It's strangely appropriate that Wax Mannequin announced himself as a sort of Pied Piper on his self-titled album. Since then, the Caledonia-bred solo performer (alias Chris Adeney) has seen crowds swell from an appreciative trickle to an everything-but-the-swaying-lighters deluge. Part enigma, part evangelist, his transformation from quirky prog-folk flake to art-punk phenom has surprised even himself. And yet his creativity is rootless; you sense that his eyes are always on the horizon, scouting new dimensions and exciting directions.
Wax Mannequin's skill as a songsmith and a performer are immediate, his vocal range and control startling. Anthemic, whimsical and faintly ominous, the songs balance absurdity and profundity, and can silence audiences like little else. Wax Mannequin's albums meld spidery finger-picked classical airs, sturdy rock riffs and cricketing electronic mites and motes with indelible melodies and lyrical dreamspeak that resonate in heart and head. They recall music that never was: the intersection of Another Green World-era Eno and Nursery Cryme-era Genesis, a lost collaboration between Nick Drake and Edward Gorey, or the ghost of Freddie Mercury channeled by Crispin Glover. Mannered, magic, and vaguely creepy.
Wax Mannequin not only goes through the looking glass, he shatters it, and the fragments form a kaleidoscope of evocative subconscious imagery and fanciful narratives. His meta-fables are strange and ecstatic, offering glimpses of the human psyche, the altered states of dreams and emotions. The landscape is as familiar as if you commuted through it every day - trains, fields, factories - but it's also spartan, starved of landmarks. The masses have become automatons, holographs, slaves to convenience. The world is diminished, but fantastic things persist. The cumulative effect of the songs is shifting and spectral, like following a trail of crumbs through a forest to find that it has unexpectedly turned into a constellation; the effect is unsettling yet comforting, a narcotic undertow of song.
Songcraft aside, Wax Mannequin is also a formidable entertainer. His sets, fluent in the language of performance art, soft rock, sweat and friendly entropy, regularly electrify crowds. In early 2000, Wax Mannequin introduced the "Jimmy" project, an ongoing mock-cult "social sculpture" and system by which audience members gain points for attending performances, participating in activities prepared by Wax Mannequin, and tricking others into joining the "system". As JimmyPoints are accumulated, audience members earn Super Powers that give them Amazing Abilities.

Wax Mannequin has opened for punk legends No Means No, Guelph's Royal City, seminal Canadian rockers The Rheostatics and Britain's Turner Prize-winning artist Martin Creed among others. In the summer of 2001 he completed a cross-Canada tour with Sonic Unyon's Mayor McCA and he is currently on extended tour in support of his acclaimed sophomore album, and Gun.

"Wax Mannequin strikes a balance between eerie classicism, stilted prog and Grimm weirdness. His voice may be a stand-out feature, but songs like 'Message From the Queen' and 'Things To Do With Rage' will ink him in your memory."

"Impressive...Very impressive."

(Dave Bidini, The Rheostatics)

"Wax Mannnequin waves hello and turns to water, ready to pull me off the shore with his tide. I could stand on a street corner with Wax Mannequin forever and all the world's shoulds and shouldn'ts would never arrive. Wax Mannequin refuses to slay dragons, me thinking other people's dragons never pass his way -- turns out he's got a colouring book in his saddle bag, he shows it 'round happily and we see he's been rolling 'round outside the lines, oh dear, and he's eaten all of the colours, a pile of ripped crayon
wrappers at his feet."

(Jean Smith, Mecca Normal)

I saw this guy under the tea room recently!
He gave me one of the super power cards
One of his songs was stuck in my head for like 3 days
I couldn't decide if he was insane or a genius... but he was FUCKING SEXY!
Steamers? that will be interesting. I wonder what the frat boys wil think - Sun, 8 Dec 2002 4:30am
Anonymous exactly what I was thinking. I think he is probably an insane genius. and it's always fun to watch the faces of the audience while he's playing. awestruck-about-to-burst-out-laughing kind of expression - Sun, 8 Dec 2002 1:03pm
lili Show at The Tea House
Wax Mannequin can hold an epic silence with confidence, gentility and power while his eye (#3) searches around the room for the other illuminated souls.
He- found -me and I am glad I had the chance to see him.
Although I enjoyed the other Magician who performed that night (The Great Giffoni) Mr. Waxs magick invaded my darkness, flirted with my subconscious and shared a dream with me that night.
The- only- way- out- is- in. (A.C)
