Im sure everyone here is WELL aware of the shotty business and quality you recieve down at Long and McQuade, so this isnt anything new, I just need to rant...

So for xmas, I was lucky enough snag a great Hendrix JH-1 Wah Pedal which was used but claimed to be in "great condition". So I bring it hope expecting... "L&M are a nationwide chain, and im sure they're true to their word" but i was wrong, I plug in the pedal and its crap. The reostat (sp?) inside is dirty as hell and makes the pedal sound like total ass.

So I take it back into them and they say "oh im so sorry, we'll fix it". So today I go and pick it up from repairs which they said solved the problem and gues f'in what.... THE PEDAL STILL SOUNDS LIKE ASS. It's as is if they didnt even bother to do anything at all to repair the pedal. I'd expect more from a company as big them, now I know better. Local stores are the way to go.

If it wasn't for L&M, numerous artists wouldn't be where they are. I hear horror stories, and think to myself, why ain't I working there :( I have had nothing but good moments from there, so cool! - Sun, 15 Feb 2004 7:17pm

Well, I do believe every Zone91.3 band of the month receives $100 for L&M gear/services. I'm not sure who's paying for that $100, but I'm just guessing that it's donated. They also give free clinics such as the one with Gordie Johnson. They also help out musician's by having a crapload of gear to choose from and some really great staff, what more do you want? - Sun, 15 Feb 2004 9:21pm

Hey [+], the pedal was a present dumbass, so instead of my parents ruining the surprise for me, they took stock in the fact that L&M is a nationwide chain that SHOULD deliver a quality service. So they trusted them, then when I open the present I find its already fucked up.

Every time I go into L&M something annoying happens. the staff honestly need to get off their powertrips an acknowledge that yes, they ARE wrong sometimes, and for once, it would be nice if instead of just bullshitting me with bogus info, they would just simply take a blow to their ego and say "sorry I dont know the answer to that, i'll ask one of my superiors"

In general I dont bitch about this sort of stuff, but for crying out loud, they're the biggest Music Equipment Store in the nation (maybe 2nd to Tom Lee) yet they constantly put out shotty service. Its ridiculous. If those jokers worked at any other job they would be fired by now. - Tue, 17 Feb 2004 8:43pm

there may very well be some self-absorbed know-it-alls working in that store, who won't admit that they are not omniscient, but THOSE TYPES ARE EVERYWHERE. It's not necessarily the entire store that is fucked. I've walked away from my share of sales people (note that it is their job to sell you as much crap as possible) in that store for various reasons, but I DO know a few faces that I seek out every time I am in there, because they act like genuine people and have actually steered me away from a bad move. I've had better experiences there than other music stores in town. One ugly stripper probably won't stop you from going to the Lion Rouge...Nes Pas? - Wed, 18 Feb 2004 7:43am

L&M are evil, there staff made me feel even more stupid than I generally feel. O.k I admit, I play guitar horribly and dont know a hell of alot, And when I asked questions about pedals (wow what a coincedence) they acted all shit nosed about it and talked to me like I was two. So yes I agree L&M isn't all its cracked up to be. Plus they tried to tell me this squire strat that sounded like a tin can was a "great easy to handel guitar". I CALL BULLSHIT! - Wed, 18 Feb 2004 4:53pm

When I was in there yesterday looking for a pre-amp tube, the dude didn't know anything about tubes.... He said he was sorry, but he didn't know anything about that, and consulted a superior.....

Maybe L&M has a a few pricks on staff.... I certainly like dealing with some of their employees more than others.... But I've yet to have a problem with them....

But really, if you don't like it, but at another store.... Gordie at Gordie's music on Fort is a great guy to deal with...... - Thu, 19 Feb 2004 9:09am

Hmm..I've had trouble with L&M, too.
#1 - They need more staff. We waited for at least 30 mins for someone to help us.
#2 - They don't do a good job of phoning when an item comes in.
#3 - As already said, some of them don't know their stuff but act as if they do...annoying as hell.

I haven't shopped around so much, but I can tell you that from my experience L&M beats the crap out of Tempo Trend...

Is there any better place to shop for drums/equipment than L&M in town? - Thu, 19 Feb 2004 1:22pm

I agree, Gordies is an EXCELLENT store to go to, and the staff have always given 110% to ensure I got the best deal.

Anyways regarding L&M. I'll be the first to admit that I was angry when I posted my rants, and that yes, there are many staff members at L&M that DO do their jobs very well and they deserve credit for their hardwork. My apologies to those people.

Anwyays, since all this (apparently they read my rant about them here :p ), the matter has been resolved, L&M were apologetic for their inconvenience to me, and offered a full refund, which I used to buy the brand new version of the pedal that I had bought 2nd Hand. So in the long run, I was quite happy with the way things turned out. Thumbs up to L&M on that! - Thu, 19 Feb 2004 1:22pm

They also lie, told me that I could put up to 500 dollars more worth of equip on my monthly payment plan without having to put more money down because my initial down payment was soo large, I went in the other day to throw an SM58 and a patchcord on it, the fuckers demanded 85 dollars , even after buddy went out of his way to let me know he was "notating the account" with the fact that I can put up to 500 more on my tab without a deposit, I even called before I went in.

