Message Board > Up n' Coming! (aka Shameless Promotion) > Shock Corridor Cinema presents the second film in a series on the work of Jordorowsky: The Holy Mountain (1973). Tuesday, June 10th |
film programer | Shock Corridor Cinema continues its brief retrospective of the films of Alexandoro Jordorowsky. Tuesday June, 10th. 9:00 pm @ the fifty fifty arts collective 416 Craigflower Rd. (across from Chicken on the Run) $2 383-5144 THE HOLY MOUNTAIN (1973). Jordorowsky's surrealist style and fondness for visual representations of obscure texts made him an icon of the counter-culture movement of the late 60s and early 70s, earning him the admiration of the likes of Dennis Hopper, John Lennon and film/cultural critic, Pauline Kael. Despite his popularity, many felt Jodorowskys films were a product of the time, work that wouldnt be appreciated outside of the 60s underground movements that nurtured the young artist. Holy Mountain is Jordorowsky's most daring work. Like El Topo, this film is often considered as one of the few celluloid mind-roaster of all time! An epic hallucination crawling with wall-to-wall weirdness, in which Christ, The White Master (Alex), and a pack of symbolic thieves (each named after a planet, and each representing a different ill of society) link up to raid The Holy Mountain and steal its secrets. This pic would cost a billion dollars to make nowadays, and its first half hour of in-your-face imagery (crucified, skinned animals; storm troopers; cripples; flowers blooming from stigmata; exploding toads - perhaps the precurser to Magnolia's preposterouos finale) is like raw Fellini on prime Peyote. Outrageous, pretentious, unbelievable, and unforgettable. - Sun, 8 Jun 2003 1:37am
F. Fellini | I saw it at Cinecenta awhile back; it's a classic art film, that's for sure. - Sun, 8 Jun 2003 2:04pm

Jai Joans | I think that they still have El Topo at Pic-a-flic. I rented it there last summer. You have to check out Santa Sangre too. I know that they have that one at Yo Video in Oak Bay. - Sun, 8 Jun 2003 10:02pm
The Mad Subwoofer User Info... | I watched Santa Sangre from Pic-a-flik ages back when i was all young and impressionable. That's the one with the burly fellah and his two swords I'm thinking...? just that the one scene will always stick in my head, the "disarming" and all. - Mon, 9 Jun 2003 3:27am
Gman | I am looking forward to this movie! Should I be doing psychedelics beforehand, or is the movie psychedelic enough already? Gman - Mon, 9 Jun 2003 10:40am
