most of those bands, so my opinion means shit all. What if it was on a differant night then? Maybe even just one time on a weekend, then see if it brings in more $ than a show. Then it'd be a ho-down. I work at 4 am on tuesdays, no way I could go and I always wanted to check it out. - Wed, 25 Feb 2004 11:58am

I've heard of them, and I like them, but I can see from that list that the reasons your having dead nights are fairly apparent. One, the majority of people can only take a bit of black metal, or grindcore, or powermetal, or whatever other genre you happen to have on at that moment. Most people wouldnt even know they exist. That goes for the majority of metalheads as well. Give them Slayer and Pantera, and throw in some Tool for the girls to dance too and theres the kind of metal night that will bring in the crowds. Thats just what appeals to the masses, and that's the same everywhere. In Victoria it's more apparent because it's a smaller city so when you appeal to the smaller subgenres there just arent enough people to fill a bar on a monday. When your going against somewhere like Evolution that has been doing it forever and has become part of peoples weekly schedule. They seem to play enough of so many different types of stuff in a night that the punks and metalheads and dumb twinkies and jocks all hear something they like ever once in a while. Enough to keep them coming back every week till it just becomes part of life, then you cant get them to go anywhere else on a monday. I know I tried to run punkrock mondays at the limit and failed cause of Evo. Then we tried punk rock tuesdays at Soundgarden and had a bitch of a time cause everyone had went out monday. - Wed, 25 Feb 2004 1:45pm

I checked out metal night at Logan's once and the music was great but you could barely hear it. The thing about Evo is they pound the tunes, even if it's fucking Disturbed for the kazillionth time. I don't go to the bar to sit around and chat, I want to hear LOUD music. That being said, I really wish that someone would come up with an alternative to Evo on Mondays. I think if you did a Metal/Punk combo and advertised the shit out of it, matched their drink specials you could pull some of the regulars away. Plus, if you get the regular Evo chicks to go somewhere else, than the guys will follow...so call it Fetish night or something and they'll come swarming in droves. - Wed, 25 Feb 2004 4:40pm

Well for the volume, I got numerous complaints of it being too loud from the regulars who were about the only regular supporters of metalnight, and they'd all rather listen to the doors...

As for the tool thing etc jay, one there no dance floor at Logan's and 2 Pantera tool and sepultura dont constitute a metal night, might as well just go to evo right?

those who wouldnt like evo, why would they come to a smaller bar with no dance floor to hear the same pathetic crap that the bigger bar plays...

The idea was play the heavy shit the other bars won't, theres no poin to the night if youre gonna water it down to metallica and iron maiden, pantera etc. all night, granted better than evolution, but you can still hear the above in evo - the rest I play you cannot, and there was a huge cry for this exact night, now it's been here for ages and next to nill support, the same people who bitch still go to evolution, and the others just stay home.

A punk/metal night would be cool but good luck finding a DJ who doesn't again mainstream the whole deal all to shit, its sad theres nothing for us HC metalheads and punks around here but, fact is, looks like without constant live music, people would rather go stare at some cheap flesh in a dance bar... - Wed, 25 Feb 2004 5:26pm

Aeon, Assuck, Impaled, Ghoul . . . impressive. Yeah its the Monday thing (class early on Tuesday) and the fact that I don't actually turn nineteen for another week, but supposedly no one cards at Logans. Shame to see this go. Dude, Dod Sanger, I think you should be a hands down promoter and put on a bunch of metal shows. We'd play. - Wed, 25 Feb 2004 6:05pm

I suspect the reason for the lack of success of the Logan's metal night was simply that the stuff listed on the playlist above isn't the kind of music that one can sit and listen to in the background while sipping on a beer with friends. When I want to hear extreme music I want it LOUD and hearing it at a conversational level just reduces it to the equivalent of background noise. All of the extreme kinds of metal have to be heard loud and you have to concentrate to differentiate between the things that are happening in the music. And I'll agree that 3 sets of this stuff in a row is a little much; I would probably last about an hour before I would have had enough. - Wed, 25 Feb 2004 7:57pm

Geez, I listen to alot of those bands quietly in the background all the time.

Actually Dodsie is right, alot of those bands are groove based death metal type bands. ie: Witchery, Lamb Of God, Carcass, In Flames etc etc. - Thu, 26 Feb 2004 4:51am

Carcass, well, over the years they slowly morphed into a groove based death metal band.. THEY didnt exactly start that way! Sorta started with Descanting The Insolubrious, but have you ever listened to Swan Song? Songs like Childs Play, Room 101, Black Star, Keep On Rotting In The Free World etc. they are almost commercially catchy in the riffs. - Thu, 26 Feb 2004 5:41am

Its always been more of a logistics proplem for me. I can handle drinking till 2 and then getting up for work in the morning, but I cant get to and from Saanichton without driving. I went sober once or twice, but I remember being really thirsty and I would rather not torture myself again. When I went there was always a truck load of redneck metalheads asking to come with. We really need a chartered bus to and from the boonies instead of having to drop $50 on a cab if we miss the 10 oclock bus. I remember days when the last bus to hicksville left vic at 12:15 am. Now if you go to the bar you have to leave at 9:30, or find someone to DD. And dammit I seem to be the only redneck with vehicles. - Thu, 26 Feb 2004 9:41am

The sober thing is the reason why I just dont go to as many shows as Id like to.. I live in Saanich as well, and Im about a $15 cab ride from downtown.

If only they had a 3am bus, like the hell bus I used to catch from downtown Vancouver when I lived in New West. - Thu, 26 Feb 2004 9:59am

If you wanna get drunk, pay some cabbie 50 bucks or drive home loaded outta your gorde all the way up the pat bay at 3am...

Makes alotta sense, especially since it's quite apparent, if there were late busses, theyd be packed!!! - Thu, 26 Feb 2004 11:26am

Sorry I never made it out to metal night... I work Monday nights but Logans is stumbling distance from my house.

I do feel for you guys out in the burbs, when I first moved here it was always a hassle going out and getting home safe.

I for one will be into a Hardcore night at Logans... could you not mix the two? I like a little metal(and I really get tired of Metallica and Disturbed), but sometimes I like some indie rock, garage and hardcore. And don't forget, indie rock girls are so cute! - Mon, 1 Mar 2004 7:41pm

the problem here is that no one in victoria has the balls to host a metal night on a weekend, they would lose money. clubs rely on people who listen to crap
mondays have a low risk factor no one goes out on a monday , so realisticly a club could play whatever they wanted, so lets host a night for metal/hardcore ect. listeners on a day that isnt already designated to the same bullshit we play on the 6 other days and see who shows up??? i remember a day when i actually heard dying fetus and at the gates at evo, i gave him the discs, what the fuck happened to that place rotation wise?? why is it so weak now?
and by the way , SIX FEET UNDER BLOWS! - Wed, 24 Mar 2004 6:21pm

Dod did a great job here. I think the only problem was that his playlist was maybe too good--there are only so many people who appreciate really extreme, obscure music in any genre, and to expect enough of them to come out every week in a town the size of Victoria is maybe too much. Nobody wanted to dilute the playlist and have it go the way Evolution's apparently did.

The fact that a lot of metal fans might see us as an indie/emo/country/fag bar probably didn't help. - Thu, 25 Mar 2004 6:23am
