In Utero popped up lately and I gave it a listen....I can't beleive that actually happened. Albums like In Utero only happen once. For some of you, I imagine the fact it only "happened once" is a relief immeasurable, and just as impossible to put into words....and I understand totally. It's an ugly album of dirty, raw songs. HOWEVER, this album is to some of us (I know you are out there) the most important album Nirvana made as far as their discography goes (not including albums released post-mortem). And I apologize, but I feel the need to go on about it.

There was a distinct reason for the success of such an unruly raucous of an album; the timing. Some of the guitar tracks are out of tune.....does not matter, it was in time. Some of the solo's were sloppy and could never be repeated because they follow no distinguishable pattern..... does not matter THEY WERE IN TIME.

I love that they just went into a room and played their songs. No polishable anything. Fire up your fucking amps and beat the shit out of your drums for hours until you like what you hear back! And just for an extra kick, let's put in on the radio. Amazing.

PS Steve Albini is a name on a lot of records that I adore. They are the kind of records that make you want to thank the people responsible for constructing such a joy for everyday consumption....in person.
(even though *not* a Steve-A album, OK Computer is included in this category)

Apparently Guitar World ran a story on In Utero, calling it the most important album that came out 10+ years ago. I had to disagree with the article, even though it's a great album, I figure Bleach is way more important then that, they recorded it with little to no money, and it still has replay value to this day. - Tue, 13 Jan 2004 8:54pm

Oh yeah, ok I stand corrected. The radio plays more off "In Utero" then they do Bleach. It's probably a video thing, I'm not quite sure. - Wed, 14 Jan 2004 9:15am

"Dave and Krist whoever they are" Go home dude. Anyone who's that stupid and unaware of the people creating the actual album should NOT be commenting on it.

Awesome album, my fav Nirvana masterpiece to this day. Everytime I hear the huge crunch of Serve the Servants' intro I can't help but smile. It's beautiful in its grungy sound and never ceases to amaze me with its little tid bits of brilliance. 10 out of 10. - Thu, 22 Jan 2004 2:54pm

Bleach always has replay value, therefore it stands the test of time which is a good thing for any album. - Thu, 22 Jan 2004 7:22pm

Do I need to point out that Dave does not appear on Bleach, and wasn't a member of the band at the time? - Fri, 23 Jan 2004 7:25am

Dear god, your right :( Sigh, I feel less of a Nirvana fan now. Here's the story...

Bleach was recorded in 88. In May 1990, Chad was dropped from the band, and Mudhoney's Dan Peters was lent to them so they could record their last Sub Pop single, Sliver. They eventually recruited ex-scream member, Dave Grohl as their new drummer, the final Nirvana lineup was complete. At the same time, Sub Pop was having financial trouble so Nirvana were looking for a new record label, they eventually found DGC, the Geffen label and in January 1991 were paid $287,000 in advance to produce their next album which was to take them to world fame, Nevermind was released by Geffen in September 1991 along with the single, Smells Like Teen Spirit.

Wow, $287,000 paid for an album that made millions of dollars for Geffen. Go figure... - Fri, 23 Jan 2004 7:53am

i doubt that is all they got. That is probably how much they made to MAKE the album. Or maybe even a bonus to sign to their label. keep in mind there are royalties after the album is released. They don't make a HUGE sum because that is what touring is for. - Fri, 23 Jan 2004 5:31pm
