film programer User Info... | The Satan Macnuggit Video Collecitve and Shock Corridor Cinema presents: from Toronto THE RECYCLED CINEMA TOUR featuring guest curator Jonathan Culp. No Cinemascope means no Cineplex: the Satan Macnuggit Video Road Show takes the low road, visiting over 40 bars, barns and back rooms from Dawson City, YK to St. Johns, NF in August-November 2003. Come and check out the cutting, slicing and dicing edge of Canadian indie cinema! Thursday, September 11th 9:00 PM @THE FIFTY FIFTY ARTS COLLECTIVE 416 Craigflower Rd. (kitty corner to "chicken on the run") $5 Satan Macnuggit Popular Arts is proud to feature "Recycled Cinema" an innovative two-hour touring programme of subversive animations, crafty lo-fi shorts, and culture jamming collages. At running times ranging from 60 seconds to 18 minutes, and with budgets averaging under $100, these films are healthily REDUCED from the average Hollywood behemoth. They RE-USE old technology like the VHS camcorder and Super 8 film, for fun and economy. And they RECYCLE imagery from mass media in supremely satirical collage pieces that you won't see on the tube any time soon. The 18 films in the programme pit cardboard-box robots against crazed motivational speakers, dyke superheroes against trailer trash transvestites, and dum-dum presidents against humanity. THE PROGRAM * Asterisk means video is available for purchase. Production formats indicated. CANADAS # 1 AIR GUITARIST SAVES THE DAY * Chris Mills, 2002, 3 minutes, super 8 A hillbilly wins the lottery, a lusty couple is ensured safe sex and an outrageous parking fine is ripped up - all because of rockin licks. CAPTAIN DO-GOODER IN HELP THE NEEDY * Jonathan Culp, 2002, 6 minutes, super 8 CDG is an ineffectual liberal superhero whos just trying to help, but the proletarians he meets have other ideas. Modern silent slapstick with an anarchic twist. COMPLIANCE CULTURE * Bennett Jones-Philips, 2001, 15 minutes, Betacam An evil motivational speaker gets scarier and more absurd as he goes along. In editing this spew down to its essence, Bennett makes something useful out of his day job. WORK * Meesoo Lee, 2001, 1 minute, Mini DV Its Meesoo vs. the machine. He shows it whos boss∑ PLASTICMAN AND THE JUSTICE LEAGUE * Jonathan Culp, 2002, 16 minutes, found footage Using educational films, how-to videos, Hollywood chestnuts and news footage, Jonathan disses the post-September 11 war on terror, morons trying to pass as leaders, and eye-for-an-eye economics. ziggy User Info... | perhaps in theory but these films do not bash you over the head with lefty discourse; more about tackling inane copyright infringement laws in visual terms. some of the material is visually stunning despite its goal to highlight cultural objects as fodder for artistic material. it may be of interest to remember all ideas are born out of cultural experience and thus borrowed from something that came before. alright then. - Wed, 10 Sep 2003 4:42am | ||
