DTjackson User Info... | I think System of a Down's Mezmerize is a strong contender. That's the only album that's really blown me away. We'll see how Hypnotize comes across in November although the first single has me a bit worried it will be a softer affair. - Mon, 10 Oct 2005 4:11pm
Peter Gardner User Info... | Although it was a greatest hits, Matthew Good's "In A Coma" did have some new stuff, but the re-workings of the old stuff was some of the best stuff he's ever done. So there's that. The new Constantines album is excellent. As well as both the Iron and Wine albums that came out this year. Patrick Wolf put out a new album and it totally blew away his first, and is damn good. I also really like the new 30 Seconds To Mars disc. Then of course the new Broken Social Scene CD is out tomorrow...which I'm sure could very well be a contender. - Mon, 10 Oct 2005 8:08pm
Haden User Info... | I tried to listen to Patrick Wolf, but I didn't really dig it. I can't really understand the deal with him. - Mon, 10 Oct 2005 8:32pm
Mutilashawn User Info... | I don't usually listen to much new stuff BUT Inquistion - The Magnificent Glorification of Lucifer and Hate Eternal - I, Monarch are the best 2005 releases that I have gotten a hold of so far. there's probably more to come, that's just what immediately comes to mind right now. - Tue, 11 Oct 2005 2:32pm
Wheate User Info... | Sufjan Stevens - Illinois The National - Alligator Spoon - Gimme Fiction New Pornographers - Twin Cinema Wintersleep - ST Innaway - ST I dunno, just a couple that kick ass. - Tue, 11 Oct 2005 8:49pm

_Griphin_ User Info... | I saw that Matthew Good CD today, there's like 2 versions, the normal CD and the one that comes with a DVD with all his videos on it. - Tue, 11 Oct 2005 10:08pm
k8 User Info... | Broken Social Scene - s/t (& the EP) The New Pornographers - Twin Cinema Immaculate Machine - Ones And Zeros I really liked what I've heard of the newest Sufjan Stevens, and Underwater Cinematographer by The Most Serene Republic is good too. Same with the new Buck 65 CD and the new Metric one. - Tue, 11 Oct 2005 11:44pm
Peter Gardner User Info... | Yea, the second Deluxe version of the Matt Good package has two CDs as well as a DVD. The second CD has the new "Rooms" recordings on there. One of the best things he's ever done, hands down. The new Broken Social Scene CD is excellent. Picked it up today. - Wed, 12 Oct 2005 12:08am
The One After Two User Info... | Griphin, you need to get the deluxe or don't bother with the new Matt Good. Its the second disc where all the gold is. Some good picks above. The Most Serene Republic is good, but I expected better and I don't listen to it much anymore. I like that new Metric. Metric might make a top ten for at the end of the year. It'll need a few more spins at home before I make that call. I love that track, "Poster of a Girl." - Wed, 12 Oct 2005 10:56am
_Griphin_ User Info... | I totally agree with you, you need the deluxe set for not only the Rooms recordings, but the DVD with videos. And while were on the subject of "must have" CDs, also be sure to look for the new AC/DC-Back in Black Dual Disc. :) - Wed, 12 Oct 2005 12:23pm
Peter Gardner User Info... | Ah yea, I forgot to mention the new Metric as well. I quite like it better than their first. It's got a rougher more rock based feel to it. Some other ones that have come out this year earlier that I forgot about include; Bloc Party - Silent Alarm Bright Eyes - Wide Awake It's Morning (go ahead, laugh, but this CD is killer) David Usher - If God Had Curves - Wed, 12 Oct 2005 12:52pm

DTjackson User Info... | I agree the new Metric is better than the first. Still, I'm not sure if it's the best of the year. Metric seems like one of those bands that are full of much more potential down the line. I just got My Morning Jacket - Z a couple days ago and it's pretty good. Lots of variety. Trippy. - Sat, 15 Oct 2005 7:24pm

The One After Two User Info... | My new Propagandhi is in the mail so maybe that one will make my list. Listening to the new Death Cab... I like better than the critics said I should. Bright Eyes, forgot that came out in January of 2005. I liked Digital Ash in a Digital Urn. Steve great picks! I like that Decemberists album so much too. I always forget what a great record that is until it fires up in an iTunes mix or something random... then I go, oh wow. - Mon, 17 Oct 2005 11:40am

If you dig twee, it will make you smile. Guaranteed. What I've heard of the new Wolf Parade album sounds promising as well. Same goes for the Constantines and Broken Social Scene - oh, how I long for the days when I could actually afford to buy records! The SS Cardiacs released a pretty neat record this year as well - Fear the Love. Worth checking out! - Thu, 20 Oct 2005 6:44pm

Sati User Info... | I barely ever get anything to listen to, so I'd only name my friends' bands. Its just those and the very odd thing that comes my way that I ever hear! . but MY friends' stuff would come out on top anyway :) One thing that was cool though, was those fantomas leaks with the individual recordings for every day of the month. I just liked how we got to hear where their heads were at IMMEDIATELY since it was up on the internet within a few weeks (if that). Killer way to share the experience with your fans. I think thats probably why Nev's so into this potential audio retailing thing.. not every band has the bux to do what fantomas did. - Fri, 21 Oct 2005 9:15pm

