NOISE NOT BOMBS User Info... | We are happy to announce the fifth year of the Victoria Anarchist Bookfair, located on unceded Songhees Territory in Victoria, British Columbia. The Bookfair is for anarchists and non-anarchists, with participants from all over North America and beyond. We seek to introduce anarchism to the public, to further elaborate upon current and historical anarchist ideals and to foster dialogue between various anarchist tendencies. Parti...cipants from different anarchist traditions, visions, and practices are welcome. Events include book and information tables, workshops, readings, films, presentations, and much more. A Festival of Anarchy will take place during the week before the Bookfair, beginning on September 3rd, 2010. We are proud to have received Monday Magazine's 'M Award' for Victoria's best literary event in 2009. It's our 5th Birthday and we're going to have a blast! ================================================== @ 680 Courtney St Sep 11 & 12 ================================================== Bookfair Workshops Written by Commissar of Propaganda Saturday, 07 July 2007 01:54 Saturday, September 11th Doors: 1:00 - 6:30 pm 1:00 pm Opening Acknowledgments 1:30 – 2:20 pm Systems of Oppression - Working in Solidarity with Indigenous Peoples and People of Colour Melina Laboucan Massimo and Ruby Smith Diaz What does it truly mean to be an ally to marginalized community? And why is it important to understand the history of the communities that you work in solidarity with? This workshop will be dedicated to uncovering the similar histories of oppression against Indigenous communities, and communities of Colour. Join our discussion of how these oppressions may continue to play out in radical communities today, and what you can do as an ally to prevent it. 2:30 – 3:20 pm Graphic Radicals Panel Discussion Seth Tobocman, Rebecca Midgal, Kevin Pyle and Gord Hill with Allan Antliff Artists from the World War 3 Illustrated collective and Indigenous graphic artist Gord Hill will discuss the dynamics of community activism and artistic production. The panel is being organized as part of the Graphic Radicals exhibit at the Legacy Gallery in downtown Victoria. What role can art play in galvanizing a community? How do aesthetics figure in the communication of an anti-authoritarian outlook? Are there lessons to be learned from past artistic practices? Should radicals pay more attention to art? This workshop will provide a forum for reflection and debate. 3:30 – 4:20 pm It Hurt so Good: How to make your own Flogger and explore Kink Anne Petitclerc This workshop will show you how to make a flogger out of bike inner tubes ("upcycled" and vegan, woah!). If that ain't exciting enough, we'll also talk about consent within the context of power exchange and sensation play. Please bring a few inner tubes and a pair of scissors if you can. 4:30 – 5:20 pm Poverty in Victoria: "Beautifying", "gentrifying" or "dehumanizing" Pandora Green? The City of Victoria is drawing up a plan to "beautify" the 900-block of Pandora Avenue, an area many members of the street community call home. Pandora is at the epicentre of a growing poverty crisis in Victoria, and homeless people are facing displacement to another part of the city once again. The Committee to End Homelessness, Harm Reduction Victoria, Society of Living Intravenous Drug Users and the Victoria Coalition Against Poverty talk about issues and collective action. 5:30- 6:20 pm Creating Space for Radical Sobriety Comrade Black Many people fighting to keep clean of addictions find it difficult to participate in milieus where intoxication is a norm. This workshop and discussion will explore the creation of sober safe spaces in radical communities and how to combat the marginalization of those who choose sobriety. We’ll take a critical look at intoxication culture and the positive alternatives a sober space might offer. =================================================== Sunday, September 12th Off-site Workshop 11:00 – 11:50 am Free Fuel: How to do a Veggie Oil Conversion Brett Vidler This workshop will provide hands-on advice on how to convert your vehicle to run on veggie oil. All that is involved in the process will be visually explained from start to finish, from getting the parts, doing the labour and collecting and filtering veg oil. Questions welcomed. The workshop will take place outside the bookfair venue, near 680 Courtney Street. Doors: 12:00 – 6:00 pm 12:00 – 12:50 pm Piracy, Egalitarianism and Radicalism Ruediger Haude, Aachen, Germany