Shawn User Info... | Nowadays I wouldn't give Sentenced the time of day. But this is their first release, demo included. Sentenced used to be good. Deffinately not that melancholy goth stuff they are doing now. This is old skool death metal. Fans of sodom and old malevolent creation will dig it. Production aint the greatest but the song writting is awesome. This is like what Bloodbath was trying to accomplish on Ressurection Through Carnage. Thanks to Riot in the Dungeon for this one. - Thu, 2 Oct 2003 9:48am
Akylore User Info... | No shit?!?! Malevolent Creation's "Retribution" is still one of the best death metal albums in history, period, no fucking contest. Extremely spiteful vocals: (Slaughter of Innocence - "DIE MOTHER FUCKER!!!") Wicked heavy riffs with catchy grooves, precise drumming with various fills, it's all good. I still remember buying it in my high-school days in 1992....fuck I'm getting old.... Oh shit, yeah, should I be reviewing Sentenced here?! Well, anyways, I'm not really into Sentenced either but if it's in the realm of earlier Malevolent Creation then I'll have to check it out.... - Thu, 2 Oct 2003 11:43am
Neil User Info... | They only did 2 good ones, the one mentioned above and the fantastic 'North from here'. You can't be metal and say 'the sun won't shine on me without your love.' C'mon. - Thu, 2 Oct 2003 12:06pm
Shawn User Info... | What is this I hear about Malevolent Creation/Rob Barrett being all white power?? Is this true?? - Thu, 2 Oct 2003 6:11pm
Neil User Info... | Does it really matter? - Fri, 3 Oct 2003 6:57am
Shawn User Info... | fuck yeah it matters! I dont want to be supporting a band if its all for the fucking Klan!! I am strongly anti-racist and by supporting a band with ideas like that I would be a total hypocrite. - Fri, 3 Oct 2003 9:06am
Neil User Info... | That's your perogative of course. Stuff like that has never stopped me from listening to bands. I don't like the messages of Believer or Vital Remains, but I can't imagine not listening to their fantastic music. This genre is all about the 'extreme'. Your going to run ito some extreme beliefs if you stick with it long enough. But in the end, it's all up to you. - Fri, 3 Oct 2003 11:52am
Akylore User Info... | Well, here's an "official press statement" by Paul Schwartz (Chronicles of Chaos Zine ): "Staying on the subject of lyrics, I quiz Phil about _Eternal_ and one particular song, "They Breed", with which the band had a few problems. "The song was basically about scum. It didn't really point a finger at any certain race, but at the end of the song it said the word it said, "you fucking nigger"." To many, this made the band racist, but Phil explains the context: "In reality, [now] "nigger" just means a fuckin' slacker." But the word's appearance wasn't planned, at least not by Phil. "It was such a violent fuckin' song and Jason was supposed to say ["you fucking gave us"], but we were doing the vocal tracks and he just did it and it just sounded so much more convincing." Convincing, but maybe not helpful: "We did have some problems with it and as soon as that happened I said to him: "That's it for any kind of shit like that." I think a lot of people took it the wrong way." Phil makes sure to explicitly state: "We're not racist." Whatever Phil may have said at the time, these problems were not to go away, and things came to a head last year while the band was on tour in Germany. "Jason was wearing a KKK shirt [on stage]." The result? "People started freaking out, throwing shit at him and flipping him off. I told him [before the show] that if he wore the shirt I'd fuckin' kill him, and when I left the venue, man, people were throwing bottles at me, we had all our merchandise returned, people were calling us "Nazis" and "scum", they wanted to fuckin' kick our ass!" As you might imagine, Phil didn't take this kindly; the result... "When I got onto the bus and he was fuckin' laughing about it, I fuckin' beat the living shit out of him." This would explain Jason's absence from Malevolent Creation. "When we got home, he quit. He couldn't live with the fact that I did that to him." Continuing on the subject of his former bandmate, Phil says: "The kid is fuckin' unstable, he does a lot of stupid things and says a lot of stupid things that in turn made me look like a fuckin' idiot, so the only way to resolve it was for me to punch his head in. And it worked and I haven't talked to him since. " So there you go. The 'Eternal' lyric is pretty fucked up in my opinion, if any of my members wanted to do that 'even though it meant something different' I'd tell them no fucking way. But then again it was Jason who threw in the lyric. And it's cool to see that the Phil set Jason straight with the whole t-shirt deal. So fortunately I'll still support 'Retribution' in this case, knowing that the incident was about an individual as compared to the whole band, but I hear Shawn about not wanting to support certain bands. I mean, look at EXTOL, their music is wicked but it's a damn shame because I just can't support christian metal, no fucking way. - Fri, 3 Oct 2003 12:12pm
Neil User Info... | Good for you. - Fri, 3 Oct 2003 12:45pm
Shawn User Info... | Thanks for clearing that shit up. What a fucking mad man. At least I can still respect Malevolent Creation. Unfortunately Jason has given them a bad name, hence what this thread has turned into. So i'll still listen to Ten Commandmen - Fri, 3 Oct 2003 12:58pm
SentencedtoBurn User Info... | I got his 2 CD set (Shadows and North From Here) at A/B Sound last year for $19! Not really a huge fan of Shadows, but North From Here is a fucking triumphant album. I've been told by a few people to steer clear of their newer stuff, is it really that big of a departure from these 2 discs? Anyways, I just got 6 tracks off the new Macabre album....and HOLY FUCK does it rule. Murder Metal is the title and it's by far the best Macabre album I've ever heard. Still the same hilarious riffage and vocals, but with way more groove and better riff writing. Check it out. - Sat, 4 Oct 2003 12:12pm
