What a show. Minus The Proles, but that really didn't make a difference to me.

Bury Whats Dead- Good set, high energy, very interesting hybrid crust/core/whofuckingknowsanymore. Really dug the tri vocals.

Iskra- Unfortunately their set was cut short due to technical difficulties. The fucking PA was catching on fire. How many bands can say, our vocals are so intense that our amps ignite. The sound was 100 times better than when I last saw them. Drumming was that much better as well. Sad to see only a short set but still powerful as fuck.

Descention- What can I say? BRUTAL!!! One of the most brutal bands I have seen in Victoria in a long long time. A complete contradiction to the motif of the other bands, but a nice change of pace. Vicious war metal. Chunky when appropreate and blasting when necessary. Crazy head banging and fist pumping riffs. Goddamn, it's nice to see a band like this around here once in a while. Good fucking times.

Had a good time chatting it up with everyone at the show. Big turn out, surprisingly enough. If you missed out then you really missed out. - Sat, 6 Dec 2003 7:05pm

This was a rad show, I went because I hadn't seen Iskra yet and holy fuck! This band has 3 members from the now defunct 'Crepitus' and I was surprised at the totally different style they had. I wouldn't say they sound like Converge but that's the closest style I could compare them to, with a but of a punky-thrashish feel to it. A lot of people were comparing them to other black/death metal bands but I don't think they sound like that at all, I feel silly wring this because I really can't define this band, but that's a good thing, 'cause I guess it means they're somewhat original. Or at least I thought so, I fucking hate bands like 'Dillenger Escape Plan' and such, and I wouldn't say Iskra sound like that at all either, I guess my point is that they're one of the only 'discordant-core' bands I could really get into. 'Crust,' eh? Never heard that term before....
The first band was good, couldn't stand the last, boring and repetitive as fuck. But then again, I went to see Iskra and it was worth it so I'm glad I went. - Sun, 7 Dec 2003 3:53pm

It was a good show although it was cut short.

Too bad about the Proles, I remember seeing them awhile back and its interesting to see them at such an age spreading their message.

Bury Whats Dead put on a heavy set. Their drummer was solid and he did such a great job. He seemed to be the power behind the music for me.

Iskra had a killer, distinct sound. Kind of reminded me of the old days going to all ages show when crust/metalcore was more around. They've really progressed, and too bad it was cut short, or else I could say more!

Descention - thought it was kind of hypocritial that singer boasts " fuck politics and relgion and pc bullshit" and yet he's sporting an Amebix shirt.
I didn't care much for their music and really thought the drumming was awful. Nonetheless, it was good they were able to play since of the pa problems. - Sun, 7 Dec 2003 3:55pm

Descention were very disappointing. Far from tight (especially the drumming), generic riffs and borderline cheesy in spots. Whn you have options like Allfather why anyone would choose low grade flotsam like that is beyond me (a waste of a decent singer). Iskra kicked ass and were way more exciting than the first time I saw them. Lame about the PA though as I could have used more of their set. Bury What's Dead were OK though I'd like a little more of the Discharge aggression and far less sloppy poo breaks. - Sun, 7 Dec 2003 3:55pm

As far as I know the Proles haven't broken up, at least that was not the reason for their absence. I heard their singer got sick at the last moment and had to cancel. Too bad, they were a pleasant surprise the first time I saw them.

Bury what's Dead rocked as always, drummer Brad is a machine, and I was impressed by the new song they played, it gave a hint of a more extreme twist in their upcoming music it seemed.

When we started playing there was already that funny burning smell, it was very dissapointing having to quit after one speaker blew up and the other was literally smoking. This was not the first time we encountered technical problems during a show, but this time it was of a pretty serious nature. It sucked, I had the feeling we performed pretty well so far and we weren't even halfway through the set! We will for sure set this straight next time.

Desention, what can I say. I had expectations but was rather dissapointed. To me it sounded like they were trying to go after Blasphemy too much, and the constant staccato riffs were quite unoriginal and boring. The drumming was horrendous although I was surprised the guy didn't start slowing down during all the "hit everything as fast as I can simultaneously"-blasts. Many people were enjoying them though, and they delivered with alot of energy.

Allfather hasn't rehearsed for a number of months due to the absence of Justin, so I don't think they would deem the time right for a show already. - Sun, 7 Dec 2003 4:33pm

the whole goddamn show kicked ass. Bury Whats Dead was easily the highlight to me, fuckin tri-vocalist crust black grind mayhem! and since when did Iskra get a 2nd vocalist? Theyre cool meter rose like 500 points for that. And not to say that that it was low at all in the first place. - Sun, 7 Dec 2003 9:49pm

This show was great! a really diverse and interesting turnout. The bands complimented eachother well. throwing the Proles into the mix would have made it even more interesting. Its nice to see a mix of punks/metalheads/goths/crusties/freaks or whatever coming together and having a good time.

The "war metal" sort of lost me but it was still cool to see it. The singer, with all his tough guy posturing(quite humerous actually), seemed very confused as to where he stood. He seemed to be one of those high school "i'm anti-everything" guys. being that way is fine, to each their own-it just seems like a big negative trip to be putting on the young people who come to shows. I thought their music was pretty cool. very archaic(especially the shitty drumming). quite repetitive in nature but alright.

