Cackaroche User Info... | Please note: Venue has been changed to New Brandiz (122 East Hastings)!!! PS: I can sorta understand Pub 340 not wanting to continue doing (loud) live music for fear of losing their liquor license & getting shut down permanently, but I gotta say: not bothering to personally call back the promoters is ULTRA LAAAAAME!!! - Mon, 27 Sep 2010 8:32am
Sati User Info... | Yeah, we got a couple of notes about that. But I hadn't heard from & then couldn't get ahold of the bar manager when I called - I think it was even the owner who answered her phone. I'm guessing what happened was that she resigned (like the profile said), out of frustration since I know those last weeks/days were a big pain in the ass dealing with the City. And she did what she was able to do under stressful circumstances. The lady at the City who handles noise complaints' name & contact info was also included, but I removed that - still not sure whether I should have. I know its tough but people have also behaved a whole lot worse when the shit's hit the fan re venue problems. I doubt most would even suggest that promoters contact owners (& provide contact info) re compensation for their expenses. Of course, I'd be upset too. It'd have been ideal if everyone had been called. This kind of thing always ends like a big mess. I'll edit in the new venue up top. - Mon, 27 Sep 2010 11:04am Edited: Mon, 27 Sep 2010 11:09am
Sati User Info... | I'm thinking I should qualify this. Most of us know that 340's been a mess ever since Pierre & Malice left. But nevertheless Pierre did an amazing job of setting up a great room for live music, and he & Malice went on to establish it further with killer lineups, Kato & Nick with great sound etc. So rather than lose the room completely we did what we could to support so that it could continue. I know people would rather we'd have taken sides and engaged in scene politics. Pierre/340 was really our first & biggest supporter along w/the Cobalt when we started out so athough I felt a little bad, I never find mudslinging or boycotts very productive and do our best never to get involved. Its more based in fear & anger, plus restriction is NEVER a good thing for artists or fans to contend with. I try to be respectful of the bad situations and hurt feelings all round, but we have a job to do. Right off the bat Pierre was professional enough to understand that and we've continued to be on good terms ever since. In truth the bar manager never should have been put in charge of handling bookings, and we all kept hoping they'd hire someone right for the job, but that never happened. So chalk it up to mismanagement by the owner. To be honest I'd been frustrated (& confused!) by them over and over as well these last couple years, and I'm sorry it all ended this way but I'm even more disappointed that we've lost a lot of people's favorite room. - Mon, 27 Sep 2010 12:40pm Edited: Mon, 27 Sep 2010 12:47pm
Cackaroche User Info... | "In truth the bar manager never should have been put in charge of handling bookings" ... here - you are 100% right ... she never should have been put in charge of bookings, or any kind of management role (as Malice & Pierre can most likely attest). She was consistantly rude, absent-minded & downright 'unprofessional' (to the minimal degree one would need to be to run a place of that size). Throw a dose of 'bat-shit crazy' in there too ... "And she did what she was able to do under stressful circumstances." ... THIS, I don't agree with. The show above was booked there after a complete fluke scanning of their profile on LiveVan stating they were ready to do shows again (Pub 340 has/had virtually ZERO prescence on the web - & this being 2010). This 'notice' could have barely been more than a month or two ago ... how many bookers/promoters/bands could have possibly come across that little blurb & started filling up their calendar - let alone ones that would have ever dealt with them in the first place?!? I bet not many, which makes it THAT much more lame that a simple phone call/email couldn't have been made rather than have a hissy fit & leave everyone hanging. I even had arranged for a new upstart beer company to sponsor the event by supplying band-beer (the bar simply had to carry/sell a meager amount that night) - she told me she was cool with the idea, then when the rep called, she gave him a hard time about it ... they wound up coming up w/ an agreement & he eventually dropped by with a generous amount of stock. Upon hearing word 'through the grapevine' about the debacle that had just happened, he dropped by the bar to pick up his donated stock this past weekend, and what do you know ... GONE! Par for the course w/ this shit-show ... Ah well, I just hope her reputation precedes her & no venue ever gives her the chance ... lest I (or anyone else) ever have to deal with her bullshit again. Good riddance ... - Wed, 29 Sep 2010 8:05am Edited: Wed, 29 Sep 2010 8:10am
Sati User Info... | First of all sorry for helping to derail a thread on what we all know is going to be one KILLER show. W/regard to the rest, fair enough. I can't say that I knew all the facts in all these situations, and I was probably negligent by refusing to pay more attention re the original blowout. I actually did get subjected to it from all sides but these things are hard to take sometimes. (At least for me) Bottom line is that what we're trying to do here is encourage people to go out and see live music, and if musicians & fans are forced to pay attention to which promoter & venue boycotts are in effect, it ruins what should just be relaxing... fun... inspiring times together at shows. I'm not faulting those who got burned - its pretty inexcusable when people who're supposed to be our "support" in these efforts make things ugly. If there's any stand we should be making its that thats not what "live music in Vancouver" is supposed to be about. :( I knew they had no web presence so I helped get word out about 340 on twitter & myspace, though we're still weak on facebook. So sorry, but we're looking for media marketing help too. I can't spend any MORE time online than I already do here. Let me know if you got your beer back yet Mike, if not I'll try & help get that sorted out. And if anyone sees this please try not to take it out on the remaining 340 staff! - Wed, 29 Sep 2010 5:10pm Edited: Wed, 29 Sep 2010 5:11pm
