film programer User Info... | The Oregon Dept of Kick Ass presents: LUCKY BUM FILM TOUR: Bill Daniel and Vanessa Renwick on tour with experimental-documentary video work. The Fifty Fifty Arts Collective 416 Craigflower Road Thursday, July 10th 9PM $5 Portland-based artists, Vanessa Renwick and Bill Daniel, continue their road-dogging, 60-city tour of the U.S. and Canada with a program featuring about a dozen of Renwick's short films and videos, plus Daniel's hobo camp/video installation. Bill Daniel presents his "The Girl on the Train in the Moon", a hobo campfire/video installation that is a record of his 12-year investigation into the secret world of freight riding and hobo graffiti. The practice of "chalking up", drawing one's moniker on boxcars, is a 100-year-old tradition among tramps and rail workers. Today, this art form has been taken up by a new breed of young artists who are adding another layer of images and reference to the rolling steel canvases. The installation environment is constructed to resemble a hobo camp scene, complete with a campfire and moon, which are actually rear-projected screens that flicker with images of freight-hopping trips and interviews. Featured artists include Colossus of Roads, Bozo Texino, and a tribute to the banjo-playing Matokie Slaughter. Renwick's 70-minute, ten-film program, GO BABY GO, begins with her early experimental and activist films and concludes with her latest documentary video "Richart", a funny, frenetic and revelatory portrait of Richard Tracy, Centralias famed outsider artist. Renwick portrayal of Richart benefits from their 12-year friendship, which allows the audience a prized visit to the artists secret basement studio and a glimpse of the artists other side. Renwicks adventurous and raw earlier work includes "CROWDOG"-- shot on super-8 during a 9-month barefoot hitchhiking trip across the US. The film records her visit to the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota to investigate the remnants of the FBI's "Reign of Terror" on the American Indian Movement. Currently Renwick is making a 16mm essay entitled "CRITTER", about the reintroduction of gray wolves into the modern West. ziggy User Info... | this one i'm uncertain about. will the films be overly political or do they involve some humour? the hobo camp theme seems like it could go either way. - Mon, 7 Jul 2003 1:21am | ||