Everything else was fantastic, except for the obvious : short set by iskra., no proles etc. - Mon, 8 Dec 2003 12:04am

first off it was too bad the proles couldn't play.. somebody from the band got really ill right before they were going to come over... i hope all this talk of them breaking up is not true. second off it was too bad the pa that long and mcquade rented us fucking fried itself 3 songs into iskra's set.. i was really enjoying finally being able to hear drums and vocals really well. the double vocals were fucking great and jaspers drums miked were punishing. too bad but.. they ruled anyway. lastly and not least descention, despite the popular opinion on this thread, were pretty sweet i thought. amazing guitar player.. i agree with the last post, very archaic sounding. i loved their slow sludgy riffs.. and they were pretty cool about not having a proper pa for their set even though they had come all the way from van to play. their vocalist sounded excellent throught that bass amp. haha.. anyway.. great show, thanks to all the kids who showed up, freaked out and made it happen. - Mon, 8 Dec 2003 10:46am

sorry to inform you but We the proles are no longer, to the best of my knolledge, our drummer quite an our singer was sick of it, and getitng a new drummer and a new singer would not be the same band, It's true, our singer was incredibly sick, (something he ate), he had to sit at a friends house with their mom for two hours puking before going home, sorry for not coming, maybe we'll try at another show for old times sake sometime soon. I kenny, really liked bury whats dead set and iskras, but wasn't the biggest fan of descention, as someone else said they had generic riffs and cheesy bits as well... all in all it was an alright night.

Why is Bury Whats Dead so good? We'll have to secretly kill them I'm afraid. If we don't they'll take over the world.

ok..not sure what all the fuss is about here. first off i really enjoyed the show. however..googling over the pudgy one behind the drums for the first band will inflate his ego larger than his beer belly. repetative beats, repetative fills, and the totally lacking intensity & imagination "sloppy poo breaks" that someone else pointed out..rather boring if you ask me. how come all these new bands have lyrics you can't understand? remember the days when you could sing along? i do. but im old and pathetic i suppose. i can't beleive these jokers put on a show...with two huge speaker cabinets for each guitar player...and two bedroom sized p.a. speakers for the vocals and drums to go through. uh..ya..better luck next time dudes. iskra totally kept me rockin'in the free world. i've heard these boys look hot in drag.(especially the goateed one)unfortunate that the speakers started smoking more than me on a drinking binge, and they ended it with a really short set. (first band take notice...this is what REAL musicians sound like) next up was descention..who were the real highlight of the night..id heard these guys were "heavy"..and i heard right. i was totally digging the studded armbands and shoulder guards..drumming was wicked and ultra fast, and his metre was right on. wish they played longer...down with pc bullshit..up with war metal....Arrgghhh!!! - Mon, 8 Dec 2003 10:36pm

iskra!....i finally got to hear these guys and i was really blown away.its nice to see nick and devon in a band that will have some longevity as they are both amazing musicians.too bad about the pa problems tho.while i didnt catch all of descention(i had to hit the liquor store before it closed...haha),i've seen them before, theyre good at what they do,and decent guys to boot.bury whats dead seemed somewhat generic to me.but,in their defense, i really am not into that style of music so that may be why.all in all a good show despite the technical problems. - Tue, 9 Dec 2003 12:01pm

Wow....some scathing fucking reviews on this thread.
Bury What's Dead: Ok....well I will admit my bias. I've known members of the band for years and they are my best friends. That being said, I honestly don't agree with some of what was written about them. As far a generic goes, I can't think of too many (if even one) other band from this area playing their style (which is- for the most part -IMO dark melodic hardcore or modern american style crust). Mabey if you took into account ALL of bands doing a relatively similar style, you might be able to make a case for them being generic, but I doubt it.
I could totally understand if someone wasn't into their music, but as far as weird personal attacks directed towards individual members of the band- I find that to be completely unwarranted.
All that being written, this show definately wasn't the best they've played. Brad was kinda sick, and they did get pretty sloppy during certain parts, but I still really enjoyed their set (but I always do). I think that the new song is probably the best one they've written yet, but I liked the way that they used to play it where the blasting part was way longer.
Iskra: Well, this was my first real show in the band and I thought that it sounded alright until the mishaps. I'm not sure why someone would think that BWD's vocals sucked because you couldn't understand them, and still seem to like us (well mabey you just liked music and the vocals were inconsequential). Bizarre.
Descention: I originally thought that I was one of the few people who actually enjoyed their set but opinion seems to have evened out a little bit now. They weren't they most technical band I've ever seen but I wasn't expecting them to be. They had a really primitive sound that I thought was fucking awesome. I definately wasn't bored by them.
I'm not sure that I would call them war metal though. - Tue, 9 Dec 2003 5:15pm

I have heard that Iskra are one of the only bands of their style that are worth seeing. I will check em out for sure next show. Maybe they should play with The Enchanted Faeries and Seasons Of Sorrow and Chokehold. Chokehold, fitting name for Aaron Clark's new band. - Tue, 9 Dec 2003 6:14pm

Tell me they're not friggin serious. Follow the advice in your name, and pack it in already. Now thats music you CAN'T rollerblade too! I heard there was a minor skirmish in the crowd, which is always sweet if you're into Pantera as much as i am. - Fri, 12 Dec 2003 5:27pm

I made the video...sorry I couldn't keep it up. I just don't have the $$$ to pay for the bandwidth.

Wolf from Iskra has a copy of the tape, and if you're really desperate, or can't track him down...you can get a copy by going down to Vi and giving them $50.

I'd make copies, but I don't have the tapes anymore. They weren't my tapes.

What did the Pharcyde use to say?

"Everytime I step to the microphone, I put my soul onto 2 inch reels that I don't even own"

I feel like that everytime I shoot something for them. - Mon, 16 Feb 2004 12:28am
