Brand X Media User Info... | Here'a the article that came out about it in Monday Magazine. --------------------------------------------------------- Death of the Partymobile By - Greg Pratt Seems like Rocktoria's always fighting off negative connotations. Just when it got over trying to live down the fabled Curse (uh, I was kidding about that, by the way), the Q's infamous series of compilation CDs is now having death wished upon it. But local alt-rock bands shouldn't get their panties in a bunch yet-the organizer of the second annual Death To Rocktoria concert insists it's all in good fun . . . kinda. "I don't have anything personally against it," explains Jesse Ladret. "I just find it an embarrassment. It's a vain attempt on the part of the station and a lot of the musicians to get this extra exposure-instead, they get capsized. It's like when the partymobile rolls into town. Everyone thinks, 'Oh, great, the partymobile's here, it's a party.' But it's not really a party, it's more of a pitch. So there's no real authenticity there, as far as creativity. I have a contempt for commercial radio in general, for that reason." Ladret, who also is the brains behind the cool brandxmedia website (www.brandxmedia.ca), says that attempts at success are fairly futile in such an isolated music community, so musicians should just relax and be themselves. "The best thing about Victoria is that nobody here plays music because they expect to get famous. That's where the inhibitions just disappear; musicians don't have to feel any pressure from any outside source. We're pretty hidden, so we might as well act like it. Nobody can see us, so do whatever the hell you want," he laughs. (In fact, joining Ladret in his Rocktoria roast this week are some of the city's most hidden groups, including David Chenery & The Lonesome Valley Singers, Smallhorse, Children of Celebrities, Keewye and Gashly Crumb.) Surprisingly, when I ask Ladret if he's had any run-ins with the Q, he said there's been no problems on that end-it was Rocktoria alumni themselves who took most offense last year. "The station manager contacted me, and he thought it was pretty funny. There was no conflict there. Which was good, because I didn't want to get sued. Blood from a stone, you know," he chuckles. When contacted about this year's event, the Q's senior programming manager, John Shields, says, "I don't have a problem with it. Rocktoria is going through a change anyway. It's going to be different from what it's been in the past." So will there be more Death To Rocktorias in the future? "I don't think so," admits Ladret. "No. A sequel's bad enough. There's gonna be a lot more shows, but none focused on the death of anything. Time to boost morale a bit." And no, there won't be compilation CDs commemorating Ladret's concerts. After all, the local pawn shops have enough Rocktorias in them to keep the discount bins stocked for years. "They're popular in Lyle's Place," deadpans Ladret. "If you go to the front of the store." - Wed, 28 Jul 2004 1:05pm | ||