They need to stop hiring morons. - Thu, 19 Feb 2004 1:30pm

AND SO BOB THE MONKEY SAT DOWN TO WRITE HIS APPLICATION LETTER FOR THE JOB HE WANTED AT L&M

Hello L&M staff! My name is Bob and I am a mentally retarted monkey. I tend to do nothing but scratch my ass all day and talk big about guitar equipment while attempting to belittle those around me driving away a shit load of buisness... WANNA HIRE ME?

TWO HOURS LATER AFTER L&M RECIEVED HIS LETTER, THEY PHONED BOB TO TELL HIM HE WAS HIRED WITH NO DOUBT ABOUT HIS PREFORMANCE ABILITY. - Thu, 19 Feb 2004 6:31pm

You could get musical mail order catalogs that sell some items at whole sale prices and order from them. Even after taxes and shipping you can save alot of money. If you dont know what you want you can try the product out at L&M before ordering. http://www.americanmusical.com and http://www.carvin.com for starters. At one time you could order fender guitars and amps from http://www.musiciansfriend.com for less than a fender licensed shop owner, not sure if thats true anymore. If an item was less through a wholesale company, I used to bring the catlog to the local music store with me as a barganing tool. Usually the manager would match the price or close enough to make waiting for shipping not worth the wait. I beleave in supporting your local business if they try to be reasonable in negotiating a price. One thing I like about some of these order companies is that since they never allow returns on guitars for example (unless there's a manufacturing flaw) The guitar has never been played before. Where L&M, everything could be played by anyone walking in. - Fri, 20 Feb 2004 8:14am

Well now L&M aren't perfect, and I've had my disagreements with them over the years, once to the point where I simply didn't spend any money there for a couple of years. But you have to look at it from their perspective. For starters they give musicians credit (which is like fronting heroin to junkies) and they act as a conduit for a lot of used gear. Sure sometimes the staff get a bit testy; you would too if you had to wear a tie all day while a bunch of long haired geeks play "Eruption" all day on your nice new guitars, or are besieged by morons who've blown up their amps by pouring beer into them whining about refunds etc. Now that they have a bunch of staff who I've got to know they have been super useful to me. The complaint about not phoning people doesn't wash with me; I regularly get phone calls from them regarding stuff that they've recieved on trade that they think I might be interested in and most of the time I am. Once they get to know you and understand your needs (and have determined that you aren't a flake) all you have to do is let them know what to look out for and if such a thing shows up they phone you. Thanks to their consideration I have bought a bunch of very affordable horns for a fraction of what I would have got them for had I have just looked around normally. They also try to be competitive price-wise; they don't always beat the competition's prices but in my experience they try and they are up front about it. Also in my experience if they don't know about what you're asking about they admit it and ask someone who does. They also hire musicians, which doesn't sound that weird until you realise that musicians always want time off to tour etc. which is a huge pain in the ass to a big company that likes to keep the retail ball rolling; when I worked at a record store in Toronto years ago my boss told me "I would have never hired you if I knew you were a musician; they're too much of a headache". - Sat, 21 Feb 2004 8:24am

I like to try out gear there myself , But I dont seem to purchase a whole lot because of the price compared to internet sites.
when it comes to guitars there are only a hand few that are set good enough for me .
So if you do buy a guitar off the internet in may not play the same as you would have tried because of the action set.
But you can probably get it set to your liking from ruffus or yourself. I love that 65 reissu statocaster sunburst down thier for $2500 for instance ,it plays like a dream.
I also tried out them line 6 guitars and was impressed
but the price is about 25% higher than internet after U.S. currency and shipping has been included ..
compared line 6 guitar u.s. $650 U.S & shipping
L&M sale price $1199 ,marked down from $1600
I dont think it cost $400 to ship a guitar to Vancouver Island. Sorry L&M.
We need a walmart guitar center on the island . - Sun, 22 Feb 2004 10:09am

ebay, line 6 auction watch but you can also buy it now/new.
This guy has got lots of good gear cheap 814-371-8047
he left a # for serious buyers and ships anywhere...
I didnt now that i cant buy from musicians freind I guess i will have to try that sometime. I think there are a lot of stores down south blowing these guitars out for new gear coming in and putting them on ebay. Also there are a lot of places that say U.S. only but they will ship to canada after you email or talk to them. The only problem that I would have with that is there is not likely a 1 year warrantee or have the guitar action set up properly.
$799 U.S = $1050 can is that the magic number on that line 6 guitar.
Hey colin the last time I talked about a guitar I liked at L&m it sold in a week or 2 to someone else.
Ya, that steve via guitar was very nice for a $1000
So I will say that the 65 strat reissue is a kick ass guitar
but it cost $2500 out of my pocket book but it is a real good player. I wont say what line 6 guitar I like just in case it sells too. I will buy one but ??? when & where.
I should probaly sell some gear before I buy more. - Sun, 22 Feb 2004 4:39pm
