Message Board > Up n' Coming! (aka Shameless Promotion) > John Waters' FEMALE TROUBLE + THE RINGER tonite at 50/50 |
film programer User Info... | Tuesday, January 25th; 8pm. $2. Shock Corridor Cinema presents, John Waters' FEMALE TROUBLE (1974) coupled with the finest ephemeral/educational film on the dangers of drug use committed to celluloid, ever: THE RINGER (1972), initially sponsored by Pepsi Cola. FEMALE TROUBLE is the follow up to Waters' infamous PINK FLAMINGOS. Unlike much of Waters' work from the early 70s, FEMALE TROUBLE exploits the luxuries of a large budget, original music, set design and a tightly wound narrative that illustrates the infancy of Waters' sophistication as a legitimate filmmaker. the film follows the crime spree of its central protagonist Dawn Davenport, a malaise triggered by a xmas morning gone ary when Dawn does not receive any black cha cha heels in her pile of gifts. Divine is at her absolute best playing dual roles [Dawn and her rapist, providing perhaps the finest cinematic metaphor surrounding the notion of screwing oneself]. This film features the motley stockpile of misfits Waters' featured in most of his earlier films (Divine, David Lochary, Edith Massey, Mink Stole, etc.) most of them up to no good as they contribute to the film's central theme of femininity and its implicit victimization in a commercial culture run by sleazy men and bankrupt values, values that only seem to come from Baltimore. A coming of age tale for the 21st century that is way ahead of its trash cinema competitors, both in spirit and in taste. Waters has gone on record claiming this to be his personal favourtie of all his films. Highly underrated and surpasses PINK FLAMINGOS both in candor and structure. originally slapped with an X rating. preceded by: THE RINGER. A long lost anti drug film produced by Pepsi for the strung out Pepsi generation (was it the drugs or the cola that induced these levels of toxicity?). Hired filmmaker Jeff Leiberman (BLUE SUNSHINE, 1978) was brought on board to make a film that "could speak to kids in a manner where educational films have traditionally failed." In the spirit of (The Baffler founder) Thomas Frank's Conquest of the Cool, this twenty minute film weaves a deftly intricate position on the culture industry. The film suggests the illicit/recreactional drug industry is no different than the corporate big wigs who package mainstream pop music: both, according to this logic, work to induce conformity through a sophisticated sign system that promotes a false sense of autonomy. Highly original in its approach and downright hilarious when considered in the context of educational/ephemeral films of its era, this gem has to be seen to be believed. While it may not get you off drugs it will certainly have you thinking about subversive style and its inevitable co-optation by mainstream culture. Chances are after seeing this film, you will toss out that nose ring you purchased at the mall last week. - Tue, 25 Jan 2005 10:59am | ||