This workshop focuses on the contrast between organised life on ships run by commercial ventures and navies – symbolic spaces where the necessity of domination is propagated---and the culture of piracy. Pirates voluntarily agreed to radical forms of self-governance when "going on the account" to raid the sea lanes. We'll discuss where these rogues might have gotten their ideas of egalitarianism and governance from and how the protocols of piracy were symbolically secured. Drawing on the ideas of Peter Linebaugh, Marcus Rediker, Hakim Bey, and Stephen Snelders (as well as my own archival work), I’ll challenge the more sceptical perspective of Gabriel Kuhn (author of Life Under the Jolly Roger: Reflections on Golden Age Piracy) and open up some intra-anarchist controversy. 1:00 – 1:50 pm Conquered Bodies, Conquered Spirits: Freeing Yourself from Food and Weight Obsession Sam Pike and Ruby Smith Diaz What does it mean to really love your body? What does it mean to "take up" physical space? Join us for a discussion about what it means to love and nourish your-SELF, as a means of resistance to the establishment, through a fun and thought-provoking activity. Finally, we will close by addressing disordered eating and distorted body image within punk and anarchist communities, and a brainstorm on what we can ALL do to fight back! 2:00 – 2:50 pm No One Is Illegal, Vancouver Join members of No One Is Illegal Vancouver in a workshop and discussion on anti-colonial migrant justice. Learn about their current campaign against the Immigration Minister and their current work surrounding the arrival of the 490 Tamil refugees. For more information on NOII visit: noii-van.resist.ca 3:00 – 3:50 pm DIY Touring and Networking Blank Space & TESTAMENT Got something to say, or do, and want to share it? Are you a musician, poet, artist, circus freak, or speaker? Radically Touring (to us) is meeting your needs while you travel, in a DIY (Do It Yourself) manner, while keeping a sense of morals and ethics. In this workshop/discussion we will provide tools to help define ideas and create a step by step plan to make your 'seed goals' grow into healthy plans. Touring (traveling) through multiple locations can be accomplished safely and without alot of money/stress very easily (though radical to most people), and we are ready to tell you how we've done it. Though Networking and relationship building, your foundations as a touring artist/speaker can be easily solidified. Your job security becomes the relationships you build (as well as your art:) Whether you're playing music, on a speaking tour, facilitating workshops, selling merchandise, or a hardworking parent, you have to rely on your respective networks. Friends, and Friends of Friends are the web that we are encouraging you to connect with as we help you build a tool kit of travelling skills. 4:00 – 5:50 pm Lumpen Linguistics: Some Thoughts on Slang, the Dangerous Classes, and Global Civil War Roger Farr, Black Ink Anarchist Writer’s Collective This workshop/seminar takes as its starting point the writing of former Situationist Alice Becker-Ho, in particular her work around slang and argot: ie, that secret jargon used by criminals, outlaws, and other members of “the dangerous classes” to avoid detection and capture by the authorities. After putting Becker-Ho’s work into its historical context and highlighting some of its major points, the conversation will turn to a consideration of how this material intersects with recent anarchist and communist theory. The overall goal here is to open a discussion of how language, invisibility, and insurrection come together in contemporary anarchist struggles. 5:00 – 5:50 pm Forces of Destruction Zoe Blunt, Forest Action Network Capitalism is destroying the planet. We’re fighting back! Green Anarchy and the politics of environmental justice, civil disobedience, non-violence, and eco-sabotage. How the No Compromise Movement relates to mainstream environmentalism. Off-site Workshop 6:00 pm Herbal Medicine Plant I.D. Walk Janette Cormier, Sweet Gale Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine Learn about medicinal plants growing in Victoria with this workshop. Gather outside the venue doors at 6 to set off on a discovery of useful plants inhabiting the urban spaces around us. - Tue, 31 Aug 2010 4:24am | ||

