Call them the �Big Sugar Acoustic Duo� or �Two Fools On Stools��.Just don't call them Big Sugar unplugged. There are no Marshall amps on 10, no louder-than-thunder drums, or spleen altering bass tones. Yet Gordie Johnson (guitars and banjo) and Kelly Hoppe (harmonica and melodica) are definitely plugged in. They're plugged in to the fountainhead of their collective musical beginnings. At one of their shows the audience may hear songs about Long Gone Lonesome Blues (Hank Williams), The Girl on the Billboard ( Del Reeves) or how the spirit might Move On Up a Little Higher ( Mahalia Jackson). At another, songs about the exploits of a Rattlesnakin' Daddy and the Rock Island Line. Each show is different, uniquely affected by the intimate interaction between the audience and the performers, and by the ability of Johnson and Hoppe to dust off and then burnish the nuggets from their past. Included, of course, is material from the present and future catalogue of Big Sugar songs, but with a different approach, naturally, and with some revealing the nascent form of the "finished" product. Ever since their successful headline appearance at the prestigious Edmonton Folk Festival in 1999, Johnson and Hoppe have been performing in this configuration whenever their Big Sugar schedule allows. Those who have seen and heard them can attest to the joy of this singular musical experience. It should not be missed!