Will User Info... | the Gorillaz album has to be a stron contender although its got a frustratin track order, the first 4 tracks hugely fail to captivate but the middle 5-6 tracks are great. Other than that, i've noticed that this year was among the rare years where I was feeling more nostalgic, and less obsessed in finding the next interesting thing in new music, so i'm gonna refrain from a top ten list. Off the top of my head though, i'm glad to admit that I got into BLoc Party, Death from above 1979, and Sufjan Stevens lately as a tilt towards alien territory for me, indie-rock. I wanted to comment on a poster earlier regarding SOAD. I absolutely love the new single "Hypnotize" and I have to disagree with that poster on whether the song is heavy enough. SOAD is hit and miss with me but that song is full of energy...I welcome that kind of raw emotion from anything I can find nowadays, its seemingly an increasingly rarer trait in modern music. It trips me out as well how big they are considering their quirky, and relatively abrasive style. Good on them. I welcom them to explore as much as they want too, they have the potential for it...and they shouldn't listen to purist metal fans as they're just impossible to please (i;m not saying that DTjackson fit under that category either) . Some bands need to stay consistent, and SOAD for me makes me think that they have the potential to pull off anything they want, and I applaud the fact such a bizarre type of band is excepted by the pop-world, even though they don't really mean to write pop songs. I saw them live and became a fan. Other mentions? I liked Mastodon, Beck and a surprisingly large chunk of the Death Cab album. I'm blanking right now, but like I said, I was more in a nostalgic mood the past year, so I don't feel I have alot of deserved merit it takes for the "necessary" critique thing this time out...trying not to be such a OCB mmusic nazi lol! Local stuff i'm quite impressed with though, there is a feeling in the air of confidence and professionalism amongst many bands right now...gotta love that. - Mon, 14 Nov 2005 3:37am
_Griphin_ User Info... | One album I give a thumbs up to that was released in 92 (I think): Butthole Surfers-Independant Worm Saloon, produced by John Paul Jones, this album is fuckin' brilliant! Probably one of the few Butthole Surfer albums I can actually get into listening. According to the review left by Janitor-X on CDNow.com: Rolling Stone Magazine once slammed the Butth0le Surfers for being "so genuine in its depravity" and called them scary because "the weirdness is much too real to qualify as mere dadaist showmanship." Those comments are absolutely true and a great reason to love the band. The Butth0le Surfers releases before this album were tailor made to sound like bad acid trips. They took the "peace and love" romanticism out of psychedelic music and replaced with sickness and fear. It was a more realistic approach to the true LSD experience. Those albums must be experienced at least once or twice just for the shock value. However, none of those albums are the kind you would want to listen to every day. "Independent Worm Saloon" is an album you could listen to every day. The Butth0le Surfers hit the perfect balance between weirdness and catchy, hard punk rock. The weirdness is delivered mostly by vocalist Gibby Haynes with his outlandish lyrics and freaky voice. The music will occasionally get as weird as the lyrics, but on the average it's just one catchy riff after another. The frantic freak out songs "Who Was in My Room Last Night," "Goofy's Concern," and "Some Dispute Over T-shirt Sales" are the highlights followed closely by "Alcohol" and "Dust Devil." The rest is not filler by any means, as it holds the flow of the album together in either mellow "cool down" or comical way. It peaks and dips just like a perfect, drug fueled live performance. There are some amazing things about the Butth0le Surfers that cannot be ignored. First, they were from Texas which is a place that clearly does not value or encourage such extreme artistic expression that this band has produced. Also, the drug possession laws there are extremely harsh which makes them all the more fearless in their expression. Second, they ended up becoming mainstream which was once thought to be impossible for a band with a name and sound like theirs. While Nirvana and the alternative explosion in the `90's may have opened the door for the Butth0le Surfers, it was amazing that they survived the `80's underground and emerged on the radio despite their name and reputation. They must make great music. - Mon, 14 Nov 2005 1:19pm
DTjackson User Info... | Right, I'm definitely not a metal purist. I've been pretty bored with metal these days. System Of A Down keeps it interesting. It breaks away from the predictible shredding I hear so much of. Hypnotize has grown on me a bit...it's still an odd choice when you place it beside BYOB as a first single. When they played "Attack!" [at least, I believe that was the song's title] in Vancouver I thought for sure that would be the single. It just seems like they picked it because they needed that mellow single after BYOB and Question!. - Mon, 14 Nov 2005 11:48pm

Nik Olaz User Info... | one album that will slip past 99.9% of people's ears is Kayo Dot's "Dowsing Anemone With Copper Tongue". Ignore the ignorance that you'd think this would be a "metal" album coming from me. However, this band brings together probably the best sound i've heard in ages. It's utterly consuming and beautiful soundscapes coming from an almost orchestra like group. I highly recommend someone looking for a difference in music to check this album out. - Sat, 24 Dec 2005 2:03am