The Festival of Anarchy starts on September 3rd and builds up the momentum for opening day of the Anarchist Bookfair. This year we are proud to host a wide variety of events featuring many talented artists, musicians, film-makers and activists. Check out the line up! Friday, September 3rd PANIC!: FREEDOM IN SOUND 2 Camas Books, 2590 Quadra Street Sound art, experimental music and performance, plus DIY art gallery arrive at 5 pm to hang your art 7 pm for PANIC! Freedom in Sound Saturday, September 4th WE HAVE NO LEADERS! Benefit show for Kelly Pflug-Back Mike XVX, Jeff Andrew, Star, Comrade Black, Chase, Sasha n Nedjo & more friends $5-$15 sliding scale, no one turned away! All money raised goes to Kelly's legal defence 7:30 pm, BCGEU, 2994 Douglas St (PLEASE NOTE NEW ADDRESS) Kelly Pflug-Back is a long time community organizer, whom has been targeted by the police and scape-goated as "the leader of the black bloc" from the G20. She is facing 13 charges including conspiracy, and mischief. The courts are viewing her charges as "hate crimes" against the police, meaning if she is convicted she will be given a stiffer sentence than normal. This is a blatant misuse of hate crime legislation originally intended to protect identifiable minorities from racist, homophobic or sexist violence. We believe Kelly is being targeted for her roll as a community organizer doing anti-racist and anti-poverty work in her community. Sunday, September 5th URBAN CAPTURE THE FLAG 8:00 pm in Bastion Square Capture the Flag is a team-based game popularized by the Boy Scouts of America as a way to prepare boys for conscription during the World Wars. Urban Capture the Flag (UCTF) is a 21st Century detournement of this practice, primarily organized by anarchists in North America as a way to build community, reclaim the streets and public space, develop insurrectionary and protest tactics for affinity groups, produce a counter-spectacle for passers-by and build group morale through risk-taking together. Monday, September 6th Anarchist ‘day of rest’ Tuesday, September 7th PRISONS AT THE FRONT LINE OF REVOLUTION A Victoria Anarchist Reading Circle event with Juliet Belmas 7:30 pm Camas Books, 2590 Quadra Street After a lengthy prison term for smashing the state, Juliet Belmas has gone on to produce several award-winning short films about women in prison. Her painterly cinematic style and experimental production values have been characterized ‘subtle, yet harrowing.’ This evening she will discuss the politics of incarceration, including recent round-ups at the G-20 summit in Toronto, and why prisons are a “front-line” in the anarchist struggle. Wednesday, September 8th FUCK YOU! 7:30 pm Camas Books, 2590 Quadra Street An introduction to kink and sex toys with Michelle Powell. Thursday, September 9th END:CIV SCREENING Franklin López--Director/Producer, subMedia 7:30 pm, Camas Books, 2590 Quadra Street END:CIV examines our culture’s addiction to systematic violence and environmental exploitation, and probes the resulting epidemic of poisoned landscapes and shell-shocked nations. Based in part on Endgame, the best-selling book by Derrick Jensen, END:CIV asks: "If your homeland was invaded by aliens who cut down the forests, poisoned the water and air, and contaminated the food supply, would you resist?" Taking the long view: endless economic growth has turned into a global economic crash. What will the next hundred years bring? Students of history know that all civilizations eventually come to an end. The ancient Mayans, the dynasties of China, and the mighty Roman Empire, as long-lived and powerful as they were, could not escape this inevitability. The same goes for the culture we call Western Civilization. The causes underlying the collapse of civilizations are usually traced to overuse of resources. As we write this, the world is reeling from economic chaos, peak oil, climate change, environmental degradation, and political turmoil. Every day the headlines re-hash stories of scandal and betrayal of the public trust. We don't have to make outraged demands for the end of the current global system -- it seems to be coming apart already. But acts of courage, compassion and altruism abound, even in the most damaged places. By documenting the resilience of the people hit hardest by war and repression, and the heroism of those coming forward to confront the crisis head-on, END:CIV illuminates a way out of this all-consuming madness and into a saner future. http://endciv.com http://submedia.tv Twitter http://twitter.com/stimulator Friday, September 10th HIP HOP / SPOKEN WORD NIGHT OF DISSENT Open Space Artist Run Centre: 510 Fort Street, 2nd Floor You won't wanna miss this show and you have no excuse to miss it cause it's by donation!!
