That first album thread got me thinking. Since most of us are musicians, im sure we've all recorded at least one demo or album or just a tape of drunken flatulence. I wanna know what was your first recording that you ever played on and how ghetto the process was or somethin. Im just hella bored.

For me, my first "public" demo/cd was Gallows' spirit mocking flesh. Mr. Brainless sure did a wicked number on that one, too bad it wasn't mastered.

I also recorded two cd's prior to that with destiny impaired, one at the musicians warehouse in nanaimo and the other at my high school. both were too shitty to see the light of day. - Tue, 24 Feb 2004 6:50pm

Going a good ways back: first recording done on a 4 track in Calgary with Rumours of War in 89. Live in a rehearsal room, 2 mics on drums (sm58s), bass DI, and line out from the guitar amp. Bussed the two drum tracks down to one, and added vox as overdub. We recorded 6 songs, and 2 of them managed to chart on CJSW (UofC radio station) a number 3 and a number 6.... although before that tape there were about 4 others we did in a similar fashion that never saw the light of day - Wed, 25 Feb 2004 5:34am

Ah memories. The first studio recordings I ever appeared on were with my old pal Casey Pechet for a never released single that featured a version of "Ticket To Ride" on the A-side and a "punk" version of "It's Not Unusual" on the B-side. This would have been in about '78; the studio was the original Legacy (Tascam 80-8). I only got the gig because I owned an electric 12-string. The singer had blown his voice so we overdubbed millions of harmonies on it; it's exquisitely awful. The first thing I played on that the public could buy was the first Shovlhead tape; we sold almost 500 of it, mostly around Victoria. I had just bought a Yamaha compressor, a piece of shit that today I wouldn't use to plug an ugly hole in my rack. I had no idea exactly what a compressor did; I just knew that the "pros" used them and therefore so should I. Result: Lousy recording compressed within an inch of its life. Oh well you have to start somewhere. - Wed, 25 Feb 2004 8:35am

hmm, I did a few recordings on this old four track we used to have, mostly just all messed up on m.d.a. singing about how pretty everything was at the time... bwahahahahah. That was the mid eighties. The first actual studio time I spent was doing the first Drone demo in 89. Pretty neat though first time in a studio and we get a record deal out of it that was kinda cool. - Wed, 25 Feb 2004 1:47pm

I did this wicked underground death metal tape with no drums, just me growling with guitars. It's really good. At least for me being 13 at the time. - Wed, 25 Feb 2004 5:07pm

Mitochondrion demo's before we had any recording software was done with an intricate mess of Fruity Loops demos and N-track Studio demos both stolen from the internet. Done in my bedroom until my parents told us to fuck off. Throw in a fire wire and a band that defines "un-tight" and you have some real shit. Luckily that one got lost on my old computer. But it was exciting at the time. I think I had just turned 17 actually. - Thu, 26 Feb 2004 3:18pm

i've done quite a number of demos that havent seen the light of day aside from -moms living room- my first band did a tape recording at a church that was done live and took one night to do i was like 14 and it was awful secondly that same band -which was one of the worst bands in excistence "the gnome hunters"- also recorded at this guys basement he did a pretty good job but we never played anymore gigs and the crappy music never hit the light of day....now in ten too late we have been "recording" for a year now first at this free studio called aftermath it was the worst reocrding ever we had to get it done ina month and we were using electronic drums cuase they made us it sucked...than we did some bass and drumms at infinity studios with adam from armchair cynics and finish up that song in nanaimo with the kiltlifters...that song can be found on our website http://www.tentoolate.com and now were working in my fresh home studio were far along u can here one of the songs at http://www.unawarestudios.cjb.net - Thu, 26 Feb 2004 3:52pm

First official recording I'd bother to acknowledge was Acorn Hell-Big Fat Dirt Road. 90 minutes of classic mockery. Since BFDR there have been upwards of 15 releases. If someone begs enough, we might make them publicly available.

The first real recording I care to mention was Grump - Eight Elbows. A 4 song demo on cassette back around '92 recorded by Bert at Soundloom Productions in Fernwood.

It was quickly followed up by another 3 song demo at the same studio by the same guy (he liked us :), which was also quickly followed up by the singer quiting and the band entering a downward spiral of doom.

Funny, Bert (the guy recording us) said to us "no matter what, just DON'T break up!!". hehe...

Listen here if you like:
