thats right!

those bands are the biggest pieces of shit I've ever heard in my life. If they don't peace out soon, I'm gonna fuckin letter bomb or anthrax their asses to Nunavut so they'll never be able to put out another mediocre song ever again!

Who gives a fuck wether some of them are canadian, even canadian bacon can taste like a mad cow's ass shincter.

I've never cared either way for Nickleback... until I heard their new single on the radio which gets my vote for "rockstar asshole of the year" lyric. Call me a boring hippy if you want but I for one am sick to death of hearing nouveau riche millionaires sing songs that have the word "hate" in them 50 times that include lines like "I like your pants around your knees, I like it when you say please" etc. And just in case there was any doubt, a (beautiful, young, female) friend of mine managed to get a job with 604 records awhile ago. When I asked her (on New Year's Eve) how her job was going she told me that she had had to quit because things were getting "too intense" around the office. Never trust a lawyer who tries to be like a hip rock star, never. - Tue, 6 Jan 2004 12:07pm

I think it's amazing that Nickelback's new song gets tons of air play considering it's about a prostitute and the big wigs at radio stations haven't figured it out! "Oh it's just another catchy hit song from Nickleback so it's ok!" ...Suuuuuurrreee it is! NOT! - Tue, 6 Jan 2004 2:09pm

It would most certainly be a bad idea for any "indie hipster" band to get their bank roll from 604. I mean, sometimes you just have to look at a situation and say...'nope, not for me. There are avenues other than The Kroeg. He's just a coorperation that knows Indie rock could make him a lot more money." Although...I suppose said band COULD release their records under the guise of some smaller COOLER indie label to keep itself from feeling too dirty.
I certainly hope THIS never happens. - Tue, 6 Jan 2004 2:30pm

It makes me laugh whenever I hear anybody getting all excited about some rockstar's record label showing interest in them. I call these "boutique" labels and often they are just a combination of tax shelter and ego stroke for the artists in question. And, most importantly, almost every one of them has proven to be a dismal failure. Labels like Apple, Rolling Stone, Paisley Park, Maverick, Track, Konk, Rocket, Swan Song and a million others all seem to come along hot on the coattails of the successful artist that spawns them, signs a few artists (mostly friends) put out a few albums (almost all of which are total stiffs) and flame out, not coincidently, about the same time that the founding artists career either goes south or their contract with the (major) sponsoring label expires. Of course some of these artists have hits despite this trend (Mary Hopkins,Peter Tosh, Kiki Dee, Dave Edmunds); after all, even a blind pig finds an acorn now and then, but they are usually few and far between. - Tue, 6 Jan 2004 3:24pm

I really dislike Nickelback's music, but what I hate even more is when people acuse bands of selling out or being frauds just because they are hugely popular and sell lots of records. I have respect for the fact that Nickelback does write their own songs, have not changed their style, and did work their way to get where they are (they were Vancouver Seeds winners if anybody remembers). *Where did nickleback sell out*

That blonde singing goof whoever he is, he tried to claim he's actually a metalhead outside of nickleback and dropped a few mellow metal band names that he liked, the one I remember being Opeth.

Or, like me, he has a VARIETY of music that he listens to. If you would watch some spotlights on nickelback, you would see that he absolutely loves his bands music, is playling exactally what he wants to play and is more dedicated to his band than any one on this entire message board. I remember one of his quotes: " people are sometimes like, dont take it personally, but i dont really like your band, your cool people, but i dont like your music. To me, what could be more personal then that, Nickelback isnt just some rock band, its my life. All my time and energy and devotion goes into this band and there is nothing more personal then dissing my band, its like dissing my life". That is just about an exact quote from him. Now dont fucking feed me bullshit like he's either a sell out or a poser, he is 100% neither of those. Stop being jelous. - Thu, 8 Jan 2004 10:14am

Sure I'll take their money, but shit i'll take Oprah's money too, we all want to be rich, but wanting to be nickleback, eeegh no way.

Someone who is metal, what I saw wasn't a casual reference, the guy was going of about how he was really metal under all the nickleback, when yet I don't buy it.

What is a metalhead?
To you, it's someone who enjoys metal.

To us "Metalheads" it's someone who lives for metal.

Kinda like there and they're..

When you portray yourself as metal to a certain magnitude, theres allways the question of weather or not all the others who do so feel you meet the standard to call yourself "a metalhead" in the same pile as the others.

I don't think nickleback dude is, thats all.

It's my opinion, based on what I have seen which true enough was short, but he sure as hell was vauge yet spoke as if that was the end to the subject...

I dont remember the broadcast all that much, my sister called me up to laugh at him *shes a big nickleback fan too by the way*

Kind of a murky definition. So a metalhead is someone who "lives for metal"? Fair enough. Is that to the exclusion of anything else? I mean, I live for music in general and I really like a lot of metal, amongst other types of music. If I tell you I also like Vivaldi, Miles Davis and Merle Haggard does that make me not quite a metal head? Is it the exclusive club that it sometimes appears to be? Posters on this board make it seem so. Otherwise there wouldn't be posts with subjects like "best non-metal albums of 2003" (as if metal was the only music worth REALLY caring about) and other posters wouldn't be getting mad at me for invading "their" metal posts. - Fri, 9 Jan 2004 6:09pm

Zipgunn, you missed the essence of what I was getting at there...

You have to be all metal to know the lingo, and it seems like a club because we tend to speak to eachother in the same fashion, if I told you to rott for example, would you be able to differentiate between insult or friendly gesture?

My guess is only by context, any number of the people I consider metal would surely know what I was getting at in question form for example, same goes with alot of related things, such as what is "a metalhead" and what WE would referr to as a "metalhead" , it's a turn of phrase, esoteric is the word I can best use to describe it...

I can most certainly see why the questions would arise though, but it's as simple as, the people who live for metal, know their metal and demonstrate it, if not done to par, the assumption has to be, you think youre metal, on the right road sure, but you're not there yet, if thats a case, you'll probably encounter a little protest from metalheads when claiming that title as the description of yourself...

Saying, "I'm a bit of a metalhead, I listen to judas preist and metallica ALL THE TIME" - thats fine with "elitests" , what might not go over so well is: "I'm a metalhead for sure, I listen to slayer AND sepultura!!"

The line has to be differentiated, and if you're not on the side I am, you probably would have never known,
Socially complex, or unneccessary, I don't know which, all I know is, it works for me...

[Edit - Forgot to answer a question of yours - "does this exclude everything else? - Well no, but it does tend to, most metalheads find in metal what others do in other genres, you might be able to say in a sence, instead of nickleback, I listen to Opeth...
But no, I think you'll find almost every metalhead has certain peices of music they like and respect outside of "metal", but back to the esotericness, that may only be because we find it "metal" - probably meaning it contains musical qualities we see in our favourite metal genres, but certainly a metalhead can like other forms of music and still be considered "metal" by the rest] - Fri, 9 Jan 2004 10:35pm

Ross... yes, all musicains are in the same boat. But how can you say you never judge bands by their tunes... uhh.. isnt that missing the whole point of having a band... i listen to some bands id absolutely hate if i met them, but hey, im prolly never gonna meet them, so fuck, why would i care what their character is like? i care what their music is like, thats why i listen to bands, for their music, not for their character. If i was ever to tour with bands, then character would come into play, but just randomly poping a cd in my discman.. its ALL about the music, hell, i like the character of some bands that id fucking never listen to, cause even tho they got good character, their music sucks.. - Sat, 10 Jan 2004 10:05am

true, but not everyone feels that way man. there HAS to be more to this than just music. if I find out some shit about a dick in a band that i don't like, then chances are i'll stop listening to the album. alot of dudes, me included, listen to certain stuff just because we may know the band personally or whatever and like them as [people. I've also been playing in bands long enough to know that being a decent person and going about things the right way by showing respect and community is a way better promotional tool that just a good cd ever could be. everyone has their own preferance, it just takes experience to figure out what works best for you. Besides, being in a band is 99 pecent communication and 1 percent actual music. You HAVE to be able to relate somehow to ALL musicians on a personal level or you paint yourself in a corner really fucking quick. I know, in the earlier days i did that. - Sat, 10 Jan 2004 10:13am

i listen to obscene amounts of metal, in fact i'm listening to Napalm Death as i'm writing this. But if i went to like, college or university, got a good paying job with a nice house and whatnot does that make me not a metalhead? I don't even have long hair. I get really confused with all this "I'm a metalhead. You're a poser." stuff. - Sat, 10 Jan 2004 11:16am

"Hey , Ddsanger, I guess I've always called Metalheads something else. Where I'm from we call them........ teenagers."

Funny, the majority of full on metalheads that I know are late 20's or over 30, and quite a few in their 40's ( and discovering new bands every week, of the metal genre ) Ive connected with metal fans all over the world, and this is the case everywhere.

People will stereotype all genre's of music based on urban myth and what their friends are saying.

And if they are ALL teenagers, why is it that places like the Commodore Ballroom consistently sell out large metal tours? You have to be 19 to get in there and that place holds how many? 1500? - Sat, 10 Jan 2004 11:28am

Ross, ya, i see your point, but, for me at least, i dont listen to bands just cause they have good people in them. And on the other end i listen to bands that have members that are complete assholes, and ya know why? cause they have good music. If i was gonna hang out with them, id prolly hate them, but hey, im just listening to their music, and id rather listen to a really good band that may be kinda assholeish then a mediocre band that are all really good guys.

"I've also been playing in bands long enough to know that being a decent person and going about things the right way by showing respect and community is a way better promotional tool that just a good cd ever could be."

Thats funny, cause.. ive seen alot of stuff from you guys on here, and uhh.. respect DEFINETALLY has not been one of them. Ive seen the complete opposite alot, but uhh, basically, thats exactally the oposite of what youve proven your character to be. - Sat, 10 Jan 2004 12:10pm

I, personally, would classify good music as music that has other parts besides, SCREAMING and guys wailing on their guitars so hard you cant even tell or even wanna know what their playing. Heres a word of the day for ya, "melody". I listen to music such as, finger eleven, Closure, 40 foot echo, Nickelback (ooo, aaa, yes Nickelback), linkin park, armchair cynics, limestone, boyhitscar, slurpy mundae, breach of trust, finch, adema, disturbed, 12 stones, fuel, silverchair, filter.. etc.. tons of shit. Do i think its the best music in the world and all other music sucks?? nope. do i think people who listen to death metal are deaf idiots listing to untalended shit music?? nope. i dont care what you listen to, you can listen to the backstreet boys for all i care, fuck, im not gonna start a post about it even if you do.

I was layin in bed last night and i had an idea... how about, even just for 1 day, we all at least TRY and act our age on here. whattaya think?? - Sat, 10 Jan 2004 12:29pm

"You HAVE to be able to relate somehow to ALL musicians on a personal level or you paint yourself in a corner really fucking quick. I know, in the earlier days i did that."

Dont get all defensive and aggresive in your reply, cause im seriously just wondering this: why should all musicians have to be able to relate on a personal level?? just cause we both play music and both have bands, why should that mean i have to be able to relate to you or anyone els or like them?? Just cause we are musicians doesnt mean we have ANYTHING els in common..It should be just about the music, like.. say (for example, im not sayin i dont like ya) that i dont like you or your band, why should that mean we cant play a show together?? like.. just keep it about the music, each play your set, and.. i dunno, live and let live. anyways, i must be going right now my ride is here, just wondering what you think about that?? - Sat, 10 Jan 2004 12:38pm

That's the beauty of music. I've been in situations with musicians that didn't speak English and I only had a poor grasp of their spoken language. The ability to play music brought us together as people in a way that nothing else can. It gave me the opportunity to realize I might have more in common with them than I first thought. - Sun, 11 Jan 2004 2:31pm

Well, ignoring probably the stupidest bitchfest I've ever read on here, I'll go way back to Bearhead's first post....

About indie bands signing to labels like 604.... The Organ is signed to a joint deal between Mint and 604..... Mint, the way-indie from Vancouver, and 604, Chad Kroeger's ego stroker....... I don't get it either, and I dont' know the details of the agreement, but I suspect that 604 handles distribution and maybe promotion, and Mint essentailly acts as management/lawyer for the band..... - Mon, 12 Jan 2004 12:45pm

Mint has the street-cred that 604 covets therefore the curious deal with the Organ. Mint's promo is a lot better than 604's too. I actually can't figure this one out. - Tue, 13 Jan 2004 8:24am

Look Nickelback appeals to musical virgins, and theres nothing wrong with that. They've found a formula that works, but they've used it OVER AND OVER again.

Simply use Drop D powerchords during chorus, add in arpeggio'd 5th chords during verse, toss in an eddie vedder wanna-be, rinse and repeat.... do this 12 times and you've got a Theory Of A Nickelfault CD.

I wouldnt mind the band so much if they would just diversify their sound a bit, lose the arrogance because they arnet good enough to deserve that sort of respect. - Sun, 18 Jan 2004 5:34pm

Well........people can choose what suits them in this world..what they buy, say ,act is completley up to them...everyone has to work...if you can love your job good for you...if you can work least amount as possible.. even better.Im in a band in town that is working with 604...I dont know these people well... but when I sit at work hoping for a lottery ticket or marrying Paris hilton I quickly snap out of it as my boss starts to yell at me....Then I am reminded...I have an opportunity...no its not the most amazing one but it is my chance..when you start out you start at the bottom of the food chain...if you have tenacity, patience, and focus maybe you might get a little bit of what it is any of us musicians are looking for....a reaction to our efforts......if you truly want it ,your going to have to chase it ...its not waiting for you...Id rather be a fucking idiot that got burned than sit back with my arms folded saying...."Id rather work at a gas station than take a chance with 604"...cause you know what? that gas station is waiting with open arms - Mon, 19 Jan 2004 8:22am

Well put. I mean, no matter how you look at it, your still better off than you were before, with 604. Even if you get nowhere with them, its still going to gain you some recognition during the period that you do endorse yourself under their name. I mean, send a cd to a major magazine as "the band from Victoria" vs. "the band on 604 Records" and you know that they are going to do a feature or review on you quicker if you throw the 604 name around. So whats the worse thing that can happen here.. you dont get US distro, so 604 drop you, and your on your own again. At least you gain some notoriety and connections in that timeframe that you do work with 604. - Mon, 19 Jan 2004 9:45am

I totally agree with ML7 Mike here.
This band worked hard and got noticed by someone. Good for them, if they continue to work hard they will get noticed by others as well. It may not be you..so what? You think your opinion will have any effect on any of these bands? What, your not gonna buy their CD, again so what? For every one of you who will never buy a NB disc, ten kids from somewhere else will.....
Why would you take the time to rip AC or 604?
I saw Moby one time and during a quiet part of one of his songs some guy yells at him,"you fucking suck", and Moby stops the show and asks the dude, "Hey man why would you take time out of your life, spend money on a ticket, to tell me I suck"?
In life there will be people, that put away their fear and try to achieve their goals , whatever they may be. There will also be people who will never try to do anything but keep eveyone on the same level as them, it's a crutch and an excuse not to achieve anything yourself.
Fuck all these jealous bitches, they are a waste of time. It's like listening to the opinion of the guy who bags my groceries.
